For some reason, kanji in my anki deck look like dogshit. For example, this >>89835543 one looks like pic related. Does anyone know how to fix it? I already trie to play with fonts and such, but it did not help
>>
>>89837978
What's wrong with it?
>>
>>89837135
You're literally looking where words, begin, and what the conjugations and particles are doing to the sentence. IME's enable you to to do this without needing to know the vocab, but aside from that, it's the same thing as reading yotsuba& or anything else for that matter in the grammar reinforcement department.
>>
>>89837978
Sounds like you're playing with the fonts the wrong way. Post a screenshot or a pastebin of the HTML/CSS of your cards.
>>
>>89838059
it is supposed to look like this >>89835543 . Look at 2 strokes on the right side

>>
>>89837978
Well, that's how it looks in my browser as well, including the jisho page.

Maybe computer characters vs. written characters like with e.g. 冷?
>>
>>89838330
Have you confirmed that you have "MS ゴシック" installed? It might not be, which would make it default to some other font.
>>
>>89838391
If you were using jisho you would know stroke order fonts are only good for stroke order.
>>
>>89838490
Is your computer a premade or did you build it yourself? Most premades come from China which would explain the screwed up kanji. If you want to fix it, you have to build your own.
>>
>>89838650
Actually yeah, but it's using the correct character sets. There are simply characters that look different in computer fonts than they look hand written.
No idea if this is such a case. It's not general use anyway. Although the word itself is certainly important.
>>
>>89837978
Look at this page: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%84%88

For me the Chinese section shows the character as shown in the picture above, and the kanji section shows the writing in your picture.
As >>89838326 pointed out the error is in the stroke order set to begin with.
>>
Thanks, everyone, I fixed that weird Kanji font. The root of the problem was that OSX did not have MS kanji font by default, so instead it used this weird shit. I just had to change the font to one of those OSX has and now it is fine

This is my first time in these threads but not my first experience with learning Japanese - I took a module at uni for fairly basic Japanese and I'd like to continue with it in my own time. The info in the OP seems amazing, I'm pumped to start working with it.

Starting out with kanjidamage, what's a good sort of pace in terms of kanji per day? I don't want to overload myself by doing too many, but I also want to learn as quick as possible.

Same guy who was asking about how many kanji is reasonable to do a day here. To the more dedicated learners in these threads, how long do you spend on this a day? I'm not starting from scratch, so I think this'll be my daily routine. I waste enough time as is so I'm sure I'd be able to find at least an hour a day. And at what time(s) of the day do you work with this?

Kanji: 20 a day
Vocab: 35 a day
Kana: Test self on all, every day (already sort of know)
Grammar: Work with Genki (a lot will just be revision)

>>89844487

Today's reading exercise:

小泉八雲秘稿画本「妖魔詩話」
http://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000042/files/2505_9345.html

(2/5)
>>
>>89844704
Eh, I learned Kanji through vocab, and picking out ones I didn't recognize and looking them up. It seems a lot more efficient.
>>
>>89844882

I do around 50 mins of anki a day, and at least 1 hour of reading. was doing 20 kanji a day until a week ago, where i lowered it to 10. 20 vocab(40 cards) a day.
I do it as soon as i can in the morning.
>>
>>89844911

Guy that made this image here. Let me explain .

First, look at this.
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~ax2s-kmtn/ref/jis2000-2004.html

The column under 旧規格 is basically forms of kanji that were made up by computer companies just because they felt like it (for the sake of uniformity with simplified jouyou) and are technically incorrect or otherwise off. The ones under 新規格 are based on the 康熙字典 which is largely considered to represent the "correct" 正字 form of all kanji in Japan.

tl;dr They're both fine but 愈 is more correct

What was everyone's preferred method to learning katakana and hiragana?

I started off with a, e, i, o, and u and learned the stroke order, wrote them enough to fill up a single page so far, and practiced on the realkana.com for at least 40 minutes. This is my first day.

It's not much I suppose but you have to start somewhere, right?

>>
>>89851574
It's not like it's at all uncommon or only used in that word.
>>
>>89851594
Well you said you spent 40 minutes on realkana, in 40minutes you should probably do 2-3 'sets'. As I said before, getting caught up on kana is a common way for beginners to waste a lot of time. By the time you can recognize the kana like 80% of the time it's time to start vocab/kanji+grammar.
>>
>>89851594
>>89851717
That's not to say that you should rush through it at a pace you're too uncomfortable with, but I think it'll be more efficient for you to do like 4 sets a day then spend a few days reviewing than to go slower on each individual set.
>>
>>89851717
Thanks for the advice, I'll spend less time on kana since it is pretty easy. Heading to vocab/kanji+grammar is pretty scarily overwhelming. A little at a time, I'll get through...

