What was /a/ like in 2006?
>>
shit
>>
Terrible, but hindsight is 20/20.
>>
shit
>>
Shit. 60% of the board was desu spam and KyoAnus lickers.
>>
If I were to want to have a Disgaea thread anywhere in 4chan, where would it go?
/vg/ never shows any in the catalog and /v/ is a massive steaming pile of shit who'll definitely call 'pedomoeshit' the second I step in
And there wasn't a Disgaea anime
So where?
>>
>>90557104

But there was a Disgaea anime.
>>
>>90557104
/a/ and /jp/ have both have Disgaea threads with varying degrees of success.
>>
>>90557104
I would assume nighttime /v/ would be your best bet, however I haven't tried posting there in years. Surely the way people like to portray /v/ as hating everything Japanese can't be true. Do they hate Dark Souls, Sony, and Nintendo now?
>>
>>90557104
see
>>90557162
>>90557189
There was a mildly long disgaea thread a couple months ago if I recall right. We have them every now and again reminding people to never watch the anime.
>>
>>90557162
A delicious PV isn't an anime, anon.
That's all there was.
>>90557189
>>90557367
Thanks, I'll try posting about that one manga it has and try to get one running some time
And keep it related to the characters/story more than the game.
really surprised /jp/ would even tolerate it though
>>90557346
I'll try it if this doesn't pan out
I just want to talk about it with people who actually care about it, and not a bunch of normals complaining about the grind and how little reading comprehension they have on some filthy anime forum.
>>
>>90557500
By all means Its always nice having a disgaea thread. Also not sure if you are just denying the anime's existence but there was definitely one. It was god awful. An example of how not to do an adaptation. There are a couple LN's also which you could give a look at as well.
>>
basically like /b/ but with anime

it was a more simpler time back then, back when you can call someone a /b/tard all throughout 4chan and they would take it as a compliment.
>>
>>90558065
>basically like /b/ but with more anime

fixed
/b/ was pretty anime loving back then
>>
It was like now but with a little more lolis, different series and slower downloads.
well, we had Franken Fran threads, that is.

/a/, /jp/, /tg/.
>>
It was shit. Like gaia or /b/ today. /b/ was more like what /a/ is now.
It was some time around the expulsion of Shii and the reappearance of 0037 (w2c 2) that /a/ improved up to a point.
>>
>>90559413
I went from /b/ to /f/ to /a/

and when moot gets drunk again and makes a manga board I'll be going to that.

Answer me honestly, what the fuck is /tg/ for?
I thought it was tabletop games and maybe LARPing and shit, but I see them everywhere on /a/ and they like almost everything
>>
Lots of Haruhi and desu
>>
this is going to hit the newfags hard, but /a/ and /v/ were pretty much the opposite of what they are now, with /a/ beign the very offtopic hur dur board and /v/ the elitist no newfriends one, after /v/ got hit by the newshits hard, /a/ got scared shitless and became a hardcore version of old /v/

i miss old /v/

not sure, we have plenty of OC from seasonal shows, you know, ERU-ERUFU, the quality threads from psycho-pass, vividred mayo jokes, another pie threads, etc
>>
>>90562863
>vividred mayo jokes, another pie threads

Those are awful though, they're like wannabe memes.

I never understood how the pie thing was supposed to be funny, it felt like someone was trying way too hard to make ~OC~ but had absolutely no sense of humor and low level photoshop skills.

It really is true that older 4chan was intelligent people pretending to be retarded and new 4chan is retarded people pretending to be clever. You can thank 'We are anonymous, we are unstoppable' etc. shit for that. The moment a board takes on a collective 'we' identity is a sign it's going downhill, there aren't many boards left without that mentality but they're all pretty good.

Everyone acted relatively more retarded, /b/ culture was the norm, and we were definitely not nearly as stuck up as we are now. lol and emotes were used more often, and epic, fail et al were still fresh and in common usage. Everything was either Epic/WIN or Fail/AIDS.

There was no "gb2Reddit", back then it was gb2Gaia. Shit hit the fan when we realized that Reddit was basically a training ground for newfags until they understood how to not APPEAR as newfags right off the bat so they could post on 4chan.
>>
>>90559357

It's January, so it still counts. Sort of.
>>
Awful, the board would be destroyed for days at a time from either big 3 discussion or "I hate the big 3 and think discussing them should be banned" discussions.

I mean DAYS at a time. Index was actually a savior when it came out because it was discussion about something that wasn't the big 3.

Much much worse, most people I assume are waiting for another anime related board as /jp/ didn't really deliver the goods.

