Besides the basic hiragana alphabet there are some compound symbols. "chu" is an example of one. It is made by combining "chi" and "yu". In hiragana or katana this is demonstrated by using the half-length character for "yu". When you say the symbol you're supposed to put less effort on the 'i' ending of the first symbol.

For example.
り + ゅ = りゅ
ri + yu = ryu

Say it out loud. Ri, yu, ri, yu. riyu, ryu.

This works with any combination of letter that ends with the "い” sound, besides 'い" itself, and や, ゆ, or よ.

Also to those it may interest, you can easily type half-length characters with an english keyboard by pressing "x" before typing the letter.

It makes more sense if you say it out loud. When you combine "chi" and "yu" you don't really hear the 'y' part of 'yu' as it's started and overpowered by the 'h' from "chi".

Remember that romajinization of the japanese language wasn't an original part of it. The weirdest and most annoying thing I know of is that you have to type "du" to get づ even though the pronunciation would be more correct as "dzu".

Furthermore, it's just "chu" not "chuu". "chuu" would be ”ちゅう”.
