Naruto is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and DARKNESS. The normal anon can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

The chuunin exams were OK and the way they led into the Invasion arc was nicely done.

Really Naruto started to go down the shitter once Itachi and the rest of Akatsuki were introduced. It fucked up the power balance and sense of progression entirely and started the trend towards power-levels, ridiculous asspulls and asking the audience to suspend their disbelief a little too much even for a shounen manga.

Some of this stuff wouldn't have been so bad if Naruto didn't have (or used to have) a surprisingly strict and detailed set of rules for how it's world and the combat worked. When these things get broken or stretched it's much more noticeable and inexcusable. Compare this to a series like One Piece that's much more flexible with its system and the author can say a character's legs catch fire when he kicks because of the BURNING PASSION within his heart or whatever.

The rescue Sasuke arc and all of part 2 are pretty shit all round.

The first part honestly isn't that bad, Sasuke is still a retard but it felt like Kishimoto actually knew what he was doing.

After the time skip however, it's just shit.

I always thought that the Naruto vs Sasuke fight at the Valley of the End was amazing, but looking back on it, I'd have to say that's when the series started to take a nosedive.

Instead of being all about clever tactics, and tense stand-offs with people trading jutsu like a high stakes game of rock-paper-scissors, it turned into people trading powerups.

Actually, I guess the Chouji vs Jiroubou (Hot fatty on fatty action) did it first. Anyway, my point is that instead of awesome, well scripted fight scenes like Neji vs Spiderman, it's been just an endless series of games of chicken, where the first person to pull out their ultimate form/technique loses.

The Sasuke Retrieval arc displayed that Naruto was actually something of a tactical genius (well, maybe a savant). Ever since Shipuuden started it's just been 'Oh noes, mah rasengan didn't work! I'LL USE A BIGGER RASENGAN.'

But my main point is when you introduce a lot of characters you hit what I like to call either the Bleach effect of the Naruto effect.

The Bleach Effect is when you have so many characters but a plot that needs to progress, so they all get their time in the spotlight, but that spotlight is only on for two seconds.

The Naruto Effect is where you make interesting characters, who are interesting for the time they are introduced, but ultimately they need to be shelved because you need to make room for your plot.

Of course the third solution is the good writing effect, but that's rare.

I would say it was after Zabuza died, but the ultimate point was when Naruto gained everyone's acceptance. At this point I felt Naruto no longer had a true conflict in his aspiration to be a Hokage. All of that conflict was replaced with Naruto running after Sasuke, which meant...no real conflict for Naruto to grow as a character. Sasuke otoh does have all of the conflict that Naruto has been lacking since.

Kishimoto should have killed off Naruto and renamed it Sasuke.
