I was one of the organisers, so I'm curious how you guys took it- as you guys won't bullshit if something was dreadful.

Ai-honey, did I spy you on stage? I was working in the photo area, but I nipped out quickly to see who was belting out 'melodies of life'.

I enjoyed it in general - no complaints from an organisational point of view.

Some twat in a red costume ran into the table I was sitting at at one point in the evening and spilled a pint of beer all down my costume, then kept running. If I ever find out who that twat was, I will force-feed them their own reproductive organs.

It rocked, but next time, do something about location and/or accommodation.

I ended up staying with my grandparents, despite leaving early, the subways were shut and none of the taxi's would take me and my friend because we didn't have enough money to pay up front.

tl;dr Actual ball was good, everything else in my day sucked.

Oh definitely- we're never using that place again. Jess and Emily reckon the bloomsbury ballroom might be good if there is a next time, as it's in central london there'll be more hotels nearby. (Those cabbies outside do try to rip you off though- one cheeky bastard tried to charge £55 to ship Trixie Malicious, Johnny Lazer and their plus +1s to brixton. Yeah, I don't think so mate. I got it to £25.)

    >>1451596
    >>1451567
We were not told how problematic the staff were going to be- the doormen weren't briefed on ANYTHING Jess and Emily had discussed with their organizer. We were not told the bar would close before the ball did, either- another reason a different location would be ideal.

Aggh those doormen were useless. They wanted to do everything totally wrong, and weren't willing to change to OUR PLANS. But otherwise, it went fantastically.

The venue was fab architecturally, but from a logistical point of view, and an organisational point of view, it was a nightmare. Not enough facilities for workers, and awful choice of lighting in the non-main areas.

Surprisingly, considering how small that dance floor was and how cramped it was around the bar, I didn't notice any otaku stench at all. But then I was wearing a face mask for most of the evening.

Actually, here's one thing that did bug me - where the hell was Yaya? I saw her on stage doing her singing bit, but it seemed like after she'd done that she just buggered off to the VIP room or something and wasn't seen again for the rest of the ball. I would have liked to have had my picture taken with her, and I don't think it's all that unreasonable to actually want to interact a bit with the "guest of honour".
    >> Ford Fantastic 12/01/08(Mon)14:19 No.1451866
    >>1451857
Actually I saw her standing around right inbetween the dancefloor and bar talking to ai-honey about half an hour after she was on stage. I told her that I loved the character and song and thought she did a really good performance, she kept thanking me and was really grateful, she seemed like she really was very worried about messing it up. Definitely thought she was a really nice person, I'm glad I got to chat with her.
    >> Anonymous 12/01/08(Mon)14:24 No.1451875
Surely you must realize that a cosplay celebrity of her stature wouldn't expect to have to associate with the norms, she wants your adoration but not your conversation....

Hey, I'm not saying she should have made herself available for deep-and-meaningfuls with every pleb who wanted a natter, but it would have been nice to have, say, a "Get your photo taken with Yaya!" setup so those of us who wanted photos could get them, instead of just hoping to spot her around the bar. You wouldn't even need to run it for the whole evening, just do it for an hour or two after her performance or something.

She was actually dancing with a large group of people for ages later on the evening, so she wasn't hidden away. i preferred the fire performer though!

It's one thing to have a panel with a seasoned costumer but to make them into a guest like cosplay is some sort of industry is bound to turn messy and is really silly when you think about it.
    >> Anonymous 12/01/08(Mon)17:11 No.1452173
The location was a bit meh for hotels and travel, but it was lovely for a first time event, so no huge complaints, but would be good to see somewhere new next time.

Yaya seemed quite pleasant. She was dancing on the floor for quite some time. Granted she's personal friends with one of the people she was dancing with, but not many people want to be stuck on a dance floor with a group of complete strangers.

If you want to pick holes at guests, then why was Sonia Leong a VIP? She didn't even do anything, not even promo art, so I don't see why she should be a special guest???

