I just started today.

1. How bad is my handwriting
2. How fast should I learn the hiragana and the katakana? 5 a day? 10 a day? all of them in one day?

If you can learn them within 3 months then you're doing fine. Of course it can take some longer so don't be afraid to slack behind.
>>
>>87924690
I dunno if this is considered slow, but it took about 6 hours spread out over the course of three days for me to learn all the kana.
>>
>>87924741
This is a troll, i learned kana in a week, if you take 3 months you're clinically retarded.
>>
>>87924690

Everyone's handwriting sucks, most of all the Japanese's. If your handwriting looks good, it just means you take way too long to write.

A week or so for all kana should be enough, then start grammar and kanji. If you're not completely fluent in reading kana by that point, it will come naturally as you read moar.

You should be able to learn both the kana within 3 days. Maybe not completely memorised, but you should be able to read (badly) in kana.
Then start on the rest of the language.

Use fuckin' mnemonics yo.

It makes it SOOO easy to learn them. I uploaded these to dropbox for a friend the other day. Just got to realkana and test yourself when you look through them.

You can get the gist of all of them in like two hours.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qch89hlrmhknabv/FP3w9Rklcj

Some of these are so fucking retarded you can't help but learn them. And there are info pages on modifications that are really helpful too.
>>
>>87924741
What was that forum with people learning 5 kanji a week and thinking it was too fast?

Shit was the funniest thing I've seen in years.
>>
>>87924690
Honestly you should just move at your own pace unless you just need to learn quickly. The sooner you get through them though the sooner you can move on to bigger things.

>>
>>87924690
Do as you feel fit, but I would not spend more than a week on both hiragana and katakana. Don't expect to know them perfectly by the time you finish it, it takes practice. Video games, manga, anime, and Tae Kim's grammar guide will help you sharpen your kana skills. Tae Kim's guide is especially helpful because it teaches you grammar and, at the same time, gives you your kana practice

Today's reading exercise:

フクロウの染め物屋
From Hukumusume: http://hukumusume.com/douwa/amime/jap/j04_21.html
Audio reading: www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0CHyE0RHsA

(Part 1)
>>
>>87931072
before I started learning japanese I wasn't listening to the voices. Listening to the voices in whatever I watch is what made me realize I needed to go back and look at what I was hearing.
>>
>>87931201

Actually yes, you can skip Katakana, it is entirely unnecessary. Did you know in 1990 the Japanese government started phasing out Kanji with roumaji? Yup! In fact, the only people who know Kanji now are scholars on ancient pre-90's Japanese and neckbeard faggots like people in this thread! Now that you know that Kanji and Katakana are useless, I think you should know that you already wasted your time learning Hiragana, but it's okay, you now know more "ancient" Japanese than 98% of the Japanese population, isn't that neat?
>>
>>87937104

>>87937162
Good! All the better! Here is my 100% sure fire way to learn Japanese the fastest, it is much better if you start this method before you learned any of that useless Kanji/Katakunta/Hiragana dogshit! So here is how I have been improving both my ENGLISH and JAPANESE at the SAME TIME. It's really mindblowing that nobody thought of this before. So most people don't encourage Anime subbed, I agree, reading is MUCH too hard for the average person today. So I went to the drawing board, and came to a solution, what if we made JAPANESE ANIMATION with ENGLISH AUDIO, boom. You are learning both JAPANESE and ENGLISH while still enjoying everything to the fullest! None of that reading shit! We all know reading is for cockgobbling faggots. Now go, get some dubbed anime and learn some Japanese!

Hmm, interesting question. It's always annoying to explain this, but here I go.

I'm a native, meaning that I was born in Japan, grew up with only Japanese, and went to 1st grade, where I was pretty smart. I was advanced at my level in Japanese. I moved out after, but I speak 90% Japanese at home with my parents. Outside of that, I rarely got/get any Japanese practice.

Due to that, I can understand the *meaning* of most kanji, almost all the time when it is in context, but I can barely write them out of my memory. I also know barely any *on* of kanji (for example, the on of 東 is トウ).
I understood the meaning of everything except 俟 and 擽. 俟 is probably rarely used, and I've never seen くすぐる written with the kanji, ever. Even on Japanese sites.
I didn't know the on of any of them, even 抔.
