So the "invitation" part of it can be represented by should? I figured eat but interpreted as a command worked.

You're thinking too much about it. It's as simple as it seems.

What? You need to learn Kanji and Kana if that's what you're asking.

It's called vocab, and yes just learning kanji isn't going to get you anywhere. You can clear all Kanji, be able to write them down and everything. But if you don't do any vocab or grammar, you won't even be able to read Yotsuba& without a dictionary.
>>
>>79339004
Yeah, particles and conjugation fall under grammar and okurigana should be learned alongside kanji, in my opinion.

Incase you don't know okurigana are the trailing kana after a kanji in the kun reading example: 行く(いく). It's how a single kanji can have 10 different meanings outside of compounds without being too confusing. Some don't have okurigana and have different readings, but fuck those.
>>

Today's reading/translation exercise:

浦島太郎
From http://chokochoko.wordpress.com/the-great-library/lower-intermediate/
Difficulty: JLPT N3

It essentially just means "called", e.g. 恋と言う気持ちはいつでも刺のある。

恋と言う気持ち just means "the feeling we call love" or "the feeling called love".

Of course, it gets used in a shitload of contexts, but if you just break it down you can usually figure out what it's trying to say.

I actually used to have trouble with という before, but I found that a bit of reading practice made it much clearer what it meant.

From my experience so far, it's easier than other languages, less conjugation. Just very context based.

I think the most problem you'll have with it is with the fucked up way sentences are structured, and when rules start getting layered upon eachother.

So do 10 new ones + reviews. This is agreed upon as a reasonable number in this thread, and more is easily possible. You'll be done in half a year. Do the same for grammar and vocab and you'll have tons of achievable goals.

I booked a flight to Japan for the month of May, I'm pretty excited. Making my way through Genki, but it's a little too slow from a grammar perspective. I guess the exercises help with remembering vocabulary.

>>79343346
I think grammar is a LOT harder than kanji, but that's mostly because you can fuck around and learn kanji without thinking/any real effort after enough time. Grammar requires your full attention for long periods of time and then requires practice.
>>
>>79343980
>fuck around and learn kanji without thinking/any real effort after enough time
Well I've found that if I'm sort of "aware" of a part of the grammar I'll notice it more and usually I understand it better. Similar with kanji.
