This year FUCKING SUCKED. I snuck out of the house to get to A&G Ohio for 12 hours, only to end my night with the GOD DAMN PROTOMEN (a fire, they should die in one).

After turning 18 in May I declared freedom and went to ColossalCon with 3 of my friends.

    FFFFFF.

THAT'S IT. THAT'S ALL I'VE DONE THIS YEAR.

I haven't even been in the convention circuit for the past 2 years. When I was 14 and 15 BAM, every con within 4 states of Ohio. Now? Damnit. Starting in '09 I'm throwing myself back into the fire. Ohayo, Tekko, Colossal, Field, and ACen at the very least.
I'm hoping to get to those AND to Tsubasa, Youma, and Matsuri. I miss having cosplay friends outside people I've known since I was 5. I miss everything about being active in my area.
    >> Anonymous 01/03/09(Sat)02:41 No.1520725
Is Colossal still shit like it was the first few years it started?

I was 13/14 when I went to Colossal last (second or third colossal). It was kind of a lulzy hallway con filled with yaoi fans. I remember it being maybe four convention center rooms in a hotel and it pulled around 500 people tops the second year I went.

Youma was the only con I went to this year. First con in several years (since ACen 05) and wow it was different. Wasn't a bad con, per se, it was just a bunch of little kids with HUG ME signs and some slut dressed as Nurse Joker with tits asking for FREE KISSIES.

GOOD TIMES: AX, Fanime, Anime Oasis
    OK TIMES: KumoriCon, Tomodachi fest
ARGH WHAT THE HELL?! times: KumoriCon, Tomodachi Fest

I hate some of the people I know (smelly weeaboo aggravating people with no common decency) , but without the good ones (great friends who encourage me to get out of my house once in a while and have fun), some of those cons (kumoricon, tomodachi fest) would have been utter hell.

last years regrets? ripping the top of my Slowbro costume, I felt so bad because my partner REALLY wanted to do it for a con but I just didn't have the time to fix it.

Great times, First year since I was about ten years old to pull camera agro. never felt so good about myself.

new years goal, make something that is beyond my current ability level, improve my skills a little bit!
first task, making a long fully lined coat that is well tailored and fits me JUST RIGHT!

and now that I have mentioned it, what does /cgl/ think a good fabric for Grell's coat (from Kuro Shitsuji) would be? I am at a loss...

The 'main attraction' of the damn thing was ZOMG VIC!!!!<3<3<3 Which should be saying enough.

The schedules were completely wrong and I have the distinct feeling that none of the panels were pre-screened. I went to one on webcomics that ended up being two girls with a broken internet connection sitting and staring at the three of us who actually wandered in.

I guess next year they're having it at a water park or some shit like that.

Anime Boston was pretty fun, I think I saw more nice costumes at that con more than any other, even though 80% of them were seen in the Line-con (me and my gang were on line for 6 hours). NYCC rocked, it was a nice change from anime cons, and close enough to take the train to for the day, Anime Next was 'meh' but that was mostly due to my companions fighting with each other all weekend, and having to listen to one of them whine about the other all weekend. Otakon was fun, I was with awesome people all weekend, and me and my friend made a buttload of cash in AA. Manga Next was again awesome, because my whole family was with me, and we won best of weekend.

AmeCon was good this year. Better than 2007 though the experience was ruined a bit for me by personal blarghensplarghen why must people assume so much and talk bullshit about their assumptions as if it's known fact? Bleh. Oh yeah and the shit with the it's-not-a-masquerade-we-swear-but-here's-some-skits-and-costumes-anyway thing not kicking off right and the staff getting up in a bitch about that sucked. Oh shit and those retarded fire death trap bars they put up blocking a critical exit of the main bar just because the bastard doormen couldn't be bothered to cover two doors. And both bars running out of cranberry juice. Okay so actually it wasn't all that great. At least I finally got around to cosplaying something though.

Minami was pretty awesome as per usual. Going to have to Losercon it this year (as will about half of all people attending it seems) but that's okay since who goes to Minami for the convention anyway? So I suppose really that wasn't so special either. At least I got in some reporter-like live flashgun practise though.

Okay so really 2008 was a bit of an average/slightly shit year for cons.

A-kon blew some major ass even for A-kon I think. I don't understand why people really even go nowadays unless it's

    1. To get drunk, because nobody gives a fuck regardless of where you're working.
    2. Some random photoshoot you don't even need a badge for.
    3. You don't have good standards for cons and think it's still okay.

