Unlike your typical illegal streaming sites, CR's 1080p is sometimes decent. (But also sometimes terrible, so that doesn't really say much.)

>people think the only way they can support the anime industry in the west by throwing money at some random distributors

>japanese people just watch everything on tv without paying extra

The only way to actually support the industry is to watch the raws on TV. If you pay for subs/dubs most of the money, if not all, will most likely go to the fansubs or US distributor.
I'm pretty sure 4kids for example doesn't give most of the cash to the creators of the animu.

But anyway, it's not a site you go to to discuss weeaboo things, you go there to watch them and that's it. Personally I use it as a last resort. Basically to me it's "I can't find subs anywhere else so fuck it I'll put up with ads just this once.com" I can count on one hand how many times that has happened, but it's nice to know it's there in a pinch.

So how does the industry make money anyway? What determines what shows get a new season?

Is it mostly views and ratings or Japanese BD sales?
>>
>>90332815
What show do they have that you can't find subbed somewhere else?
>>
I have a question. If Crunchyroll let you download, would you use the site?
>>
>>90332860
I believe it's sales.
>>
>>90332860
Merchandise is a huge part of it.
>>
>>90332860
Anime is used to push LN, merch (figures etc.), and manga sales, those that sell the most and make the most come back for another season. Anime originals are reaction based.
>>
>>90332865
Oh but they do anon. For an additional five dollars.
>>
>>90332852

>>
>>90332865

>>
>>90332852

That's like saying "No, I don't buy this game in this store, because it's so cheap, I'll go to a different store and buy it for a higher price. Everyone who does something else is just stealing."
>>
>>90332958

I paid for 2 years of CR memberships back in 2011 and 2012.

It was good stuff, until their simulcasts started lagging by days. Then there was no point when fansubbers got theirs out long before CR cast.
>>
>>90332860
Variety of different things. For example, just look at Symphogear. The BD average for the first season was completely average, but the the character songs sold like crazy just like with this season. Increase of sales for the source material is also very important.

I do, and I'm happy with it. For the price of a takeout meal I get most of my shows in one place quicker than most sub groups and with better sub quality, while the difference in video quality is negligible.

While yes, very little of the fees actually go to the producers, it's more than nothing and I'm at least tangibly showing my support for bringing shows to the West in an accessible way.

That's a really ignorant argument. There are thousandths of other factors to take into account with that.

Your analogy is also completely wrong, by buying Crunchyroll only a few cents end in the actual anime industry while everything else goes to the website itself, it's a service most people on /a/ don't need so it's pintless.

On the other hand, by buying BD, merchandise and importing manga you are supporting the industry way more directly since basically all the money goes to them. You are eating up a couple of intermediaries that do nothing. Plus you get something that you cannot get for free. Well, you can download the BD rips and the manga but it's always nice to have the box or the tankobon physically.

In short, buying CR is pointless unless you like the service. And you are a pleb if you enjoy that service since it's way worse than the free alternative, just slightly more convenient.

They wouldnt host, but have synopsis and details about releases and up and coming episodes / shows, likns to 3rd party merch sellers.

Genuinely interested how many people would 'gift' monie for shows they 'enjoyed'

HorribleSubs says hi. Also CR doesn't have most of the shows and streaming is always a worse option, even if it's 720p, because of non-customization and lack of archival among other things.

I think it's okay if you pay for the membership though, but it's stupid to argue that the quality can be superior to downloading.

CR was not only a site for fan subbed anime, it was also a site for Korean and Japanese drama of all types.
