Complete newbie here, I decided that since I have PC access at work when I'm on break (and I'm frequently 1 hour early for my shifts) I'm going to put some of that spare time into learning Japanese.

I'm starting with the hiragana and it's hard but I'm starting to speed up. No real dramas yet, but I'd just like to thank OP (and anyone collaborating on it) for the useful references etc. and also the help I'm inevitably going to need once I start actually learning grammar.

Keep up the threads, I look forward to eventually reaching a level where I can participate in discussion, for now I'm just going to keep writing down characters and babbling syllables like an idiot.
>>

Install rikai and post the dumbest thing you can think of in Japanese regardless of if you know how to phrase it, you'll fit in just fine.

Heeey I've been doin' my Anki, and I like to double check certain words on Jisho since the definitions on Anki can be pretty limiting, but this one is kinda gettin' me.
On Anki it says that どう means "how, what" but when I look it up on Jisho, there's no signs of it meaning that anywhere?

This has me stumped. What does にぎにぎ mean in bubble 86? Jisho only has one result that comes up is "lively;merry" which is にぎにぎしい. Google translate says it is "grip technique" and rikai doesn't give any results.

Anons, I know we are masters of procrastination but try to do you reps early so that real life won't be able to screw up your plans.

and am beginning to realise this. Unfortunately, googling for simple light novels doesn't turn up much, either. It's just people recommending stuff they have watched anime of, from what I can see. I'm not going near Spice and Wolf. As much as I love it, the vocab would tear me a new one.

And the lists I can find of simple LNs are pitifully small.

Did anyone start their reading from the kana only stories? I guess you are supposed to struggle through them without knowing any of the words and just add them to your vocab in anki.
>>
>>89447611
Nisio's works are the only ones to be consistently placed on a different tier (and even then, there often pop up people who claim to have read some and find them not really difficult besides some kanji puns and whatnot). What I'm getting at is that you probably don't need to worry much about difficulty. Just pick something that sounds fun.

Here, have something I googled my way to recently:
http://blog.livedoor.jp/livesinden/archives/50596736.html

Some guy wrote paragraph-long descriptions for tons of LNs and ranked them by how much he liked them. See if you agree with his taste and just pick anything that sounds good. Feel free to google "ラノベ おすすめ" or something similar for different opinions.
>>
>>89448674

I've found that I'm having a harder time remembering kanji without writing them so I put together an anki deck for that purpose. going through my decks and actually studying at that point isn't hard for me and I generally like it, but when it comes time to add new cards I feel stuck and generally it's my least favorite part. Does anyone else have this problem?
>>

It happened to me, but there is no solution to it. When you get into the routine of adding new cards, this feeling will get suppressed. For me, it faded away completely only when I finished my kanji deck completely. I still add kanji there, but very rarely (maybe 1-2 per week) because I am sitting at 2300+ kanji now and I would rather spend this time on vocab

>finish it early
what? I'm not just studying kanji by itself, the kanji deck is there so I write it down when it pops up. I only did that because I was having trouble distinguishing kanji in my vocab deck. The real problem I'm having now is that adding cards in general feels like a grueling process.
>>
>>89450423
well as I said, it's not just for my kanji deck. adding cards for anything feels so painstaking.
>>
So, my deck gave me the following sentence and translation:

彼女は青い目をしています
She has blue eyes.

Does this make sense? I mean, shouldn't it be 彼女の目は青い or 彼女は青い目を持っています? I get the feeling that する shouldn't be used like this.
>>
>>89450534
>>89450479
Then don't make adding new cards a separate process. My Anki is set up on mixed review, meaning that it will insert new cards in-between reviews, so I am not anxious about new cards at all since I see it just as a part of reviewing
>>
>>89450980
I'm not quite understanding you here. I add new cards to my vocab deck as I see them in my study. If I don't add them then It wont have anything to draw from. If you are referring to a pre-made deck then I'm not sure what deck would really help me there. I dropped core2k as it was showing conjugations of words that I didn't understand before I even knew what the word was.
>>
>>89450943
する is used for certain features, such as 顔をする or 味がする.
>>
>>89451310

That's just example sentences, you don't have to worry about being able to read them.
>>
>>89451310
Ah, I see, you are correct, I was using a pre-made deck. Can you show me an example of the trouble you are talking about? I am using core2k/6k deck that is pretty amazing. I see, it is your deck's fault because it does not show the word by itself. Mine shows the word and the sentence on the front (though I removed pictures because it kinda spoils). I think I know your deck and I think I know how to fix it. For comparison, here is how mine looks
>>
>>89452000
I feel that it takes too long and it's the part I hate most about studying. I still do it but I find myself procrastinating and not doing it as often as I need to by a long shot.
>>
>>89452111
Adding words to your deck is a great time to review the word itself and take the time to look it up in a dictionary. I find it's far more beneficial than the wholesale grinding of premade decks many people do in this thread.
>>
>>89452111

Try storing all of the words in a text file as you do your reps, then at the and make all of the cards at once.
>>
Does anyone have an image featuring all the jouyou kanji (preferably sorted by grade)? (Not that one with the face in it.) I don't see it in the links of OP's post.

>>89452111
So you add all cards manually one by one? Why not use Rikaichan/sama and Anki import? My deck's has like 7000 words that I've added by letting Rikaichan and Anki take care of pretty much everything for me.

>I don't quite follow. "doing my reps" is studying from my deck, or are you saying using a different deck and then taking the words from there.

It's studying from your deck. From what I understand you're being troubled because you have to stop while studying it to make new cards. If you leave all of that work for the end it fixes your problem right?

I'm not talking about the auto-import feature Rikaisama has. I've heard some people here use it, but I'm talking about the feature Rikaichan and Rikaisama have that allows you to save an entry to a text file by simply pressing a button. After you've done that, you can have Anki process the whole text file automatically for you and produce notes.
