What does /jp/ think of Heisig's RtK? I mean, seriously, is it really a complete waste of time like some people suggest?

actually i've never seen anyone be derisive of Heisig on here, which is suprising, i guess it's because people here tend to be intelligent even though we don't act like it.

It's useless if you're DUMB as a (disgusting) PIG. Otherwise, nope.

It depends on what the hell you're trying to accomplish. It teaches you only the meanings of a shitload of kanji, which works quite well if say, you want to translate manga or very slowly read a VN (basically, reading anything Japanese-related on the computer). So when have you deal with kanji, you can very quickly look it up in an electronic dictionary in a few seconds. It's a very quick and dirty method. No, you won't know how to pronounce the word, but you will know how to look it up.

From there on, it is up to you to take things to the next level and memorize the Japanese pronounciation and stroke order. Because really, do you want to depend on a Japanese dictionary for the rest of your life?

On average, how many Kanji should one memorize in a day? I've been hearing everywhere from 5 to 50 and I can't tell who's trolling who.

Too many more than 5 and you won't be retaining much of the previous kanji you learned the day before.

I would put the low end at 5, sweet spot at 20-25, and if you are studying full time there's no reason you couldn't do 50-100 a day or more.

I do Heisig in conjuction with AJATT and it's fucking awesome. I recommend going through Kanji Odyssey 2001 when you get finished or are almost finished with Heisig. It works beautifully in conjunction with the Sentence method from AJATT.

no no no, the only reason you should be doing 5 a day is if that's all you have time to do, you won't be forgetting much using this method.

I managed 10 a day when I was learning them, but that was by proper rote and learning 3-5 different readings for each one (for those that had enough readings of course, for things like 員 I only learned the one reading it had).
After a while though that became a real strain, especially with revisiting old kanji.
