In the beginning the show could have gone a multitude of fascinating directions with the plot, but they instead which went with SOL, which isn't necessarily a bad thing since even if the show was an SOL it could have really done something with its story, setting and characters that would have led to a great story. Instead they wasted all of that potential and added excessive fanservice to add insult to injury. I was hoping that this would have been the next great SOL since Haibane Renmei but it seems that it will be another lackluster title that squandered its potential.

No, I am overjoyed. It has become the light hearted, happy, discovery experience that I hoped it would do after seeing its promo art.

Also, its very well character driven, which I also like. Seeing the subtle changes in Ledo as the episodes go by is great. From how he reacts to new things to his increasingly better attempts at communication with the natives and him gradually learning to take it easy are all extremely endearing and handled in a decent way.

Amy, Pinion and Bellows are all lovely people aswell that make Ledo's learning experiences great to watch and they all seem to have genuine chemistry together.

So, even if it has become "slice of life" and "fanservice", there is nothing stopping the two above aspects from being handled extremely well and being good. The art, music, character designs and setting all being vivid, dynamic and pleasing to the eyes and ears also really helps.

He was so dismissive of it in episode 1 when Chamber told him that he had reproduction rights if he makes it back to Avalon. We can now see that thats because he literally does not have and lust/desire because of being in cryo-sleep induced training in a completely sterile environment, devoid of individuality, emotions or personal desires.

This is the first moment that he has come of of his shell as far as to start recognising things as sexual. His reaction when he asked Amy to dance showed that he was very curious of it, and his reaction when he realised he was touching her hammered the fact home that he has now developed some kind of self aware lust.

I like Ledo and how he's slowly becoming less of a robot and more of a human during his stay on Gargantia, but they're going a bit overboard on the fanservice. Saya and Melty especially only seem to be around for weebs to have their DELICIOUS FLAT CHEST and titty monster. They literally haven't done anything.

I'm interested to see how Ledo's growth will conflict with his people once he inevitably comes back in contact with the Alliance, but stuff better start happening or I'm going to have to drop this.

Now Ledo (and maybe the audience, too) has a stronger connection and relationship with Gargantia, and if anything happens to the fleet it will affect him with shoehorning anything.

Regarding your views about the initial space opera setting, I feel much of my counterargument can be summed up in your own words:

A pretty accurate analogy I'd say... And if I wanted to watch Macross, I'd watch Macross. But I don't, really. I've never been exceedingly taken by the Macross flavor of space opera--not because of the concept of nomadic human megafleets warring with menacing aliens, but because of how Japan treats it stylistically and technically. It's soft and fantastical, rather than dark and gritty. From what we did see of Ledo's previous life (and continue to see in the form of Chamber), I'm not confident that Butcher and Co. would've had the chops to do it justice.

In other words, I'm very happy to instead be watching Ledo doing Gargantian things. For the rest, get back to me when Sunrise announces Banner of the Stars IV.
