73 KB Anime cosplay at non-anime cons. Anonymous 12/25/08(Thu)17:18 No.1499122
I'm curious about this issue, so I thought I'd ask.

We've had threads in the past about non-anime cosplay at anime conventions, and aside from a few, most people said that they don't mind or even enjoy it.

What about the opposite? Anime cosplay at comic/sci-fi/general/non-anime conventions. What's your opinion on it?

I ask because I'm checking out SDCC for the first time, and when I looked at the section on Cosplay.Com, it seems to be mostly anime gatherings. Though that could just be because it's Cosplay.Com. I'm not sure why it surprised me, but it did.

Anime today is highly infectious and there are always hordes of weeaboos and dorks that insist on cosplaying as their favorite naruto/bleach/kingdom hearts character thinking that every con they go to is exactly the same as their local anime con. Years ago it was kind of fun to see anime stuff at non-anime cons. Now it's just overt and obnoxious.

It's kind of sad when you go to Comic Con or Wizard World and hardly see a single comic book-based costume in a sea of generic weeaboo garbage. There's nothing wrong with anime, but it shouldn't permeate every single facet of your life. Enough is enough.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/08(Thu)17:32 No.1499134
People seem to forget that anime does have a presence at events like comic con with anime screening rooms, company panels like Viz and bandai do, and a large chunk of the exhibition hall having anime dealers. So it doesn't surprise me that anime cosplay tends to be well recepted there. Unlike at anime cons where, to me, it seems most people only take pics of cosplay form series they know, at comic con I've notice just about anything goes for photographers as long as it looks interesting.

But as for cosplay.com, it's full of mostly anime/video game cosplayers so it's not surprising that most of the gathering threads posted there are anime. But I wouldn't say that represents the majority of comic con cosplay. (honestly I think I see more video game related costumes than anything else there.)

Comic Con is opening up more to anime fandom as years go by. Last Comic Con had Kubo Tite and Hiro Mashima, which indicates that Comic Con wants more anime fans in their mix of attendees.

It's okay to cosplay as anime character. Hell, often we see non-anime cosplays at anime conventions. So it's okay.

As a San Diego native, I can tell you that Comic Con sucks balls.

The thing has just gotten completely out of control in the last few years. It isn't fun anymore.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/08(Thu)17:39 No.1499146
The only problem I have with anime cosplayers at non-anime events is that they tend to be obnoxious underage weeaboos. I don't mind seeing sane anime cosplayers, but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when the only non-/co/splay that I see is underage idiots in crappy Naruto or Kingdom Hearts outfits running around screaming.

It's called dignity and manners. Learn them.

Having a couple manga dealers in the exhibit hall and a screening room shoved in the back closet doesn't exactly mandate that 99% of costumes at a COMIC BOOK CONVENTION should be anime crap. That's just because of cosplayers who insist on invading cons with their generic weeaboo bullshit.

Call me old fashioned, but when I go to a comic con I am more interested in seeing the various interesting comic/movie/sci fi costumes people come up with that are relevant to the con than just seeing more stupid naruto, sailor moon and bleach junk.

    This.

At first I thought it would be hypocritical to dislike anime cosplay at non-anime cons, since I love seeing non-anime cosplay at anime cons.

But thinking about it more -- there are a million anime cons, and they're everywhere. There's not very many non-anime cons, like SDCC and Dragon*Con, etcetc, and they're usually more distant and a lot more expensive than anime cons. With that in mind, it just seems like an awful waste to go through all that and wear anime cosplay at a non-anime con, when there are so many other venues for it.

To be truthful, it doesn't bother me just for the fact that it's anime. It only bothers me because it's always hordes of Naruto, Bleach, Final Fantasy, etc.

I'd just rather not see anime at non-anime cons. Like someone else said, there are tons of local anime cons all over, but not that many comic/scifi/whatever else cons. It's fine if someone has a -good- anime costume they bring, but all of the generic shitty naruto/bleach/kingdom hearts people can stay the fuck away.

As a SDCC attendee, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Comic-Con is for almost all things fandom, anime, video games, comics, movies, and television included. So I wouldn't go as far as to say that Comic-Con is a non-anime con, because it isn't. People who say it is are splitting hairs.

that would be like going to a party that you were not invited to

The problem is that SDCC is such a big tent, the fire marshall is rattling his fist just outside.
    >> Anonymous 12/26/08(Fri)01:01 No.1499699
It's such a big tent that it just seems retarded for it to exclude anime cosplay. You've got so much geeky shit, movies, tv, games, comics, cartoons, etc, that excluding anime would be making it pretty much "ANYTHING BUT ANIME" which is pretty stupid, especially considering that it's a growing part of the comic-cons.

The only real problem with anime cosplay at SDCC or NYCC would be the same as it with anime-cons, repetitive and mediocre bullshit like Naruto, Bleach, and shitty Death Note closet cosplays.
    >> Anonymous 12/26/08(Fri)03:25 No.1500078
And you think all those Dark-knight version Joker cosplays had a place in Anime cons? Double standard much?

Anime cosplay at non anime cons is looked down upon, strongly. coscom is 95% anime and video game related, so their forums will reflect that. I strongly advise you do not do anime at a non anime con
    >> Anonymous 12/26/08(Fri)03:52 No.1500123
The idea of a non-anime con is pretty retarded. Like, anything geeky just no anime? Having such a big nerd tent, then denying just one thing because of what country it comes from is just stupid.

The people who would look down on it are neckbeards and Comic Book Guys.
    >> Anonymous 12/26/08(Fri)03:53 No.1500127
If you cosplay at Comic Con as an anime character no one will care.

Wow, how old are you, 13? Anime is only a small % of all the various geekdoms out there.
