I spent the day sorting through and re-reading a few thousand e-mails from 2010, and it was really a blast from the past. What a year it was.
Thanks for an awesome 9 years, and for some great e-mails along the way.

As always, I read all of my e-mail and can be reached with questions/comments/concerns/hate mail/and plain ol' hellos at moot@4chan.org (or on AIM at MOOTCHAT).
tl;dr version of 2010: "SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, and VIRUSES: The Movie"

How come we don't have Anime on our screens anymore Britbros? Is it because Anime is primarily a niche market or was it due too bad exposure with series like Pokemon, etc.

I know film4 show some Kon and Ghibli movies but I would like to see some series on our screens.
>>
and while we're at what Anime do they show in your county?

We've got our fair share of pokemon on TV and theaters here too.
So I don't think that's the problem.

Very glad to be able to see movies like pic related and Ghiblies barely a month after Japan gets them.
>>
Back in 2005ish we had a couple TV channels broadcasting series like Wolf's Rain and FMA that were available via Sky without subscription. Unfortunately those channels were pretty shit and all died.

Nobody wants to risk the investment since people don't really trust animation. A film with acclaim is fine but a series requires more dedicated viewing time. Our best bet is probably a weeb attracting series being shown on one of the teen channels like BBC3 and whatever they call E4 now.
>>
>>80421943
>and whatever they call E4 now.

It's still called E4. I could honestly see them airing a shitty mainstream series after Big Bang Theory on their.

Earthsea is on Film4 in a few days.

We're getting Madoka "soon"

The last one I saw on Film 4 was Paprika and I remember watching Lupin on Channel 4 with /a/ I think.

>>80422525
Probably going to be on some fucking unknown channel. ITV4.
>>
Why does it matter? You need the general public to embrace your hobby as some form of validation? Just accept the thing you love has always been intended for a niche audience, and was never meant for mass consumption (except for Ghibli products).

Anytime an anime is produced which seems like it would have a wide appeal, it generally ends up on TV at some point.

>>80421943
That channel was my life for a while. Watched everything on there, and still have all my DVDs which I recorded every episode of every series which aired (even though I could just torrent higher quality). Got to see Planetes and FMA for the first time. Everyday it existed was a surprise, because I was constantly anticipating its cancellation. Whoever ran that must have had a lot of passion for anime, because the only thing keeping it alive was love (certainly not ratings).
>>
>>80422590
Even more unknown than that. Probably on some shit channel you find around 190 or something on Sky.
>>
We don't have shit (apart from stuff like Naruto that isn't even worth mentioning). Back in the 70s we had Princess Knight, and apparently my dad was immensely disappointed when he learned that the knight was actually a grill.

Anyone found it particularly funny when they used to show Strange Dawn right before Beyblade on channel 5? There's at least two implied/attempted rape scenes, and I recall the blood being left in too.
>>
Cartoon Network did CNX which had quite a fair bit of anime.

Sci-Fi was still airing re-runs of GiTS and CB a couple of years ago (not sure about now).

Of course, I'd still expect Cartoon Network, Sky One or Nickelodeon to air stuff like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. But even then, I'm not sure.

To the people complaining about viewership and ratings.
There is so much crap shit on telly. Just look at tonight:

Benidorm ER, The Railway: Keeping Britain on Track, The Fried Chicken Shop: Life In A Day, Flog It! Trade Secrets

Who seriously watches any of this shit.

If they replaced just a few of them with say some "good" anime. Lets say, Bebop, NGE, Madoka. Or even shit taste like Guilty Crown or TTGL. They would get way more viewers.

And to the wanker talking about muh validation. Fuck you. I like anime and I want to share it with this shitty island nation.
>>
>>80423378
>Bebop
>not shit taste as well
>>
Unless a Network like BBC or Channel4 commits to airing a full 26 episode series on one of their channels like BBC3 or More4 during a prime time slot, anime is never going to gain mainstream recognition.
>>
>>80423460
And for that, we should be thankful. I can't even imagine what Nuruturds would be like in public if anime was validated.
>>
If any channel were to air anime, it would be Channel 4.
>>
>>80423499
The thing is, the average 'fan' or narutard wouldn't even show support for good anime if it started airing, because they have shit taste.

Most people my age who claim to be fans of anime haven't even watched a film or show made within the past decade. Most of those types are hipsters of the worst kind.

I don't understand the problem though. There is so many bad programs on TV that could be replaced with anime.

