I saw Evangelion 2.0 in theatres and it was definitely worth it. It is a completely different feeling to watch it with a group of like minded people, on a big screen.

I'd say theatre is better for high impact shows, like Evangelion or Madoka, whereas convention rooms are better for more casual things (Avatar TLA, High school of the Dead).
