    Alright /cgl/.

What is your pet peeve about cosplay? Something that will never change; something that may even make you seem like the shallow bastard, but hey, everyone has different opinions. Fatties? Shitty costumes? Bad photography? Wig care? Let it all out.

Pic related. Three of my pet peeves in one picture: gender swap, "raver" costume, and lack of a wig.

Agreed. They should barely come past your ass, but people think that it's like a real school uniform so they can just wear it halfway to their knees.

Not so much a pet peeve, but it's disappointing when I see a beautiful costume on a decent body with a good wig, but the face is fug so it messes everything up. Especially when they didn't even try to put on makeup.

Poor wig care. Dear god, I have to handle the wigs for my group...And only one of them bothered to leave it in my possession. One of the wigs is going bald because the dimwit who owns it won't store it correctly. And the bitches at me. You know what? It was a cheap wig, it practically eats my hair pins, and it's going bald. GET A NEW WIG, YOU TWIT. And LEARN TO STORE IT PROPERLY. AURG.
She's done this with all 3 long wigs she owns too. One of them is clear down to her butt, and she still just shoves it in an ever loving DRAWER.

tl;dr: I hate having to deal with wigs of people who don't know what the hell they're doing.

    >>1490397
How should one store a wig? I usually just keep mine on wig heads (since they have a lot of styling or accessories attached to them). Is there something else I should be doing, or should I just not shove them in a drawer? I'm a little worried now.
    >> Anonymous 12/21/08(Sun)02:19 No.1490405
    >>1490402
It's usually best to either stick 'em on a head (baggie the long hair if it's longer), or just baggie it in general. She just throws them in a drawer...No head, no bag, no nothing. They get tangled to hell and back, and it hurts my brain sitting around with a comb and wig conditioner, trying to fix her idiocy.

    >>1490402
I'm not sure about styled ones, but you should probably wash them and take the accessories off if you don't plan to use them for a long time. The hair products could collect dust and stuff. You could at least keep them in large boxes to keep the styling intact.

Wigs are best kept in the net things (to keep them from tangling) and the ziplock bags they're usually packed in, then stored in a cool place away from sunlight. It's better not to just prop curly/wavy wigs on wig heads because they tend to droop after a while.

I once talked to a cosplayer who claimed he made his costume because he just loved his character and not because he cared if he won something from it. "Cosplaying is for the fun of it," he said. Then later complained when someone bet him out when their costume had this detail and that detail missing. If its not about the contest, then don't complain about not winning and then changing your mind that "COSPLAY IS SERIOUS BUSINESS." Just be honest.

    - Naruto cosplayers that make the rest of us look bad. Some of us actually DO TRY to make good looking Naruto cosplay... and then there's the rest that make the few good ones wince in horror and hide.
    - Cheaply made props (like ones that LOOK like duct tape and cardboard)
    - Cheap wigs or wigs styled really badly or BOTH
    - Genderswitch cosplays. Fuck I hate those.
    - Fat people that seriously should not be doing that costume because my eyes bleed. Not fat people who are doing a cosplay that they don't look just-like the character because they have a fat face or somthing but... those ones with bulge hanging out everywhere and you can see every wrinkle of fat through their spandex. Shudder.
    - On the other hand, anorexic people that I could have lived without seeing every one of your ribs in that costume for a character that obviously has muscle and a good build.. instead of your bony ass.

Different Anon here than the guy you three are raging at. His analogy is really shit, but I can see where it's coming from, so let me try and rephrase it.

It's not a matter of only seeing one entry in a series and saying their a fan of the entire series, it's seeing something which at best only only drops a few references and saying it.

To give an example, it would be like saying you played Marvel Vs. Capcom and then cosplayed Mega Man because you liked him so much. Yes, Mega Man is one of the characters in it, but there is no fucking detail about anything Mega Man related in the entire game. It is not like you only played one or two games and are being bitched out by people who have played all 20+. You have not played a Mega Man game, period. You do not know anything about the character or the series. Your entire experience with it is in a character cameo. It's equivalent to cosplaying a character because you saw a picture of them and thought they looked cool.

As for my pet peeve, gonna have to go with yaoi bitches. IT'S NOT CUTE TO PRETEND YOU'RE GAY MEN, STOP FLAUNTING YOUR QUEER ASS, OUT-OF-CHARACTER "SHIP" WITH NO BASIS IN CANON.

I have a lot of pet peeves, but they're all pretty minor and not really worth mentioning. Nothing that makes me enraged, just eyeroll things that are probably pet peeves for everyone.

    My big one, though?

People who are "in character" when cosplaying, outside of appropriate places.

If you're in a skit, or posing for pictures, things like that -- in character is great, and encouraged. If someone approaches you and addresses you as the character, then it's okay to respond in character. (Example -- sometimes people will come up to me, and quote lines from whatever series I'm cosplaying, and I'll reply in-character briefly, then laugh it off and go back to being a nerd wearing a costume.)

Everything outside of that? Fucking stop it, you don't have to LARP just because you're cosplaying. There's nothing I hate more than not being able to speak to someone because they ARE Sephiroth for the day. I know some people feel it makes their costume better by BEING the character, but it just irritates me to no end when people do it the entire time they're in costume. I've been "run off" from a lot of photoshoots because I couldn't even talk to the other people about anything unless I was speaking to them as their character. BS.

