    MTV'S TRUE LIFE: I'M A FAN BOY
Are you obsessed with comic books, anime, fantasy, or manga? Do you like to dress up as your favorite character and attend conventions with other fans? Have you ever waited in line overnight for a book, movie, or videogame release? Do you have tattoos depicting your favorite brand or characters? Have you ever missed work, school, or other important events to engage in role-playing or cosplay? Are you misunderstood by your family or significant other because of it? Have you ever been told to "grow up" by someone important to you? If you're an obsessed fanboy (or girl), MTV wants to hear from you.

If you appear to be between the ages of 16 and 28 and identify with any of the above, MTV wants to hear your story. Email us at tlfanboy@gmail.com. Please be sure to include your name, location, phone number, and a recent photo.

I read a while ago in some magazine an interview with three hopefuls for one of the Real Worlds and another hopeful for another True Life type show that MTV was doing. They didn't make it and through all the interviews and videos submitted they built every one of them up to think they were going to make it. So don't get your hopes to high up.

Just remember anon's, you're putting yourself out there for the entire world to judge. One of my friends was on the True Life: I'm Getting Married episode and people dissed her on the Internet, catcalled to her in the street...she didn't mind because she got paid, but just know that you're representing an entire community and that everyone's going to judge you.

I'm more afraid about being labeled and edited to look silly. I love cosplay, but I don't want the entire world knowing it's what I do. All of those people I hated in high school, my future employers, my friends and family, my boyfriend's family and friends...they're all going to see me as a cosplayer. That makes me uncomfortable.

Well on top of being a cosplayer, I'm very openly gay, but the only people who don't know are my parents. I'm extremely wary of coming out to them and I don't want to do it on national t.v. and I don't know if I'm ready to do it period. Also I understand that they will probably make me look like an emotional unstable fool, though I'm not really emotionally unstable, I'm just kind of depressed with life in general right now.

Honestly I highly doubt I'll do it if they want me to. I don't want that kind of exposure. There is a girl who comes into my work who was on "I'm going to fat camp" and we have people just coming up to her trying to talk to her about it and whispering and staring constantly. I kind of dislike people in general so I really don't want them to come up to me and try to talk to me about "that cartoon thing" all the time.

These kinds of things never give said obscure social groupings the kind of publicity they really need or could use. The only people in those social groups/hobbies stable and well-spoken enough to represent themselves and their peers well are the people who'd have the sense not to submit themselves to public scrutiny.

Not the person you were responding to, but I know I entered because I wasn't really thinking about what it really entailed: ratings. At first, I was all, "Whee! Get to talk about my favorite hobby in the whole world! I'm moderately attractive, great career and life, what could possibly go wrong?" Then you start to think about the rest of MTV's shows, and that it's all about ratings and finding the craziest people ever and knowing that it's going to be aired all over America and suddenly it doesn't seem so awesome.

    >>1417747
Actually not as much as you guys do around here. I just think it's going to make a joke out of something a lot of people appreciate and put their hard work into. So one idiot or attention whore is going to make a lot more people look bad because they're vain. Just look at the ad description. They're looking for dysfunctional crazed people.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/08(Thu)00:16 No.1417804
    >>1417792
Well maybe if you didn't look down upon people trying to apply so much, then it would make more sane respectful people apply? Encouragement and support will bring nothing but good. Yet cruelty, snide remarks, and blatant disapproval will make the sane people run away as quickly as possible leaving only the crazy attention whores you're so obviously against.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/08(Thu)00:23 No.1417821
    >>1417804
I actually know sane people are applying. And while they are sane, they are abolutely self-absorbed and vain, not surprisingly. That would be a fair representation of part of the cosplay community I guess. I just don't believe for one minute that they will get on the show. Not with that ad description. And not with channels like G4 making cosplayers look bad. MTV will look for a cosplayer whose hobby creates conflict between the star and society. Dramu, fights with family, people making fun of them whatever. Reality television is a joke. They select people who will make you want to watch and the crazier the star the better the chances of that happening. If you've watched any reality show, I'm sure you could agree. I'm not jealous, if that's what you're saying. I just think this is going to backfire on someone who thinks they're on the show opening people's minds. I don't think reality television works that way; it finds a niche and exploits it negatively.

Anyone on this, or any MTV show (with a few exceptions) is going to be made out in a bad way. Just watch any behind the scenes interviews with people featured on the show... they will do a whole lot of editing (even asking people to "reenact" stuff for the cameras, or editing reactions etc... like all reality TV) to make it look how they want it to look. If they want you to look like an obsessed weirdo, you will look like an obsessed weirdo. If they want to show you in a sympathetic light, you will be shown that way.

Before he left for the show he wore weezer black framed glasses, talked about Dragon Ball Z and had the same girlfriend for 4 years (they had recently broken up when he made the show). You're not going to see a contract unless they have a tape to begin with so you have no leverage to demand one at this point.

Once you make that video and send it off you're implying that you agree to whatever demands the network asks of you when and if you're selected as per rules and regulations regarding participation and performance.

You'll be asked to sign a waiver of liability in exchange for a cash payment that basically takes away your right to file any litigation against them if you feel that any part or the whole of the performance in question does not best represent your character and good name.

This is where the typical fame seeking whore or cretin screws themselves royally and set themselves up for potentially catastrophic consequences regarding jobs, careers and relationships.

You also waive property rights to the videotape once it arrives in their hands, unless they provided you with specific instructions on how to request the footage back from them during the casting interview.

Hope you get a good lawyer that can cut through boilerplate.

