>Anime stores
These exist outside of Japan? Probability says that there's probably some guy who opened a shop here in NYC because "I WANT TO BE A SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE IN THE BIG CITY" but I can't imagine there being a dedicated shop. I remember I saw like half of an aisle in Best Buy dedicated to anime and it's probably still there but anything outside of that? Sounds gay and like it would collapse in a year or less.
>>
Eh, its just a shitty comic book / geek shop that also sells manga/anime.

I had a look though and 90% of the anime is just Naruto or Bleach level stuff and a few movies, its pretty shitty.
The manga section is okay I guess, I picked up a few volumes of Spice and Wolf for a few quid each, and I got the Azumanga Daioh omnibus for a fiver, I've also seen Haganai and Oreimo on the shelves, probably more stuff if I spent the time to look in detail.

Its like 2 doors away from where I work as well so I go in once every month or two just to see if they've got any decent deals on anything.
>>
There was only one local anime store in my area. They rarely ever stocked anything imported, only US licensed releases, and when they did import something, it was absurdly overpriced, like the time they had Slayers Royal selling for $250. The place opened at 1 p.m. and closed at 4 p.m., and the clerks and owner spent all day talking about EVA.
Surprise, surprise, the place went under within half a year.

Just buy figures if you want to support the industry, they're still licensed but at least you're getting something of actual value instead of a blu-ray you could just download.
Same with unscanned doujinshi, unscanned manga, light novels.

If the industry isn't selling something that is actually valuable to you, why do you even want to give them your money? It makes no sense. It's like saying
"yes, please feed us more shit, we will gladly lick our fingers clean of it for your sake, nippon-san."
>>

>>
>>83658009

>>

They'd make more money and benefit directly if you imported. If you're so keen on supporting the industry, why don't you actually support it?
Your sales don't show up on their charts, it doesn't help them to decide what's made next or factor into a decision on a sequel and once again, even if it sold 500,000 units overseas, they would see only the amount it costs to license it.

It isn't supporting the industry, it's fucking weeb swag. Call it what it is.

Ignore the random chick.

If I'm honest. It's utter shit. I go maybe once every couple months. Everything is bootleg. I can't even buy legit box sets. (I have yet to find a place in the GTA, but I'm also not looking very hard.)

The place has two redeeming features, this one specific shop has these posters that are all the same size that are printed on nice paper and are dirt cheap.(But it's all entry level shit/old shit so it's hard to find anything decent. For example you'll never find posters for currently airing anime.) On top of that, Walmart near me sells frames the same size for dirt cheap as well.

The other thing is the large amounts of legit gunpla to buy. I'm not into it as much as I used to but they're on par with prices online just without shipping.

Any anons know of better places in Toronto?
>>
Everyone who makes the argument that buying from the people who bought the license don't support the industry are making a huge assumption. They are assuming that the people buying the license are doing so for a flat fee.

What you fail to realize is that it is entirely possible, and in fact very likely, that built into an agreement is the condition that they will receive a portion of the sales made.

This is probably the case because it's difficult to properly value the cost of intellectual property, and by shifting the cost on a per sale basis it allows for less risk for both parties.
>>
My local place is pretty nice. I've scored some good deals on older figures I would have never bought otherwise due to price issues. Not bootlegs either I think they just couldn't sell them for their actual value. Also a good place to grab various anime goods that would otherwise be impossible to find for a reasonable price after a short while, like the AT field umbrella.

Only bad thing they do is markup Touhou stuff a shitload and I still don't understand that since it seems like EVERYONE that sells shit at cons etc does so.

The idea that allowing anybody to know you enjoy or have seen anime will lead to your social ruin and cause you to have only Naruto-headband wearing spergs as friends is pretty ridiculous. It's really not that weird of a hobby, and casually showing your powerlevel when appropriate and in the right company/context isn't going to hurt you.

You can buy single seasons online for less. Of course some stuff is more expensive than others, but every time I've gone there, I could have bought the same thing online for much, much cheaper.

For example, Freezing was $70. I know that's still a fraction of what the Japs pay, but if I can get anime for cheap here, and a store is selling for way more than it should, high prices in Japan doesn't make it any less retarded.

> the people buying the license are doing so for a flat fee.

But it is the case for most companies. Here in europe, distributors generally acquire a licence for 2500 to 10000€. Then they add subs and dubs I don't need and make everything they can to have the shittiest image quality before burning their stuff on DVD/BD.

So I prefer to download raws and buy anime goods from amiami, plamoya, etc. I buy like 1200€ worth of anime goods every year, and by doing so probably support the industry more than your localized crap buying ass ever will.

When I went to University in Dallas, there was a pretty good shop close buy that I went to. Figs were over-priced as fuck, but sometimes they had ones that were fairly cheap, only around $5 more than AmiAmi once you factored in shipping.

Based Kinokuniya
>>
I had a place called like 'jcorner' or something way back in the day. It sold manga, anime, paraphernalia, clothing, and some other unrelated Japanese stuff. I actually considered working there at some point because I was just outa highschool, needed a job bad, and didn't want to work fast food. However I ended up doing construction and taking classes at night.

Unfortunately it closed after about 2 years after opening. Not only was the store surprisingly big for selling niche merchandise but the customers were awful. Kids would come in and break stuff all the time, then get away with it. Even worse they would read manga on the floor and when the store owner told them to buy or get out they pulled "thats not very polite to customers" and then make it very difficult for him. They would steal small things all the time too like Yugioh cards and fake shurikans.
>>

just make sure to plan out where you want to go if you're primary aim is deal hunting. Although it's japan, some places are still price hiked.

also bear in mind that the longer you stay, the more expensive it gets. Transport, food, boarding, and other daily necessities can get pricey near some of the major anime goods hotspots, and expenses can easily reverse whatever money you might have saved on the goods.