Or maybe we can get all the cancer (People who care more about fapping than anime and manga) to go away and /a/ will be better.
>>
>>90563716
Probably better, we've even out a lot of the edges to the point where post quality is up quite a bit, but at the same time I can't help we've forgotten a bit of that soul we used to have back in our childhood. In the sense that some things weren't taken as seriously back then and we were better for it, but at least posting quality is up.

I like Anime, my manga-collection has about 1600 german volumes right now and I also hate "moeshit".

The reason to be ashamed of liking anime is because of the fanbase anime/manga attracts. And at least here in germany about 10 years ago the fanbase was different, demographically.
Even if its just a small minority, but weeaboos, who act like that in public or even on conventions, are, at least in my opinion, the cancer of the whole fanscene.

August 2, 2009
Site maintenance is now complete. A more detailed post about what was changed, and a real news post are both coming "soon."

If you are having trouble accessing sections of the site, or the site entirely, do the following:

1. Remove any entries for 4chan.org in your hosts file. On Windows, this file is located at %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, on Mac OS X, /private/etc/hosts, and on Linux/BSD /etc/hosts. If you still can't figure out how, Google "How do I edit hosts file?"

2. Flush your DNS cache. On Windows XP, type "ipconfig /flushdns" at the command prompt. (Note that on Windows Vista and Windows 7, you'll need to elevate your command prompt to administrator privileges. To do this, right click cmd.exe, and select "Run as administrator".) On Mac OS X, open terminal and type "dscacheutil -flushcache", and if that doesn't work, try "lookupd -flushcache". On Linux, type the command "/etc/init.d/nscd restart". If that doesn't make sense, try "How do I flush DNS?"

3. Try using a different DNS provider, like OpenDNS. "How do I change my DNS server?"

If you know anybody else having trouble accessing the site, please point them here. Thanks!

I like you. Really though, the moderate (I'm using moderate for lack of a better word. I love my anime and manga, it's really the only type of tv show I can stand, but I'm not fullblown waifu kawaii cute girls doing cute things fan that /a/ seems to cater to) seems to be really out of options. One end of the spectrum you're surrounded by naruto fans and the other you're surrounded by the average inhabitant of /jp/, and there's very little middle ground as far as communities go.
>>

This.

/v/ actually likes japanese games more than you think. There are the usual "weaboo" shitposters but in general japanese games do get good discussion. Hell, the most popular game there right now is Dark Souls.

>You have to admit though, there really was a "cut" about what /a/-culture was when things like K-On and other girls-only cast anime started becoming popular.

Except this is completely wrong, because K-ON wasn't the first show to invent the idea of a cast full of cute girls, and /a/, and even /b/ had plenty of love for shows retards call "moeshit" today. Rozen Maiden is a perfect example. Back then it became immortalized in 4chan culture (for better or worse), whereas today a thread about it or similar shows is constantly at risk for shitposting by "moeshit is killing the industry" faggots.

/a/ is objectively better as a whole now.

It might just be nostalgia goggles, but I think it used to be more fun back then, at least since I've been here.

2006 /a/ = /b/ + anime

2007/2008 /a/ was silly and fun. Kind of like 2006, except with more people and topics. Posting standards weren't very high in retrospect, but the community was lively and conflict was low compared to recent times. Lots of OC.

2009 /a/ saw a sudden rise in posting standards. People became less frivolous, saging became more prevalent, and newcomers, as well as general shitposting, were scorned. Maybe people grew up. The community took on an air of sternness. However, regulars were treated like kin and there were high quality discussions. However, such change does not come without reason. Conflict was high, with notable issues such as gorespammer and the Taiga/Lanced Jack fiasco.

2010/2011 /a/ was something of a transitional phase. The community became exponentially larger during this time (the post count doubled; it went from 29M to 59M), and with this came many changes. Looking back, it was sort of like a Cold War between shitposters and quality nazis, the two struggling for control in the background. Conflict was higher than ever during this time. But for the most part, /a/ held its ground and remained firm while the rest of 4chan succumbed. It was something to be proud of.

2012 /a/... was an abomination. Basically, the war went on and the shitposters won. This year demonstrated that all good things end in time, and /a/ was no exception to this rule. Especially in the second half, the shitposting was so overwhelming that it threatened the board's very foundations. Tripfaggots were rampant, crossboarders invaded with malicious intent and many threads were so unbelievably terrible that you could frequently see people talking about finally leaving /a/. Some joked that /a/ had finally gone back to its roots by turning into Anime/Random.

2013 /a/ seems to be a recovery period. People are coming to their senses and noticing all the bullshit running amok. Quality is still overall low, but it's getting better. Hopefully this trend will continue.

Mostly I think manga-threads or recommendation-threads are really the threads, that at least I can stand the most. The discussions are civil, the manga/anime in a lot of cases are the same I like and in general they seem to be more about the anime/manga, than about some overblown discussions about the advantages of one particular female character.