The security were a bit lame. They made VIPS stand outside in the rain/cold for a few minutes while ticket holders walked straight in. Something smells of not quite right there.

Also people were walking into the boxes and thought they were for public use. I think there should have at least been a sign on the doors of the boxes to identify that they had been prehired.

The entertainment was really good imo.
Good mix of Japanese music, general dancey stuff, actual set dance stuff and some good performances.

Really enjoyed Trixie, but I think some people were a bit... stunned.

I won't bother whiteknighting her (what's the point?) but she was lovely. I just came back from sight-seeing with her, Brian and Emily where we dragged her to PUBS and did silly British crap. I mean, I understand the people who spent like five minutes talking to her may not be credible but from someone who spent the last three days with her solid, sharing a changing room whilst I watched her do all this tiring crap without complaining once, you know, I was surprised (I woulda complained a whole lot more myself..).

If you want to look towards guests who were a complaining pain in the backside and didn't appear for more than five minutes you should be looking towards the French, OH GOD were they hard work. I can understand the shit time they had; they missed their train, they were late, they're foreign but they complained about their dressing room (it was small and shit but it was the same as Yaya's and Brians and we were sharing that WITH them and they didn't care, I should mention I was SUPPOSED to be sharing with them but they just stuck my suitcase in the hallway! anyone coulda nicked my shit, they tried to suggest I get changed in the bathroom I was like wtf shit off I'm a performer too and by that time Yaya and Brian had made room for us without even asking bless 'em), the lack of food (yet again most of us found our own food; we got some fish and chips but by the time we got it was cold).I felt so bad for them, me and Yaya tried to help the French girl with the brokem Gwendolyn wings but she was so upset there was no use. :/ And there was no exclusive VIP area, the boxes were somewhat of a joke since everyone kept using them (we didn't mind really.. though we would've liked a glass of our champagne ;__;) so none of us really had anywhere to hide.

    >>1452617
lol, except her and Mark are huge Macross fans so I had to stop them both from spoiling shit (I haven't watched Frontier yet), besides it's not the staple outfit, you'd really have to have watched the series to know about that dress/performance/transformation sequence. So um, try again. >:O

Overall I had a fucking AWESOME time, I loved singing, I loved dancing, the venue was great. There are a few things that need to be sorted for next time (like making sure the bloody cleaners go in first and telling the security people to STFU), but for a first time event it was AMAZING. :D

My experience with Yaya was that while perfectly nice and polite, she does the bare minimum of what was expected for her. And while she doesn't demand attention, she'll ask for it and if you deny it she looses interest. I had her at an event and her enthusiasim for it went out after I told her for the 3rd time we had no plans that evening to put her on stage. While she wasn't a jerk about she seemed to stop caring.

Settle down, love. I didn't accuse Yaya of being rude or stand-offish or any of that; I simply said that I didn't see her at all apart from when she was on stage. It's nice that other people saw her on the dance floor; I didn't, and I simply suggested that having a dedicated area for photos for an hour or two would have been nice, especially since not all of us could make it to the Tokyotoys event. Frankly, even if I did see her on the dance floor I wouldn't have felt particularly inclined to ask her for a photo - I don't like intruding on people's personal time.

By the way, you have a lovely singing voice, but try to loosen up a bit when you're performing. You looked stiff and uncomfortable up there.

And your all extraordinarily jelous!! What, cant accept that someone can be hawt and sweet at the same time? Yaya is totally lovely as well as being intelligent and peppy. I know form the organisers, she was only paid minimal expenses to attend so you can ditch the 'Diva' comments. And even if she is just like that to peoples faces, at least she was doing it to be professional. Speaking of professional, anyone see the French cosplayer's anywhere near the dancefloor or out of the VIP area?

Ysabelle (??) had something on her costume break, and as far as I understood she was too upset to even consider going onstage. We were trying to sort out having Damien (who was lovely) perform onstage with a spotlight to her in the boxes, but they weren't having any of it.