Okay okay okay. Let me do this right...ok this is MTV right? Alright alright..

SUP, 'DIS YO' BOI MASA D. UP IN THIS BITCH, COMIN' ATCHA LIVE-

No, fuck that. Don't want to sound like ni-OOPS, HAD I FINISHED THAT I WOULD'VE HAD TO FORWARDED THIS E-MAIL TO TRUE LIVE: I'M A GODDAMN RACIST.

Anyway, the name's Masa D. Luffy, but my real name is Nicolas Rodriguez. See, the trouble is, I'm 21 years old right? I just recently got convicted of a DUI, and yes. I'm a cosplayer, and I read somewhere between the informal measuring units of shitload and fuckton of anime and manga. Don't get it twisted, I'm not socially inept. As per my high score with how many chicks I've scored with, the number is currently at 10, so I think for a young man such as myself with standards, that's not a bad thing.

I think I shouldn't say that though, considering you guys are looking for people that God decided to make punchlines out of, not ridiculous outliers, y'know. One in a million. NOT THAT I'D BE ONE OF THOSE KINDS OF PEOPLE. NO SIR NOT ME.

Oh yeah. Nerd. Right. So anyway, in my spare time I like to roleplay and read anime/manga. Today I think I've killed 10 hours on the computer, as of this writing. Who else do you know can get away with that? Only a badass like me. That's what.

Jokes and highly hyperbolized personality aside, I'm a college student/jobless/pendingDUI/anime and manga reading/hispanic/dancing/cosplaying/ridiculously horny/extremely outgoing guy.

Anyway, from what I've heard, y'all nig nogs from MTV already contacted my friend Sonnya. Yeah, she's a sweet girl. If she has a chance at it, forget about me, shit. You guys need to put her in the show, seriously. Though don't ruin her life too much when you edit her life to look more awkward and fucked just to make that quick buck. She's a nice girl. y'know? And I'd have to kick an ass or two if I heard otherwise, y'got it?

Anyway, so yeah. I cosplay. My main goal in the cosplay community is that I want to become the AX King. See, there's an anime/manga called One Piece, where the main character strives to be the Pirate King. Much like the poor deluded Monkey D. Luffy, I Masa D. Luffy am the man who'll become the AX King, through notorious acts of infamy at anime conventions. I've had sex in public.

Did you know? The cosplay community has tabloids. Oh yeah, you can read that shit here: http://zip.4chan.org/cgl/imgboard.html

Sonnya, myself, and many many others (Have you talked to my other friend Laura yet?? Real sweetheart, not much of a singing voice though) are gabbed about here. Its like we're our own celebrities! HA!

...Okay seriously, everything I've said so far is true. My dad thinks cosplaying makes me homosexual, and that its for kids, blah blah blah. Fuck it, its my life. I'm going to be a successful person someday anyhow, so I'll enjoy myself while I'm young. THAT'S WHAT YOU LIKE TO SEE RIGHT MTV? BUCKWILD CRAZYNESS WITH NO REAL FORETHOUGHT RIGHT? FUCK YEAH! LET'S ALL GO TO HELL IN A FAST CAR AND MAKE IT HOT!

Ahem. Before I lose my composure again. Since you've all requested some videos and shit. Here's a few.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n6UQ1MMW-Y - This one is me dancing in my outfit, when I still sucked at hiphop.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9GLsJ6n-hQ - This is me dancing in my Zoot Suit. That's right, I own that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdPrnnTLUUs - This is me being obnoxious at a convention.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nG0XjJBJI8 - This is part 1 of 2 of me getting fucking WASTED OUT OF MY MIND at a convention
(that's right, even nerds get down)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rysye-uhdao - This is the comedy panel that I organized with Anime Expo, the largest con of the west coast. That's the convention I intend to become AX King at, since AX stands for Anime Expo. BEL, BIV DEVOE. HAHAHA, NOW YOU KNOW. YO SLICK, BLOW. ITS DRIVING ME, OUT OF MY MIIIIIIIIIIND~

So, what? Are you going to get me on MTV yet? HUH? HUH? HELLO!

    Signed,

Masa D. Luffy, future AX King

P.S: Anyone that knows me can tell you, the words I said up top are not something I just exaggerate for the sake of it, I genuinely think act and feel this way. Attached to the e-mail are some recent pictures. As of last week, previous conventions, etc. Furthermore, I have a 7 inch penis and my phone number is 805-268-3490. Do you want my social security number too? Shit..

Seriously...get me on your show. What are you waiting for?

I applied because I'm pretty sane and together, and the one episode I've seen of True Life (the step dancing one) didn't shine a too-awful light on the participants.

They probably won't want me, though, since I'm not drama-ridden or bnf.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/08(Thu)17:36 No.1419222
Part of me wants to enter for shits and giggles because I think I'm one of the more normal 20-something cosplayers out there, and my family and friends all know about my hobby so I'm not embarrassed or anything. But I would hate to have them edit it to make me look stupid, which is that shows like this love to do. They'll edit it until you're an idiot, villain, vain person, etc. Not being depicted fairly would piss me off too much. Being on TV isn't worth it.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/08(Thu)17:50 No.1419243
I'd be tempted to do this... since I'm an older (25) cosplayer nerd and would like to prove that some of us are eccentric in a quirky, fun way. But, alas, this is MTV and I despise MTV. Also, while my employers already know I'm a bit nerdy, this would be a really big difference. Yes, let's have my yaoi doujin on tv, that'll make me look responsible. Also, living in a small town, being on reality tv... you never live down. It's happened where I live once before,... she never lived it down.
