Three volumes of Yotsuba down, seven more to go. Loving it.

So, how have you guys been studying Japanese lately? I've been trying to read ヨスガノソラ but I've had to look up words in almost every sentence so it might be a bit out of my league.

This pretty much.

After that, Aiura if Russian Post doesn't take a year delivering it (should be on the way) and then Sora no Woto VN I guess. And grinding more words. Many, many more words.

Probably out of your league to finish it, but I think you can get a lot out of varying the difficulty on what you read.

tl;dr is in the previous threads, in short: December, dropped almost immediately, all February, dropped, half of may to finish KD, half of June and till now for the rest. Think of it what you will. Even Japanese born people have to look up words in VNs a lot. So don't feel discouraged because of it. Its probably will be a good experience for you.

Can someone translate this for me?
>ブラウンさんはそんなにしたくないんですね。
My translation: Mrs. Brown doesn't want to do it that much.

But that doesn't make much sense given the context sense it looks like Mrs. Brown in fact does love doing it. It is said from a 3rd persons perspective who is watching Mrs. Brown doing the activity.

そんなに = to that extent, that much
したくない = does not desire/want to do (something).

I tried posting this last thread but I was mostly ignored, so I'll try again.

I'd like to suggest a new link for the pastebin. It's a blog by a Japanese Japanese teacher. It's written in very simple Japanese and it casually talks about a lot of exceptions, particularities and curiosities of the language. I think it's great reading for anybody in any stage of learning Japanese.

It's nice I can just stay in my bed all day having fun and increasing my vocab.
>>
>>89184877
I would absolutely agree with you, but 2 things have gotten me stuck.
1. But isn't it wrong to use ~たい form when referring to people other than yourself? Usually you would use ~たがる form when expressing other peoples desires.

2. It doesn't really make sense with the context given. Mrs. Brown really loves doing what she is doing.

Would the sentence make more sense if I added dots in the sentence?
>ブラウンさんはそんなに。。。したくない。。。ですよね。
>>
>>89185664
I'm guessing you mean something like 家内
even if this is bait I'm trying to turn it into a valuable discussion
>>
>>89185789
I'm pretty sure I know what's going on. I didn't bother replying even though I pretty much knew what the deal is because then I would have to explain a lot more. If you give the last few sentences before that statement then I should be able to do it easily.
>>89185807
Impossible.
>>
>>89185789

Why would she say ね at the end if she was talking about herself? That doesn't make sense either. Also, I get a feeling you can use -たい when referring to other people too, but I'm not 100% positive on that.

Could it be that Brown wants to do it so much that the girl is taken aback and is asking "You don't really want to do it that bad, do you?"
>>
This is what the Japanese wiki says, quick translation.

In 1947, Faust (V.C. Faust) reported the existence of the phenomenon. It was reported to occur when a person extensively continues to observe something. The "Gestaltzerfall for written words" a subject of research by cognitive psychologists. For example, if the same kanji is observed for an extensive amount of time, the observer begins to recognize each part of the kanji individually rather than as a whole and becomes unable to remember what the kanji itself was. In recent years, possible relation to semantic saturation has been suggested, however, the exact cause of the phenomenon has yet to be conclusively found with many uncertain areas.

Sorry for the confusion. Its just that there is a picture for this particular scene. Here is how the dialogue goes. It is all the inner thoughts of one person who is watching Mrs. Brown.

>今日は、ブラウンさんのばん。
>おミゴトもだけど、林さんとのエッチも。
>。。。ほんとは、ブラウンさんはそんあに。。。したくない。。。んですよね。
You can ignore the line below if you want. Thought it might help.
>。。。だってさあ、ブラウンさん。。。ってばあんなにさ、

This situation is this. The speaker is watching Mrs. Brown engage in エッチ with Mr. Hayashi from across the room. She watches with jealousy while Mrs. Brown is in ecstasy.
>>
Are you supposed to abandon Anki at some point? I feel like I could be using that time doing something better.
>>
>>89186668
Did you just add those dots in?
> She watches with jealousy while Mrs. Brown is in ecstasy.

The really hard part is whether or not I should pay attention to the meaning, one of the readings, or the kanji itself. And considering that I want to READ something soon, I don't think that it was over soon. Unless I miss two days in a row, which never happens. Are there tips to remembering them better? Like saying the meaning or reading clearly?
>>
>>89188464
Make up mnemonics. Eventually you'll get into kanji-learning mode, and won't need it. I barely even look at the radicals nowadays.
>>
>>89188464
You should only be testing one thing per card anyway, many premade decks are flawed with information overload.
>>
>>89188254
I don't fucking know. I've been dealing with trinomial factoring and simplifying radicals for two days and I can't afford to fail a second test. Hence the downsizing on what I WANT to do this summer. I should be reading simple manga by now but I can't get through the first chapter in Yotsuba unless I fire up one of those crutch programs.