It isn't about being depressed about personal choices. It's the simple fact that anime has a bad reputation in the west. Just look at how boards outside of /a/ and /jp/ see anything japanese:

>hurrr cartoon porn for pedophiles moeshit for faggots

Getting a bad label for yourself around school/work is going to make life hard for you just because others don't understand or like your hobby. It should also be noted that the idiots that constantly run their mouths about how great anime is are half the reason the hobby has a bad reputation. Even Japanese otaku know to keep their hobby to themselves outside of certain situations and gatherings.
>>
>>83672951

should also add, you need to think about how you plan on getting that stuff back too. Check in luggage and mailing items back can also obliterate savings. Especially if you plan to keep everything inside their boxes

Bullshit.

I don't care, which is even more reason not to talk about anime with someone that doesn't care about it either. There are also some fairly serious labels that can come with being an anime fan. Your career is pretty much dead in the water once people think you are some sort of sexual deviant or pedophile or something else some asshole is likely to blow out of proportion.

it's only bad if you're personally a weird person. If you're not weird about it, then people won't give two shits. If people are treating you differently because you like anime, then it's because you - as an individual - are representing anime inappropriately.

>>
>>83675397
it's only contradictory if you yourself are a weird person. And being weird isn't being normal. If something is "weird" then it is abnormal - so of course, being "weird" is not being "normal." Thus, if you were normal, you wouldn't be considered weird. Whether or not you choose to stop it, is a personal preference. If you are unable to properly conduct yourself around others or if you are concerned that others may react negatively around you - then yes, adjusting your behavior or properly explaining your interests to them may be something to consider. Either action will convert what is perceived as abnormal to normal.

are you a weird person anon? Do people behave cautiously around you? if so, then I think there's a much more serious concern at hand here than the perceptions associated with anime.

Personally, I believe you may be projecting. In which case, you're being weird. This is probably why people think poorly of you and the activities that you indulge in.
>>
>>83676111
>Manhattan

I used to go to Kinokuniya but the last time I went it was gone? Either that or I was at the wrong place. What are some other places around there?
>>
>>83675717
that's actually the exact opposite. I'm saying that you can and should be able to talk about anime and manga to normalfags. It's cartoons and comics. There's nothing deviant about that. What would be deviant however, would be if you were actually indulging in it inappropriately. In which case, you would get the same reaction regardless if your interests were in anime or not.

ie if you were reading Kodomo no Jikan because you enjoyed watching child rin suck dick and told that to the average person, well, you would probably get an adverse response. Not because it is anime, but because of the context. You would get the same adverse reaction if you replaced Kodomo No Jikan with... I dunno, a Disney film or those teenager disney shows.

Now if you were talking about anime because the story itself was interesting, like I dunno, the camaraderie or the romantic elements. Stuff like that, well, normalfags won't give two shits, since the same conversations occur with all other forms of media: literature, film, day time tv, etc.

Bear in mind though, that if the person doesn't watch anime, then it would be like conveying an episode of House or Daily housewive's to someone who hasn't ever watched it. It's the same thing. They prob won't have much interest in it, and you will need to properly convey the context to them so that they can first understand then secondly appreciate.

it's not that I immediately went to lolicon. It was actually moreso a struggle.

I was running my head ragged to find something in anime or manga that I've experienced normalfags having an adverse reaction to and there's not much that shocks people these days, besides lolicon.

I suppose if you are a male and brought up animated cute girls doing cute things, then that would probably get an adverse response in general as well, since normalfags appreciate the 3DPD.

just like how people think 3DPD, you probably get people who also thing 2DPD.

in any cause appreciating cute girls doing cute things in anime, would probably be akin to enjoying cute girls doing cute things in Disney films. Which isn't really considered all that strange until the age difference starts coming into play. In which it would be the same response as 30 year olds courting 20 year olds and the like. Not necessarily a strange thing, but perhaps a bit inappropriate if you conduct yourself about it inappropriately.

but yeah, I guess if you were to run up to a normalfag and start talking about how much you enjoy watching cute anime girls doing cute anime things, it would probably be the same as if you ran up to a normalfag and started telling them how much you enjoy watching Wendy from peter pan do cute things as well. You can do it, but you would probably need to lay down some appropriate ground first.

Central Florida here. Animenation used to have a physical store you could visit, though it was tiny as fuck. However, once in a blue moon they'd have a special 'warehouse sale' where you'd get to assault their warehouse for unusual goods.

Georgia, United States

Tomato Japanese Grocery (Doraville and Smyrna)
-The Doraville store looks like a hole in the wall, but they have anime for rent, Japanese magazines, very few manga. They mostly sell Japanese goods though (food, toothbrushes, razors, sake, etc.) I've never been to the one in smyrna.

PikaPika - Discover Mills in Lawrenceville - most stuff is of three categories: bootlegs from China, legitimate Japanese goods that were made specifically for Korean consumption (before I shopped here I had no idea that there were Korean and Japanese versions of the same thing), authentic Japanese goods. Customer should be wary.

Forgot the name of the store, but it's also in Discover Mills. Everything there is either a bootleg or a cheaper Korean version of a Japanese good. Japanese cds and dvds are definite bootlegs.

There used to be a bookstore in Doraville next to Super H mart but they unfortunately closed down. It looked very nice.