It wasn't that long ago that Expo wasn't so dangerously overcrowded that you *could* meet and hang out with friends at it. Now you spend most of your day in the queue and the rest of your day shuffling about inside the hall, desperately trying to find some free floor space so you can look at lots of stalls full of overpriced tat you have no intention of buying (or wandering aimlessly up and down the corridor outside trying to find somewhere to sit down). They barely even have any guests anymore.

Hell, Collectormania is less nightmarish and it's held in a bloody shopping centre (I know it's moving, but that has less to do with needing more space and more to do with the shopping centre freaking out about health and safety insurance).

Anyway, Minamicon was the con of the year for me. There was something a bit... off about Amecon that I can't quite put my finger on. Cosplay Ball was nice but ruined somewhat by twattish behaviour on the part of certain other attendees.

    Twenty-something long-time Atlanta congoer here.
AWA has never really been all that entertaining IMO; dull panels, lukewarm cosplay, and a lot of underage fuckery and security guard wankery. Saturday is usually the only day worth going for.
Momocon is OK if you go with low expectations; it is a FREE con run by a college anime club on a low budget, after all. Momocon is fun if you plan to socialize and people-watch.
Dragon*Con is the best and was the best ATL con of 2008. Less underage shenannigans, more mature crowd, WAAAY more to do and see, awesome room parties and live shows, and, for the most part, good costuming. To the Anon who was all "Ew, gross, fat cosplayers at D*C!": don't waste your fuckin' money, then. If you SERIOUSLY could not find ANYTHING to do at D*C except get all worked up over the minute percentage of fatties that crawled out after dark, then I'm feeling pretty sad for you. Oh, and they must be good if they had a whopping 20 people there shaking their fists in the air to the music.

Oni-con. I bought a 3 day pass. It was the first time I couldn't stand to go all 3 days. Most boring/disorganized con ever. I remember the first Oni-Con in that hot, cramped hotel and how much fun it was.

Anime Boston: Linecon. I've never had to wait more than three hours in line for a con and then this crap. In all honestly, I got off light, only 5 or 6 hours (I stopped keeping track, really), but my friends who didn't prereg missed my Friday night event because they were in line for upwards of 10 hours. Also, my (now) ex-boyfriend spent the weekend fucking his ex-girlfriend on MY hotel bed.

Connecticon: Pretty decent. I met some really nice people, had a lot of fun, really, and over all enjoyed myself... but I KNOW I didn't go into any panels. It was all walking around, hotel room, masquerade, dealers room for me.

Otakon: Kill me. Just... ffffffff. Besides the masquerade, fucking fail.

AAC: Great little con with a lot of nice people, no shitty guests, but some annoying ass attendees (Ginger Anne's a regular). Overall nice.

I personally loved the fact that it was tiny (which is why I think it kind of flew under the radar. That and the 21+ factor automatically prevented 98% of /cgl/'s population from attending.)

Academic panels. No stench. No crowds. No glomping. No screaming. Guests being able to mingle with attendees. A video track that showed obscure and rare titles (ie: "a video track worth seeing." Penguin Memories. 'nuff said.)

Biggest downfall? Venue was TOO big for a con that was planned to be small.

She went on and on about how she was raised by a cult and that's why her parents hated her. She kept staring at him trying to look serious and saying he didn't love her if he didn't believe her blah blah while he got more and more irritated.

Then she said "lol I was lying" and got super bitchy that he had accused her of lying. She said that it hurt her when he said he couldn't trust her if she made up stupid lies all the time. It hurt her deep in her heart. How dare he challenge what she says to him!

Ohayocon = It was decent. It could of been better. Masquerade was probably the most I had.

Anime Central = I had drama there, but it turned out great in the end winning the Judges Choice for skit in the masquerade. Con wise, the badge line taking 8 hours. I'm glad I didn't take part in that. Though, it was funny seeing people playing beach ball in the line.

Anime Expo: I like the new location even though it sucked taking shuttles, but it was probably the best choice. I got to see Shokotan and watched AX Idol and Masquerade. My only complaint is the props going into the Nokia theatre. They should of placed a checkin closer rather than going across the con to do it.

Otakon: Worst Masquerade experience coming from a big con. There were probably a few good skits but the rest was way to boring. I almost fell asleep during the halftime.

Youmacon: Probably my best con experience next to Anime Expo. Organized, alot of fun, new hotel was epic.

Anime Evolution was a let down this year, all except for one thing; putting the Artists Alley in the MIDDLE of the convention. You couldn't get anywhere without walking right through it. I wasn't all that well prepared, and I'm no amazing artist, and I made $600 in the three days I was there (well, two and a half). It was sweet.