    - no wigs (when clearly necessary)
    - fatties (when their costume is 5 sizes too small)
    - elitism (when they're nothing more than mediocre)
    - shiny fabric
    - butterfaces (unless the character calls for one)
    - no posing while picture taking (cause it just ends up looking ridiculous and awkward)
    - WILL YAOI FOR MONEY/POCKEY/etc
    - FREE HUGS

We tend to go outside of the LARP room and stay in character... but there's always those fucking idiots that don't realize one of the main rules we tell them during LARP opening ceremony - not everyone is LARPing, so don't bother them or act like a jackass in character.

I hate it when I'm at a convention and I'm in a group/gathering, and people start comparing our outfits out loud. Now, try to look at this from THIS perspective: you're one of the few *gasp!* decent cosplayers who cosplay for fun, not the popularity and/or attention whoring. I'm a humble cosplayer who steers clear from drama and loves nothing more then to converse with another dressed up from the same series, especially the same character.

Now, I *hate* it when people start saying out loud, "I like THAT person's cosplay better" and point to me in front of other cosplayers OF THE SAME CHARACTER. It puts ME on the spot and *I* end up getting dirty looks, like I was purposely trying to be better then everyone else. At a con earlier this year, there was a very rude chick who kept demanding, not asking, for my picture during a gathering. We were doing group photos at the time, so I unable to move about and get her a solo shot just yet. While I'm standing there in a group with people cosplaying as the same character, she keeps LOUDLY proclaiming how I'm "the best" and how BADLY she *needs* my picture, and was bitching about how long I was taking.

Wtf. Not only did she keep attracting attention to me, it made things pretty awkward at the gathering. Oh, and she winded up taking my picture with a shitty little disposable camera; all that whining for THAT.

I disagree to an extent. One of my best cosplay memories was at ConnectiCon (I don't remember what year, it was the one where the con almost fell apart because they didn't have enough money), I was dressed as Ed from FMA and this dealer yells at me "Hey shorty!" and I yelled back "Who's so short that they are the size of a bean that can't be seen?" and we had a good laugh about that. He was actually kind of disapointed that I was the only one who did that

I actually used to be friends with a girl who did something very similar. She kept saying how she hated drama and was just wanting to have fun, then proceeded to yell at a contest judge (I think her friend) demanding to know why she didn't give her an award.

I think my biggest pet peeve is when people won't cosplay something because it's been done too much. It doesn't matter how well they could cosplay the character, or how much they like them. They won't touch it if it's popular.

They'll be like 'oh you can do your stupid L cosplay this year, but WE'LL be doing Black Butler. We're cooler because we have a lesser known cosplay.'

Never mind the fact that Black Butler is gonna be huge this year and they may blend in with the crowd more than me.

Hate to disagree with /cgl/ but OP pic isn't all that bad. She says in the description that she has a wig and that the point of the costume was to show off her fake tattoo. Not to mention she's actually cosplayed as Fai (which doesn't completely fail, it seems), so it wasn't a "B'aww, this is too hard", SNJ crossover thing.
I mean, shit, yeah, she doesn't look a thing like Fai and the costume sucks, but I think we can all say we've seen worse. She's, at least, got some pretty good excuses.

Anyway, now that I'm done ranting, I have to say elitists and shitty wigs. And the store-bought cosplayers who think they deserve just as much attention as the ones who spend hours and hours making theirs. Hot Topic Misa and 'Dark Chi' (/Freya) cosplayers.

lazy ass closet cosplayers. i'm willing to forgive a lot in cosplay (inappropriate figures and/or off-colors, to a certain degree), but i just CANNOT STAND when someone throws on something they had in their closet and calls it cosplay. an L takes the time to do the makeup, buy a wig, or even just dye their hair black and style it, and you know what, i'll think it's still pretty lazy, but at least they put a little thought into it. but a longsleeved white shirt and no shoes doesn't make a scrawny blonde girl L, no matter how you slice it!!

so yes - fatties, flatchests, wrong colors, okay.
lazy closet cosplay - not okay.

also, in the lazy cosplay category, i include 'ebay' style costumes that people dont take the time to iron the creases out of after shipping. i can understand if you can't sew, i'm no artisan myself, but at LEAST iron out the godforsaken creases, people!

Yeah, that was part of what I said. What you described is what I meant by:

    >If someone approaches you and addresses you as the character, then it's okay to respond in character. (Example -- sometimes people will come up to me, and quote lines from whatever series I'm cosplaying, and I'll reply in-character briefly, then laugh it off and go back to being a nerd wearing a costume.)

The point is that you weren't pretending to BE the character, the ENTIRE time you were in costume. Which is what I hate.

Girls who think that if they throw together any outfit that has lace and or frills = Princess Ai. Really, She has about 10 different RECOGNIZABLE outfits throughtout the series. Put some effort in and make one of those. Ai is probably one of the most hot topiced/ closet cosplayed characters.

I guess I'll add onto the crossplay thing. I love crossplaying when it's done well (Zolo!), but when females don't care to bind themselves or when males don't care to disguise their package it irritates me. After all, I don't want to see boobs on Guy Cecil and I don't want Sakura to look like she has more down south than she's supposed to.

Being a DD, I completely understand that some women can only bind themselves to a certain extent. But I just wish they would crossplay characters that just didn't show their chest area if they want to crossplay that much.