>>
>>89866774
You don't need to go back.
Just read stuff you like and make a new deck in anki for all the words you can't read/don't know.
>>
>>89866879
tbh making a custom anki deck was such a hassle
in fact it was the prime reason i slowly slided into quitting
when i finished KD
I started making my own deck with the ~500 jouyou kanji that KD missed and making a deck of 20 cards from scratch, making a mnemonic etc. was too time consuming.
(it's much harder if you do it plain kanji-meaning+reading)
>>
Forgive me, but I'm a little new to this. Is there any importance to the memorization of onyomi besides more than one jukugo containing it? Or is that the whole point?
>>
>>89867138
>(it's much harder if you do it plain kanji-meaning+reading)
That's how I've done it so far.
Haven't even touched any of the pre-made decks.
>>
>>89867204
Onyomi often is too irregular to justify learning it, there are some exceptions but overall you'll still have to learn all the compound words anyway. If you just guess the reading/meaning based on onyomi/what you think the kanji mean, you'll be wrong more than you'll be right.
Learning Kunyomi will give you legitimate words that you can use, so if the choice is between on or kun, go for kun.
>>
>>89867138
>tfw finishing those jouyou today
Fuck, I don't even have a face for this feeling.
Did take a long time to make the cards though.
>>
>>89867301
I see, thank you. So, would you suggest looking at compound words that can be formed with the particular kanji and then deciding weather or not to memorize the onyomi based on how many compound words actually make use of it?
>>
>>89867327
share 'em
>>
>>89867541
I-I'm too embarrassed. It's only kanji+meaning and common words.
>>
>>89867458
Yeah, if you're using something like kanjidamage it has a few of them listed. If you want to find a kanji's use go to jisho.org and search "*X*", where X is the kanji. That will list all uses of the character regardless of where it is in the word. If it's too much work, you can just learn by recognizing patterns in your other vocab studies.

So I'm just gonna suspend Core2k until I'm done with the Genki vocabulary.

Who the fuck thought putting words like legislation, administration and three different ways of saying management and organisation before words like car, dog and city would be a good idea?
>>
>>89869026
Why aren't you using the Core 2k/6k Optimized Japanese Vocabulary deck?
>>
>>89869107

Too much clutter for my tastes. If there's anything more than the word and its translation, I always start to remember the cards based on their layout rather than the word itself.
>>
Weebs.
>>
>>89869156
You can modify the card layout and put example sentences and voices to back side or leave them out.
>>
>>89869026
Are you sure you haven't set it for random card order?
I'm using Core2k, I've already got "car", "dog" and "city" there and haven't seen those terms you've mentioned.
>>89869156
> I always start to remember the cards based on their layout rather than the word itself
I was also afraid of that, that's why I moved images to the back side and made the sentence(in kanji) a hint field.
So on the front side I see either a word or a sentence in kana + audio, nothing more.
>>
>>89867720
>>89868036
I waffled for a while because it's a really shitty deck, but hopefully this can save others some time at the very least.

I just finished learning the hirigana and katakana and I am now moving on to the kanji.

I read through all of the information on kanjidamage and after actually going onto the kanji pages it has a hell of a lot of different information. Is there any option that is simpler than this? Is it teaching me more than I need to know? If not I guess I will try and make sense of it all but it is really overwhelming when the first kanji is surrounded by a couple of paragraphs.
>>
>>89871979
Just learn the kunyomi and jukugo that you can. You should also be using a vocab deck like JLPT or CoreXK to supplement. It's not that hard just give it some time and keep trying.
>>
>>89871979

The point of kanji study is character recognition as a supplement for vocabulary study.
Add the kunyomi and jukugo to your vocabulary deck and study them seperately.
>>
>>89871979
You don't have to learn kanji individually if you don't want to. It won't really help you in anyway and it takes longer. (Just my opinion)
Learn them trough vocab.

It's best to split the work.
Read Tea Kim or other grammar book since first day.
Start with simply kanji and their on reading.
Learn kun readings with okurigana (actual words) separately.
Depending on you, immediately or after a while, start learning jukugo as well.

Learning everything you see on KD's cards at once isn't too wise, focus on one task at the time, it's better to do four thing half an hour each than spend two hours trying to comprehend everything.
>>
>>89872187

all 3DS games are region locked.
