To grossly simplify it, it's a very clunky show, which kept it from being a huge deal, and it isn't a cute girls and explosions show, which kept it from selling well

Too much suffering.

Takes a cour and a half for the plot to get going and when it finally does, it's crammed into as few episodes as possible, with little explanation or resolution.

It was really good once it got going, but I only watched it up until that point out of obligation since I had already invested the time to watch the summer camp arc.

The violence in SSY was pretty visceral. There are series with more gore that are much more explicit, but the violence is usually so exaggerated and cartoonish that it really has no impact. I think violence is SSY has more impact both in characters and viewers.

I enjoyed the Shun Aonuma as karma monster episodes the most. All the mystery and questions surrounding the world, the village and the past captured my interest.

However, all the parts about the human pigs were rather boring / mediocore and in my opinion a huge waste of all the potential this show had. I still give it a 7.5/10 but damn it could have been a 10/10.

I bought Madoka, on the other hand. But I don't buy adaptations to begin with.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I did almost drop it because of the gay shit. Not because of Shun's and Satorou's graphic tongue kissing, but because we didn't get to see an graphic tongue kissing between Maria and Saki.

I've read everything that's translated so far and the anime seems to be a pretty decent adaptation. There are some interesting details only in the book, though. Of course, it's only up to around episode 5 of anime, and I have a feeling any major changes or things that were left out were from later.

Personally, I just think the pacing flat-out sucked. This is coming from someone who earnestly enjoyed slow anime like Texhnolyze.

It's just that some episodes, especially the snow arc, just fucking DRAGGED, and the main issue was that the majority of that shit literally Saki and what's-his-name traveling. The camping arc also suffered the same.

There was also shittons of QUALITY and certain episodes (like episode 10) had shitty cinematography. They also didn't NEED to devote a whole episode to the gay stuff. I didn't have issue with it being part of the world, I just didn't think it needed to be an episode and a half to explain it.

The thing where they had Saki resenting what's-his-face for no reason and making up immediate was also retarded.

And that is what counts. I think Saki learning about the Queerrats origins would have been a better scene if they just devoted more time to it. But there was so much they had to make an epilogue about, that it just felt like a formality. All in all it would have greatly improved the anime had they devoted a 26th episode to the epilogue, or maybe cut back on the snow hike scenes to make time for it.

Pretty much this. The writers clearly didn't know what and when to cut and so we got long scenes of faggotry where nothing happened.

This is a 2cour anime and they had to rush the last quarter of it because they spent a good chunk of the rest of it dicking around and not advancing the plot quick enough or in some episodes (2, 8, parts of the snow and camping arcs) not at all.