>>89188603
Some are harder to make up then others. I could just write them down ten more times again but I just don't have the time nowadays.

>>89188648
I only use one premade deck. The first Core2k deck. Which I'm doing a ways better even if some of the sentences have kanji and words I don't know just yet. I'm referring to the kanji deck I made (and am still making) myself. For the most part I'm going in the KanjiDamage order but I sparingly add other kanji from elsewhere.

Today's reading exercise:

こういう月評が欲しい
http://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000311/files/2833_8429.html

I mean, who gives you the fucking reading and asks you for the kanji. That's completely backwards. >>
>>89197606
The vast majority of people who attempt to learn Japanese won't ever come anywhere close, they don't know the difference or care.

Methods that let people make noises that can be understood in the language, essentially learning phrases, are extremely popular because you can "communicate" with almost no effort. It gives you the illusion that you're speaking the language, even if you don't understand a single word or piece of grammar in the phrases you use.

TL;DR: people are retarded
>>
>>89197792
>It gives you the illusion that you're speaking the language

>>
>>89198394
>>89198387
I know one of you is probably serious so I guess I'll bother saying this. You can read anything just by knowing a vague (and often wrong) meaning of the kanji.
>>

there exists an objectively superior method to learning japanese
>>
>>89198506
>You can read anything just by knowing a vague (and often wrong) meaning of the kanji.

That's tautological. You have to know the correct meaning of a kanji, or else you are reading it wrong, which means you're not reading it at all.
>>
>>89198507
>What's the difference betwen vocab and kanji?
Vocab are words, kanji make up words. Sometimes a word is a single kanji, most of the time it's not.

>Also the guide is just taking a fucking cop-out position, as everyone does in these threads
There were horrible shit storms, it was the worst experience of my life, it's best to just not think about it.

>there exists an objectively superior method to learning japanese
Potentially, but I doubt it exists in a usable form currently. As of now, the differences between people's styles of learning is enough to justify using different methodologies.
>>
>>89198394
Because you don't know the conjugation or the compounds.

Example : 上手 : じょうず : Skillful/Proficient/etc
Obviously this doesn't mean up hand.

Example 2: 死ぬ : 死なないで : 死んでいる
If you only learned the meaning you know that this has something to do with death. But you know understand the differences between them.

>>89198506

Knowing the meaning and the reading doesn't help anymore for this then just knowing the meaning.
>>
>>89198638
>Because you don't know the conjugation or the compounds.
So knowing the kun tells you that?
>>
>>89198974
Not that person, but if you deliberately avoid the pronunciations, you'll miss a lot of the language. You gain a lot of understanding, you can see how words relate together, idiomatic usage in certain instances.

You'll lose a lot more than you'll gain by cutting that corner.

Even though kanji often have 9999 readings when you look them up, this is misleading. 90% of words will use the two or three most common readings.
>>
>>89199230
>>89199363
The question is too vague. Does he mean until I can never study the kanji again? Or is he talking about kanji flash cards?

There's also personal preference involved, many people here don't learn stroke order but the Japanese do, at least for Jouyou. It really depends on what you want.
>>
>>89199499
It's not the readings, it's the fact every kanji seems to have about literally one dozen characteristics associated with it and nobody can agree what is needed and what isn't and if you ask you get troll answers like "lol nothing"
>>
>>89199533
That's honestly not a troll answer. This isn't a thread to teach you Japanese, this is a thread about self-study.

The best answer I can give you is to keep learning until you understand it, it's nuances, it's usage, etc.
>>
>>89199533
People don't give you straight answers because they're aren't straight answers.
>>
>>89199516
The answer implicitly means "How much information (mathematically / objectively defined) is associated with every kanji"

i.e.

>meaning
>stroke order
>kunyomi
>omyoni
>radical construction
>jukugo (derived)
>additional readings

i.e. there are at least 6 things per kanji you have to know to truely "know" a kanji.
>>
Note : doing anything less than this is absolutely unacceptable and will get you trolled, shitposted, and humiliated out of JDT, /a/, 4chan, the internet, and life as you kill yourself for being such a shitty, inferior, piece of shit untermesnch, because that's how the internet works. If you're not literally god, you should literally kill yourself.
>>
>>89199639
>How much information (mathematically / objectively defined) is associated with every kanji"

You can learn a hell of a lot by studying ancient Chinese and the etymology of these characters and their introduction into Japanese and even get an incredibly deep understand of it, but that's essentially unrealistic.
>>
>>89199533

Right, but IMO, studying those characteristics "top down" is a tremendous waste of time. Add words using each kanji as you come across them, and you'll notice patterns. Learning this way is much easier than trying to force all of that info into your brain.

This is one of the biggest benefits of Kanjidamage that I see ignored by so many people. It has a list of words it's used in and jukugo. The keyword at the top of the page is stupid, by understanding how the character is used you can actually understand it, it's often difficult if not impossible to accurately and concisely portray these ideas in another language, such is why the keywords are misleading.