Im not sure if it is because of my age (come on, I have been here since the end of 2004 or if I just watched too much anime, so almost everything is just "same shit/different color". I am not sure what the average age of people here is but I think maybe people at around 26 are more rare here than 18/19 year old fags.

Waifuism wasn't actually a joke
"waifuism is a joke" was pretty much a joke

waifuism back then was outright religious when people read that "discourse" copypasta they didn't say "lol autism" they cried manly tears. I guess people were referring to their own experience with waifuism that they were the ones that laughed at the concept, not so much everyone else they though it was a good idea when it was introduced (though they did think practices like having a hug-pillow was cancer there were /x/-type threads on /a/ about summoning their waifus to the real world).

I'm not a big fan of KyoAni, most of the ecchi and high school SoL series I don't even watch, I'm usually into action and comedy series and a lot drama and psychological series, and like you I'm a mangafag, but I don't hate moe, I like cute girls though not exactly doing cute things mostly want them doing badass things and I don't think entire genres shouldn't be outright attacked due to what I believe tends to be perception and bias.

not to mention the attacks on moeshit tends to have a underlying decade war context at best, outright disrespect for anime as a medium at worse.
>>
>>90567067

I know Rozen Maiden was pretty popular, but a lot of the discussions also revolved around the story of it and not just about which "doll"/girl is the best/most "kawaii"/waifu etc.

It is just my experience, but I can see a clear difference between threads nowadays and threads in about 2006. Like every harem-anime nowadays has multiple threads for each episode, while before such shows mostly wear ignored. Even Girls Bravo or Dears didnt get that much exposure here on /a/ like some Vivired, Qwasar, IS etc.

For me it just depends. I just cant understand how things like Tamayura (I even watched 2 episodes of the OVA), in which nothing really happens in the episodes besides "lets have a trip" or "lets go shopping" can have fans. Same with K-On. I watched the first two episodes and it was the most boring anime I ever watched, because there is like no story at all. It was really like "normal girls doing normal things".

And because these were kinda popular (not sure about Tamayura though, still got two seasons, right?) it also influenced other anime and even LNs. It is like the Call of Duty of Anime.

I am btw. not denying anyone their love for such shows, just saying I dont really like where anime, and especially the fanbase, went because of that.

I agree. I mean, I understand that there are people who enjoy moe/cute girls doing cute things shows, but the fact those shows seem to just be drowning everything else out seems like such a waste. When other genres do the same thing (it undoubtedly happens to every dominant genre), it at least leaves room for different stories to be told a little bit, but the whole SoL thing is formulaic and monotonous even by anime standards.

Moe isn't a new trend, it was always part of anime culture. You are complaining about shows you don't like causing a "divide" in the board, but fans like yourself are the first to shit up threads by complaining about anime not being nothing but battle shonen and 80's-era gorefests.

Just ignore threads about shows you don't like. Everyone would be much happier if they all could do just that.

If you're watching Tamayura for plot progression, it's no wonder you didn't enjoy it. Tamayura is about mood and emotion. It's a mono no aware show. Yes, there are cute girls, but that's only the surface. Finding a connection with a deceased father through a shared passion, through his homeland. Uncertainty as to what to do with your future. Feeling like you have no dreams to follow while everybody else has such clear ones. Not every show needs to hit you over the head to make sure you get it.

If you don't like cute shows, that's fine. Every season there's a variety of anime to watch. There are moe shows and slice of life, but there are also mecha shows and grimdark and action shows and romance and comedy and drama. You can look at any season and find something to watch. Japan has always had a fascination with cute things. You can joke about kawaii all you want, but it's also part of their culture.

Regardless, you can talk about most things on /a/. You may not always get post-capped threads about your anime or manga of choice, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. There's plenty of great discussion to be had, you only need to put forth the effort to make quality contributions. It works much better than the fruitless lamentation of things you dislike.

I know what Tamayura wanted to tell, but I still thought it was really really boring, at least the OVAs. Like nothing happened besides walking to some mountains. And even then the "photography" aspect wasnt as important as the character-traits of each girl.

Besides that...
Even on /a/ there are anime that are "mostly" ignored or not talked about often. Giant Killing, when it aired. Then Kingdom right now. One Outs in the past. Tatami Galaxy while it aired.

