Message to people taking Japanese in the fall semester since mods deleted advice thread:

Most autismal weebs will drop out after Japanese II. It's one of those universal laws that nobody can explain.

Most people pretend to be normalfags that "just happened to fall into the class by mistake" or they will pretend that they have a desire to be a professional jap/english translator for the government (doesn't exist lol.)

The key to finding acceptable 3D friendos in such classes is to find people who are unashamed of their power levels yet self-aware enough to know that they need to hide them. The problem is that most self-aware weeaboos tend to either commit Drew Carey or sink into their autism and live in their parents' basements forevermore. I don't know about that last point... I became friends with two of the Japanese TAs from my beginner classes. It's funny when we go out and they get drunk and start waxing philosophic on the most bizarre shit.

But yeah, JPN 101 was the pits. The lecture hall was packed wall to wall with people on the first day. About a third dropped out by midterm. Then JPN 102 and 103 rolled around and classes got smaller and smaller. Day one of 103, there were only 15 of us. Only 10 made it through.

I'm taking 301 in the fall, and so far only 6 others besides myself have registered. The 350 classes (high advanced, i.e., for those with near-native fluency) are always on the verge of being cancelled because so few people progress far enough to register.

I suppose most classes with ever higher tiers are like this, but the attrition rate of the Japanese program compared to the Spanish and German programs is astonishing. I think only the Arabic and Russian programs do worse.

If you don't have problems learning the kanji via words or you don't plan on studying writing then you don't need to study kanji elsewhere.

If you focus on the word then you can use the sentence for context, either as a clue or for clarifying how the word is actually used. It's much faster to do than testing yourself on the whole sentence.

If you test yourself on the whole sentence then you are not only testing yourself on individual words but also on grammar.

I would say finish a beginner course such as Genki I+II, and then try it. Don't spend time trying to memorize or perfect anything, just read through it all. Then when you are reading you can think "Oh, this looks familiar" and you'll know what to look up in the book, if you don't already remember it.

I had a really hard time with Pokemon, no furigana and tiny kanji made it a pain to look them up. Furigana just makes things so much easier.

So I've got a question about the Anki Core 2k decks.

Along with making my own deck from shit I see around I'd really like to get another deck to make some more solid and regimented progress.

Looking on the Anki website there are 11 or so different decks listed in as Step 01, Step 02, and so on.

It might be better to do JLPT decks instead, I think you will get more useful words that way. Core2k has quite a few business/financial words. When I start using Anki again, I'm doing JLPT order.

I learned a new word.

Question: According to Genki, if I want to use two adjectives in one sentence to say something like "You are fat and ugly," I can say 「あなたは太くて見苦しいです。」 and if I want to say "You are fat and not ugly" I can say 「あなたは太くて見苦しくありません。」 How do I say "You are not fat and ugly" without changing the order of the adjectives?

I am so fucked right now as I try to begin learning kanji. I am struggling to figure out when to use on-yomi and kun-yomi when reading a word. Anyone have tips to clarify this?

There are a lot of exceptions to kunyomi only being used byself and onyomi being used only in other kanji. Native Japanese words are going to be read with kunyomi a lot of the time and borrowed words will usually always be read with the onyomi. The first 10 days are read with kunyomi.

Most of the time it'll be on'yomi, but it's not that rare to see words like that use either readings that aren't usually listed (今日, 昨日) or kun'yomi (書留, 手袋). Just assume it's on'yomi while keeping in mind that's not always the case.

Honestly, images are a crutch anyway. Most of the time you won't remember the meaning of the word, but the meaning of the picture. I also quit using audio just because I got sick of listening to the same sentences over and over.

No need for namasenseis kana lessons. You can write 'em on your own if you want for practice, but it literally takes like 3 hours with these to learn all the kana. You might wanna read through them a couple times. Hiragana a few times over until you know 'em then move on over to Katakana and do the same thing.

I would say 気持ち is strictly emotional, and 感じる can be used for both emotions and other stuff. Just look it up in a japanese dictionary.
