He was really douchey at the beginning of the series because of the incident that occurred with him and Touga when he was younger. It pretty much cemented in his mind that Touga was a sneaky monkey that would always best him at everything and that at some point he would inevitably die or lose the things he cares about. So if he took part in the duels he would have Anthy, an eternal being that would always be with him and love him.

But obviously after being expelled from school and meeting Akio he realizes that all of that was a load of childish bullshit, and he gets his shit back together in order to help Touga and get him away from Akio's cock. And then they got over their previous friendship issues.