It all came down to planning, though; because nothing was planned, and what was planned was shitty. The dealers room was shitty. The venue, while it was better than no con at all, was shitty. The events weren't so great, either. All of it was just shitty. And hopefully, since they're apparently getting much bigger this coming year, they'll have their shit together for this one.

Fingers crossed, though. Hosting an event, this year, and cheering that the walk off isn't on anymore.

First AB-I got my badge on Thursday evening real early so I didn't have to fight the huge lines (which I saw were just horrible), and the Pillow's concert rocked hard.

2nd was Portcon. They had it at a new place this year, but it was still alot of fun. Its a small con, and 95% of /cgl/ doesn't know about, but its right here in my hometown so ALL my friends can afford to go and have a good time. Rave was awesome, it was the first con rave I've been to where they actually had all the lights off, none of this "dim light" bullshit I usually seem to find.

The Annual Best of Nigerian Expo, which was small, had people dressed mainly in business suits and which has been on at the same time as the MCM Expo before. The Global Peace and Unity event organized by the Islam Channel which took up most of the hall space at Excel and the MCM London Expo.

They are certainly all a bit of a gamble. It really comes down to how many other people there you know. If you're not in the bars sharing bollocks with other people then there's not much point going to any of them. Minami is fine but entirely about the social aspect, even cosplaying is something of an afterthought and you can forget about any 'events'. Ame has some decent nights but pretty much up until 9pm you've got nothing. I can't comment on Aya since the last time that ran was a few years ago and I wasn't going to cons then, and though I'm definitely going to go this year now it's back up, who knows whether it will actually be good or not after such a long absence.
And Expo's something you go to once just to say you did then never bother with again because seriously, what's the point? You can do everything there worth doing in twenty minutes and it's not even good to just meet up with people since there's fuck-all seating in the ExCel centre itself and the two bars closest charge £6+ for one pint.

There are plenty of events at Ame/Aya (I know since my friends run most of them) just you (and the Baka's) don't bother going to half of them. 'sides there's stuff like the games room and stuff that are always on and good to have fun in. Still there could be ten times as many events and people would still probably opt for the bar anyway. Minamicon has less events since it officially ends Sunday afternoon due to it being a tiny con, though the Omake/Masquerade is always very good and again it's great for Karaoke/Games room. I wouldn't say either were a gamble for having a good time at. A few of the others (auchinawa etc) I've heard good things about too.

London Expo is only really good for another excuse to cosplay (for me an excuse to cosplay non anime things) and a chance to meet people. The masquerade /can/ be good but there's usually some awful KH Yaoi/Caramel Dansen thrown in there as well. So honestly I wouldn't bother going if I lived up the other end of the country/didn't have so many friends going I liked to meet up with.

I'm well aware there are events going on throughout the day at each con. Doesn't change anything. Thanks to the wonderful combination of import sites or the good ol' internet, there isn't going to be anything shown at a con that you couldn't have already watched six months previously; the quality of panels relies entirely on the quality of guests, and let's face it, our cons get at best one decent voice actor and that's of limited appeal. Dealer's room is much the same as showings, you can get it all earlier yourself elsewhere for much less. The things like Japanese food tasting or calligraphy are fine the first time you go but who's going to go for a repeat?
Ultimately you only have to look at the queues; the masquerades/omake get packed out, the Ame nights get full, and that's it. For every other event, even the games room, you'll find more people sitting in the bars than the event rooms.

I'm not saying con organisers should stop bothering or that everyone should just stay locked in their basements; but let's face it, all our cons would suck royally if you were by yourself and if you're expecting a weekend of non-stop Japanese-themed frolics then you're in for a bit of a disappointment.

P.S. you can cosplay non-anime characters at regular cons. If you took out the narutards I'd put hard money on most cosplay at Ame being non-anime.

Anime Evolution was pretty fail, especially after my friend who dragged me hyped it up so much. There was the whole venue change thing which everyone blames for the shitiness but still, the whole thing just reeked of bad planning, none of the events were interesting at all. Next year is supposedly going to be bigger and better but no walkoff and downtown hotel prices are going to have me saying otherwise until I see it for myself.

I don't remember mentioning showings at all, still there are plenty of other events and rooms other than the Omake/Masquerade that are worth going to, dependant on whether you're interested in them and can be bothered to go to them. The karaoke has also been far more packed than the bar a lot of the time, the ball has always been popular as are the parties.