It just seems the "girls-only" series are far more popular around here. I mean this Little Witch Academia was more popular than Death Billiards or Arve Rezzle with threads like "Why is she so cute?", "What does her panties smell like" and things like that.
>>
>>90568729
i think the idea is that /a/ is resistant to memes that have been cheapened by their popularity and goes for its own ones instead (which may or may not be any good).

it's one of the good things about the board that people rage against people using shit like "feels". really, you had a feel? go fuck yourself and come back when you can describe an experience with more depth than "i had a feeling about the thing"

waifuism was a religion people made entire essays defending
the big 3 were tolerated well because back then Bleach and Naruto were still tolerable
Gar threads were as big as moe threads, Gar was also worshipped religiously
before there were waifus there were anime goddesses

Well, it depends on how you define a meme. Some people think Jean is a 'meme' like 'milhouse is a meme now' is a meme, and you'd be hard pressed to differentiate the origin in a decisive manner. Likewise. I came here in, what, October or November of '05, and didn't start posting until February or March '06.

Tumblr and /cgl/ don't seem like as much as a problem to me as /v/ right now. Tumblrkids usually end up being drawfags at the very least. /v/ wants to bring all it's /r9k/ and /pol/ rot in here.
>>
>>90569900
Right, we just tell people to go back to /v/ or /leddit/ or /out/ or whatever. Fuck off; we're full.

Popularity doesn't stop you from having any discussion at all, though. People posting dumb shit and having fun has been 4chan from day one. There's always going to be an element of shitposting, as well. That's just a fact of life. You can thank social media for bringing in a generation of people who would otherwise have no business being on the internet. An influx of greater shitposting and changing in board dynamics resulted from that, and no matter how much we want it, there's no going back.

Cute Girl shows aren't to blame for discussion not happening. You didn't like Tamayura. You think it was boring. That's because you were watching it to see "what happened". It's not that kind of show, so it's no wonder that you didn't like it. And that's fine. As long as you're not going around shitting up /a/ with "I hate Tamayura, it's shit!" posts there is no problem. There 10 pages worth of threads, that's plenty of room for other discussion.

If you don't want to talk about Love Lab, you can talk about Uchouten Kazoku. If you don't want to talk about Loliball, you can talk about Gatchaman. If you don't want to talk about Kiniro Mosaic, you can talk about Railgun. If you don't want to talk about Teekyuu, you can get some better taste you scum. Across /a/, we watch everything that airs, and then some. There are always people that want to have a good discussion about anything. Make the posts that you want to see.

So is your taste.

I don't care what /a/ thinks about TTGL these days. TTGL was one of the most fun experiences I had discussing on /a/. Same with CG.
>>
>>90569210
It's sort of like /sp/. Most of the people posting Kornheisers and Costanza aren't from /sp/.
A lot of the people you see posting "/pol/ shit" don't actually go to /pol/. Some are actively pretending for whatever reason, others just picked up some of the memes wherever.

I miss when we could have fun with /v/

It still doesn't make sense when I see /pol/ bringing completely unrelated shit like Jews, JIDF and niggers into anime discussions that have no connection to it.

Suddenly every brown girl thread has /pol/fags spouting "race traitors/>liking niggers" and apparently just about anything I do makes me a good goy these days. And I can't go a day without seeing some variation of the merchant image. It's getting really annoying.

LS was more fun, dipshit.

politics is a very popular subject,
so a lot of people go there

Plus they make a lot of OC
>>
There's definitely more manga threads now than back than.
>>
>>90569898
We worked hard on the wiki with /a/'s quality in mind.

Also I blame the 4chan cup for bringing boards closer together.

It pains me to say this but fuck Germanbro.

>>
>>90569990
I occasionally visit it, I like nazis
>>
>>90569864

/v/'s obsession with reddit and tumblr killed /v/. All /pol/ does is play into that fact and try to infect other boards with the same mentality regardless of how relevant it actually is.

How would you know /v/ shitposting if you haven't experienced it first-hand?
They also don't hate Japanese games.

To be honest, the only place I see either group are sales threads. I'm sure both of them are probably shitting up Free threads but I genuinely cannot bring myself to give even the smallest of fucks about Free. I haven't entered a thread for it since a couple of days after the announcement and I don't plan to.

/v/ does ruin shit. Ever since Watamote started airing I cant go on /a/ sundays, mondays and tuesdays because of all the faggotry that goes on. Still not ass bad as the Chuu2 problem a year ago.

/pol/ became the new /b/ after /b/ became Social Activist Central.

Also 2012 and 2013 had too many /pol/ events and /pol/ ended up redpilling /b/ and gaining all these new board inhabitants.

Reddit constantly mentioning /pol/ doesn't help either.

Reddit even stole Ron Paul from reddit.
>>
>>90570167
Watamote threads are being actively trolled just like Love Lab threads. There's some /v/ermin but they're not the majority of the problem by a long shot.

/v/ getting too popular was what killed /v/.

Remember this? This was the true destruction. It got so big, it went everywhere. That reddit came here for the content to bring it back for upvotes.

They just ended up staying.

The great DNS blockade was the best time in 4chan history after 2004-2006.

The reasoning is entirely simple, and just as you stated: slow 4chan is the best 4chan.
