Notice how the height of the endish grammar for Chinese doesn't reach half of the starting grammar for Japanese? A lot of old and "deprecated" Japanese grammar rules are still present in Japanese in set expressions, and also (only generally speaking) in a lot of forms that are only used in formal literature. Ok after a few days of experimenting i understand that there is just no way i am gonna learn kanji sitting in font of the PC.

There are just too much fucking distractions. I am going with the kanji damage but its fucking impossible.

What should i do? Should i just write all the kanji down and make my own physical deck or something?

I get the feeling that I'm fucking myself up by learning the on yomi and not the kun yomi. I'm only maybe 300 kanji in, I can still start all over...

I'd personally recommend learning kun over on if you're only choosing one. Kunyomi is learning real words that you can use, onyomi just assists you to guess if you don't know a word and isn't consistent enough to justify learning in many instances.

I used kanjidamage and learned Kunyomi. If you come across a word with no kun or jukugo, go to jisho.org and type the character between two *, it'll list all the words it's used in. Add any words that are marked common and possibly some others if you think they'll be useful.

I mean as long as you're not learning incorrect information it doesn't really matter. Just do whatever works best for you. It's more important to enjoy what you're doing than to race through it, but that's not to say you shouldn't push yourself.

If you want another opinion, I personally study kanji so I can recognize them better when I study vocab. KD's radical order is pretty handy for remembering them and each one gives me a few new words I can add to my vocab. The readings are secondary before studying the actual words.

Okay, i could use some help here, i've been trying to start learning but i can't seem to understand what the heck am i supposed to do.

So far, i'm only reading Tae Kim and following these threads, but all i do in them is remember the kanji, the meaning and the reading in kana. (Which i suppose are the main Kunyomi and Onyomi, which i only grasp the meaning) How do you even learn kanjis in context? I've tried clicking "Words containing" and "Sentences" in the Jisho links, but the overwhelming amount of examples just confuses me. I mean, all i'm doing is memorizing, so that must mean that i'm missing something important..

You could say i'm getting started at both. I was confused with what deck choose at first in Anki, and i ended up downloading "Daily Japanese" and "Core 2k/6k Optimized Vocabulary", if i remember correctly.

There's a lot of personal preference, this may not be the answer you want to hear, but really, the only way you'll know which methods are both effective and enjoyable to you is to try them for yourself.

One way to go about doing this is to try learning from vocab without studying kanji individually, if you find you're having with the characters, either recognizing or writing/visualizing(depending on what your goals are) then give individual kanji study a shot. As was said before, as long as you're not learning incorrect information, it doesn't really matter. All the different methods are just means to an end.

Depends on what you want out of it. The CoreXK decks are pretty popular in these threads, JLPT NX decks are good if you just want general vocab, if you want to learn in radical order you could use a KD deck.

But regardless of which decks you end up using, it's a good idea to have a custom deck that you add words you come across in your reading, this is a good way to help you read things your interested in more quickly.

If you're planning on using an emulator, I found that wind waker didn't run on dolphin. Twilight princess is really good though, has the option to toggle furigana in the options as well. It was pretty difficult to find an iso of it though.

I prioritized kun and often learned on without trying too hard, not on all of them only on the ones that stuck without any effort. It doesn't really matter if you're studying vocab too, which you should be. I personally chose to prioritize kun because it gave me legitimate words. I sort of know on readings based upon how common a reading is for a certain kanji from the jukugo I know.

tfw you discover that certain radicals and radical groups carry the same reading across all kanji they're contained in.

For instance, 義 'makes' all of 義　儀　犠　礒　議, among other obscure kanji all be ギ. Maybe this was obvious, but I hadn't come across any mention of such phonetic radicals anywhere.

In any case, all in all, these phonetic radicals maybe reduce the number of distinct readings to memorize by 50. Not amazing, but still useful.

I learned with the JLPT decks, you can either modify the deck so that it shows the kana along with the kanji on the front or you can accept that you don't really know the kanji that well but recognize it kind of. I personally chose to just accept that I didn't know some of the characters and try to remember by shape and fill in the blanks later with my kanji study, that's not necessarily the best way to do it though. I wasn't able to get much out of the deck until I was a around 200-300 kanji in on Kanjidamage. But that's more likely a personal problem than anything else.

Well it has furigana so the kanji shouldn't be too much of an issue. I just found that it's easier to understand, so I guess that means it has easy grammar and vocab. You may need to stop to look up a few less common words but in general it shouldn't be too much of a challenge. I haven't actually read the entire series yet so it may become difficult in the later books.

I try to do 10 - 20 Kanji a day and about 25 vocabs in CorePlus. I prioritise the kun reading because it's easier for me if there's an actual meaning behind it. Maybe I'll make a seperate Jukugo deck with the on readings when I'm done.

Assuming Anki mobile works the same way as on the computer, settings are profile based. If your deck doesn't have it's own profile and uses "Default" for instance, there's a chance you have other decks with the same profile. A change to one will change all the decks under that profile. Make a new profile.

Is that your only vocab deck? If so, you've barely even started. Try reducing the number of new cards until you start getting them correct more often. You're better off starting low and then start increasing than starting too high and lowering. They'll just pile up if you do the latter, making it hard to not to get overwhelmed with cards you have to relearn.

For some reason, I keep reading 彼 as 私. I know the difference, but whenever I see 彼 my mind automatically registers it as 私, has anyone experienced similar problems?

Yeah, it's my only deck. It's the coreplus deck though. Reducing the number of new cards is probably a good idea at the moment, but I get concerned because there is 25000 cards in the deck. Maybe I'll just put on hold learning new cards and keep on studying the old ones until I get them right.

I had the same problem with 俺 and 僕 where I would read both as ぼく. Just make sure you catch yourself each time you make a mistake and you'll be fine after a while.