If you were particularly interested in more aspects then you would find more to do, obviously. If you wanted to be going to an event/room for every hour the con was going you could do that, but uh no one ever wants to do that. Most people /want/ to chill at the bar. I certainly don't think there's a lack of anything in most cases (I'd like Minami to run later into the evening.. but that's unlikely). Anyway I know of a few cool things in the work for Aya so I'm looking forward to it.

And I am aware I can wear what I want to anywhere, you dolt, but non anime things are better recieved at Expo and /someone/ has to uphold the comic/film/Sci-fi side of Expo since that's what it used to be till animu invaded.

wat. p-chan is a pretty cool guy. eh organises cons and doesn't afraid of anything.

Most staffers not only ignore the attendees' suggestions and complaints, but they often lash out in response. And they consistently get worse and worse about this each year. A-kon 2000 vs A-kon 2008 is like night and day.

A big chunk of security is made up of power-hungry teenage assholes who treat you like dirt.

Big con with the money for awesome guests but typically your JP guests will be insignificant or musical guests while we have the same legion of ridiculous NA voice actors yet again.

A big room full of so many Texas cosplayers is going to equal fail. The majority of congoers these days are underage dumbfucks.

Shit rarely starts on time, especially masquerade. Masquerade judges are often lawl-worthy.

Nothing fun to do at all.

Anime Oasis - usually good, was horrible to where I'll never return. Con-chairman slit his own throat on that one and compared every big con to Hell.

Nan Desu Kan - Meh, but became better. Happy to see it continually improve. Wish it was held in a ifferent hotel without a broken set of elevators every 5 seconds.

    you go for PARTY HARD
    >>1525782
    this is true...
i normally volunteer for AX, and have done so for the last 5 years, but seeing that the vol staff decided to be bitches and banned me on mistaken identity, i'm not sure it's worth the trouble to get that ban lifted, seeing as to most of what i did there is party hard after the main events are over and hang in the video game room for half of con other wise...

so this year's AX sucked for me, but anime la wasn't so bad; aside from personal drama in our group, it was pretty chill... lot of underage cancer-tards running free though...

Anime Oasis - Jeremy needs to be SHOT before we return to that con. And they need a better venue (if that's possible in Boise). Good for a first con, for narutards, retards in general, and locals. Otherwise try to avoid this one unless you have money burning through your pocket.

NanDesuKan - Agreed, getting better and better. Their staffing and judges need to bump up a few levels, but otherwise a solid medium-sized con. I was surprised to see even CA people going there this last year.

Kumoricon- STAFF. THEY NEED IT. Or at least better security. Anime Hunters always put on some of the best opening/closing ceremonies I've seen, but a con needs to be more than just them.

Anime Evolution - New venue and hotels sucked balls, as well as the management, but I'm withholding any discrimination for this year's since they somehow landed the con center in downtown Vancouver. Could be less disastrous maybe..?

Geezus christ. I wouldn't have guessed, really. I assumed the library had been a collection of different people's, or belonged to the con itself. (Idk.) Surprising someone owned them all...Makes my own collection look shitty.

I'm sure animewasabi is going to continue to fail as well.
    >> Anonymous 01/09/09(Fri)01:32 No.1536353
    I went to...

Anime Wasabi - tiny first-year con in Colorado (where we're all itching for another con). Was suprisingly fun and laid-back, I was expecting a big mess. I was glad to see the staffers taking all suggestions to heart. I heard some nasty rumors about some of the con founders though, I hope we get a second year?

Fanime - I really enjoyed this, my first CA con. The venue was nice. It had a lot of impressive and friendly cosplayers, and the dealer's room was delicious. I missed the masq., though, but I hear I'm better off.

AX - this is the only con where I'm actually interested in any of the panels. I especially liked how efficient the badge-pickup was. I just wish it wasn't so HOT, and that there were more (and better) foodplaces in the vicinity. LA sun + costumes + walking distance = nightmare.

Nan Desu Kan - my hometown con. Staff seemed uptight this year, and some were especially rude regarding the hall cosplay rules. It's nice to see the NDK attendance go up, but with that we have crowd issues and lots of obnoxious kids. I hope the con can afford to move into a bigger hotel soon.

    VERY true.

ANext: Usually I have a good time. This year was pretty shitty. I'm glad they're moving it elsewhere. Hopefully it's bigger so they can be more organized.

NYAF: For a newer con, only having finished its second year, I like it a lot. It's not #1, but I always have a good time. I have complaints, of course, but I think the pros weigh out the cons. For me, at least.

Sitacon: For a very small college con, it wasn't that bad. I actually had more fun here than ANext-- which is the con I usually have the most fun at. The people were very personable. The cosplay was all around shitty, but that was okay. They were very nice, at the very least.
