    Dear /cgl/,

How come there never seem to be any American cosplay-related photos that turn out as flattering as Japanese equivalents? Whenever American cosplayers try to use photoshop they either end up looking really bad or like some kind of over-edited bleached out myspace picture.

Are there any actual pics of caucasians that have been touched up WELL? This pic is the only one I could find, and low and behold it's Japanese porn.

Japan uses better cameras and they've learned the basics of photoshop. Not the Chinese though. God.

Pretty much this. Go to Comiket one year, photographers are fucking EQUIPPED there, and they have enough common sense to actually filter through their photos and make decent touch-ups, so you don't see a lot of awful photos.

Though IMO, western cosplayers have produced a lot of incredibly awesome pictures, whereas though Japanese photos are nice, it's usually simple head/bodyshots. Go to Cure, I guarantee you you'll find five photos that all have the same pose, face, touch ups, and composition in a matter of seconds.

    Yes. THIS.
I am a fairly known cosplayer and I shop ALL pics the internet has ever seen of me. No one has called me on it yet. Cause you don't go nuts with it. You just adjust levels, fix a pimple, adjust curves, use burn and dodge appropriately, and conservative use of reduce noise.

Eh, I shop like crazy and no one's called me on it either, but I'm not well known anywhere. They don't care, and that makes me feel easier. A lot of the shit comes from vendetta fags or just hatin' on asian shoops.

    Agreed.
OP, if by "flattering" you mean bleached out, dodge-loaded, blinding nuclear dropsites for photos with no discernible shadows or facial features, then yes, the Japanese shop themselves really well.

All magazine cover models are shopped, and it's obvious, and they're professionally done. People don't want to see blemishes or ugly shadows. Anime characters are bright and saturated, so of course it's better to get some of that quality when imitating cartoons.

Not shooped, but still cosplay-relevant and American:

    3rding this.

Though I don't entirely disapprove of what the japanese do. It sort of makes them look part live action part animated.

    2 main reasons.

    1. With rare exception, westerners don't know how to pose and they don't know how to follow the direction of the photographers. And they don't smile because they think it makes them look tough or sophisticated, when they actually just look dumb or stoned.

    2. The photographers think that they can just pick up their cameras and start taking pictures. No practice, no technique, no experience. They think the shit is supposed to magically come to them.

    >And they don't smile because they think it makes them look tough or sophisticated...

Not always the case. In my case, I personally try not to smile if I can help it because I have a particularly unflattering smile, especially if I show teeth. I usually avoid this being an issue by cosplaying serious characters, but still. I'm not doing it because I think it'll look OMG SO BADAZZ, I'm doing it because I know I'll look vastly better in photos if I don't smile.

Doesn't have much to do with Photoshoppan, though.