Is it expensive to buy the rights to say K-ON! or something?
>>
>>80423661
No, but they'd be like anime is on TV and start preaching from there. It doesn't have to be nuruturd, it just has to be something they can validate themselves by and that would be anything other than Pokémon, Digimon, etc.
>>
>>80423635
Don't forget Japanorama on BBC. With Ross at ITV now he might try to gather momentum for anime to air.
>>
Anime is super niche over here. Plus I doubt any channel would use their money to advertise something that would probably be aired on the graveyard shit.
>>
>>80423378
Some people leave shit on all day long. Old people especially like familiar programming and nothing-particularly-happens factual programmes. Supposedly paying a few wages and camera rental works out better economically when they factor in how many times they can repeat things without people caring. Also there's always that one guy who likes train programmes no matter how bad they are. He's my dad.

The trouble is that people would complain without even watching a show because 'foreign cartoons taking up schedules', 'animation shouldn't have violence, think of the children', 'how dare they spend money on non home grown fiction', etc.

Now that I think about it Panty and Stocking is probably perfect for 'complain all you like'.

>>80423708
Yes. K-ON's a pretty big property for Japan, they'd ask for something completely disproportionate to the actual viewership.
>>
>>80423708
K-ON! airing on British telly... Just imagine.

is there even a dub?

On that, I think the main reason anime doesn't get considered by British Networks is because they would want to air dubbed stuff, and any idiot can see how low quality American dubbed anime is. Even if they wanted to air anime, they couldn't because the English dubs are so painful to listen to.
>>
I think Madoka airing in the UK is just something to hype up the movies that will hit the cinemas eventually.
>>
>tfw you don't get funimation in your area to watch obvious guilty pleasure anime from your backlog as background just to see if it's even worth really watching
>>
>>80423885
Imagine K-On with a British dub.
>>
>>80423708
K-on!
Definitely expensive. That shit is so popular it would undoubtedly cost a lot to buy the rights to broadcast it.
>>
>>80423930

>>

>How come we don't have Anime on our screens anymore Britbros? Is it because Anime is primarily a niche market or was it due too bad exposure with series like Pokemon, etc.

Because young teens and older teens don't watch much television and often times have friends and go out more. Problem is not everyone has a social life. Thing is that they rather have cheap programing and garbage programming (reality tv) because it's not controversial.

Now if someone can bring a subscription television service in the UK that shows nothing but anime, that would be something big. Even if it's online only.

(But that will never happen.)
>>
I remember Bravo used to show some anime. I remember they aired Moldiver. And I think maybe Guyver?

Does Bravo even exist anymore?

Ask them for more foreign shows to be aired in the UK.

Use Borgen and Wallander as examples. Both were big hits on BBC4.

Mary whitehouse has been dead from 12 years.

It'd be great if there was a channel that aired nothing but foreign stuff. Not necessarily inpenetreble artsy stuff, just popular or well-regarded (in its place of origin) stuff that isn't British/American/Home and Away.

And since that's the entire premise of the channel, it could all be subtitled. Cheaper than dubs and also frankly easier to listen to.

That would never happen in this country
>>

Yeah, but Ghibli movies always have good casts. Disney, who usually does the casting brings in Hollywood A-listers, rather than most dub studios who bring in VAs who are basically picked from YouTube.

>>
>>80425039
They would wear bikinis or whatever until midnight, then the service would be blocked after midnight to all those who didn't pay for the channel, after which point they would get completely naked and fuck each other with dildos. But 1 minute before midnight they would 'flash the gash' in a last effort to get viewers to pay for the premium service. they got in loads of trouble for that when whitenights caught on.
>>
>>80424384
Have you seen the terms TV listings use to describe Ghibli films? 'Uninspired fantasy drivel' was my favourite. Even The Guardian does it every so often when the one anime fan isn't writing. It's likely the young journalists will try viewing them critically (like true art critics, hoho) and comparing them to other foreign shows - most anime wouldn't fare well.

The average adult does still complain if it's brought to their attention. They treat foreign animation as cutting corners and as no substance programming for (man)children. Anime has always had a bad rep in this country as mindless entertainment and the SF and fantasy elements in a lot of recommended shows don't help give it any credibility. The BBC especially looks for any reason to cancel fiction and a handful of complaints will do them fine.
>>
In Mexico we have a TV Channel dedicated to anime, daytime is dubbed and nighttime it's either dubbed or subbed.
>>
>not watching Darker than Black and FMA in Bulgarian dub
Anime is pretty niche hear. We have 2 cons a year(one is more of a video game one) and that's it. The community used to be active around the mid 2000s but died off recently. I assume the same is happening in your west countries judging from shit on /a/.

Harvest the power of moaning.
sell it like you would any other fuel.