I ended up fetching food for the guests AND doorstaff AND runners- pizzas, but they didn't get to the Grand until about 10. The Grand really isn't the place for photos when there is hundreds of people in it; afterall the Alice in Wonderland themed area was tiny, hence the Tokyotoys thing. Besides, if we moved too far away from the monitors you couldn't hear shit (Yaya had this problem..) and I didn't want to look like a tool moving around when Choco was standing still using her mic stand.. :< Still, a friend of me recorded some of our song so I'll look back on it again when I get the chance.

I REALLY want to a jpop/rock/anime set for Aya with a proper band and dance around the stage like a lunatic, that'd be awesome. Need to get ahold of a drummer though.

Speaking of Basara and Macross 7 I am thinking of doing Mylene at some point (I hope.. it depends if I like her, I still need to watch it).

You know Choco has said that if anyone cosplays as Mylene before she gets to, she'll force-feed them their own fingers? I hope she really likes you...!

Yeah sorta agree with anon here. I think its something that comes naturally to Choco, when she sings she injects such passion into it and moves around a lot more but everyone is different and thats just her strength.

.. I'm confused, they didn't say anything about Choco. *__* although I agree, she's a lovely singer. I look forward to a set up and a stuff so I can dance around a bit more. I can't stay I like standing around much either.

My mistake for being confusing. I was saying that in regards to what the other person was saying about whether you move around enough or show enough passion its something Choco does so well. I wasn't comparing I was highlighting her strengths. I believe and always have done that the con scene is lucky to have such an incredible singer.

Yeah, I agree wholeheartedly. Really, we're so very different it would be pretty hard to make much of a comparison anyway.

Eyes on me - Amecon, she sung this as the ending song at the ball. It's beautiful. There's a lot of background noise but give it ten seconds or so.

That and Koda Kumi's 'You' pretty much made my night at Ame.
So, what's the overall on the ball then, without going into too much detail? From comments I'm seeing, it sounds like it was enjoyable but needed a better location and less shitty bouncers (but what event doesn't)? What's the over/under on there being a second one?

You should've said something, most of the night I was telling people who I was- I would probably have hugged you. I reckon I convinced 4 people to try the demo though, so Mike and Jerry _will_ be happy.

It was awesome, I had nearly as much fun as I did at my first convention which is saying something.

I think Emily is still considering next year. She needs a little while to recover from this years I think! She seemed more chilled on Monday though and we were talking about different venues and shit. I loved the Grand, I really did but it was just a little too small for everyone. Something the same on a bigger scale with a bigger dancefloor would be great (and you know CLEAN -__- would be a plus, stupid staff).

    >>1453971
AHAH! I recognise you now. :>
    >> PrinceMark !hjAE94JkIU 12/02/08(Tue)18:12 No.1454041
Just wanted to post a very quick message to say that I thought the event was pretty damn awesome. Yeah the venue could have been a bit cleaner, and the staff were pretty disorganised and didn't really help Emily out much with the technical preperations. But, overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable night.

I'm disappointed I didn't get to see the fire performer, but the other performers were really good and the most important part was that it was solid fun.

There was a lot of win costumes going around (lots of original designs) and there was no annoying weeaboos!

Not going to bother whiteknighting (I've been informed it is incredibly pointless) but Yaya was nice to everybody she met, never turned a photo down once, and danced/partied along with everybody else.

Definitely hoping there is going to be another one at a better location. I had my reservations at first, but I was extremely happy to have my cynicism misplaced.

tl; dr: Good time. Event was not perfect. Staff didn't sort out some things. Performers awesome.

    PS: moar picz pls

    The ball was A-MAZING

I have no complaints at all, Emily did an awesome job, I hope she had a fun time!

Yaya was of course delightful, was nice to meet her properly on the Saturday at the Tokyo Toys panel.

The performances at the ball where all ace as well, I loved Kelly and Chocos performances, I was screaming like a mad person at the end of it!

I personally loved the venue, and thought it was very well organised. Everyone looked fantastic and seemed to be having a brilliant night!

    Thumbs up from me!
