I just want intelligent, cultured characters doing intelligent, cultured things.

Is it too much to ask for?
>>
Yes, because intelligent, cultured people don't watch anime. If you want characters that look intelligent and culture to uncultured rubes like you LOGH might be a good place to start though.

White is certainly better, but your plan is bad.
After bishop takes on h7, black can play g6 and trap the bishop behind the pawn.
See the first game of the 1972 World Championship for a practical example of this kind of blunder.

Why the fuck would you want to watch that? Especially in animated form.

Intelligent, cultured things aren't fun to watch. Chess is also not a particularly cultured thing-it's intelligent, sure, but everyone fucking plays chess.

Please stop, it makes your intelligence appear to be significantly lower than it probably is.

Why would I -watch- intelligent, cultured things when I could just go right the fuck ahead and do them myself?

because you're an unintelligent uncultured lout
>>
>>74815126
Yes, given White's impressive spacial advantage and Black's two isolated pawns.

It shows the skill of the creators behind it, who were able to find a position which shows how there are other advantages than just having more pieces left than the other guy.

>>74815041
although intelligence would certainly be the most important thing when you get two people unfamiliar with chess, high level chess is a very specific skill that isn't really related that much to intelligence
>>
>>74815390
The game position from OP's pic is from the seventh round of the 1971 Candidates Finals; this match decided who would get to challenge Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Championship. It was played between Bobby Fischer (whom some of you may have heard of) and Tigran Petrosian (whom even a lot of chess players is unfamiliar with). Fischer had come from the earlier rounds with 6-0 scores, which was nothing less than spectacular. Petrosian had come from the earlier rounds winning just one game, and drawing the rest. Both were, in other words, undefeated so far in the matches. Fischer went on to win the first game, Petrosian the second. Petrosian got a much better position in the third, but Fischer was able to draw on a technicality, and the next two games also ended in draws. The match was very much undecided until the sixth game, where Fischer outplayed Petrosian, got a better engame, and won convincingly. The seventh, eigth, and ninth games were also won by Fischer, after which he had 6.5 points against Petrosian's 2.5, and Fischer went on to become World Champion against Spassky the next year.
>>
>>74815721
Chess is suddenly more interesting
>>
>>74815721

And I thought they just had just chosen some random position. It couldn't be a coincidence?
>>
>>74815885
Great to hear that. I've actually been studying the games of this match as a part of my chess training, as I'm very fond of Petrosian's style of play: defend solidly until the opponent makes an error, and then capitalize on it. Of course, it requires that a) you can defend against your opponent's attack, b) your opponent makes a mistake and c) you can exploit it. Yet, I find it a much more suitable playstyle than just attacking wildly, as that tends to backfire. Incidentally, the only game Petrosian won was decided by Petrosian's vigorous attack, but the third game, in which he got a better position, was a defensive masterpiece until Petrosian let Fischer repeat the position thrice and claim the draw.
>>
>>74815974

That would be an extremely unlikely coincidence. It is much more likely that the person behind this is just a chess player who liked this particular match. The majority of good chess players have at least some cursory knowledge of games between chess giants like this one. It could also be that they just wanted the board to look legitimate so they picked a professional level game at random to use as a model.
>>
>>74815974
There are trillions upon trillions of potential positions. Obviously a lot of those aren't legal and most of them aren't equal in material and one-sided in position but still, it's highly unlikely.
>>
>>74815974
A coincidence sounds very unlikely. What probably happened is that the creators decided to use a Grandmaster game for reference instead of making up a nonsensical (and possibly illegal) position themselves, which would defeat the purpose of using the chess game to portray a character as intelligent.
>>
>>74815720
I don't know about that. Is being able to memorize thousands of opening lines, mid game positions, and end game scenarios intelligent? Is being able to calculate 10 or more moves in advance accurately intelligent? Is being able to accurately evaluate positional advantages and capitalized on the most obscure and inconspicuous blunders intelligent?

I think what you want to say is that chess is a skill set that doesn't require being educated in anything but chess, but it's fairly absurd to say that high level chess isn't related to intelligence.
>>
>>74815177

You're really gonna be that fucker? "Could of" just has a more pleasing sound than "could have." Nit pick some more asshole.

The chess point is fine though, you get that point

Intelligence is required to succeed in chess, but intelligence alone is far from enough.
>>74816332
I'm just trying to help you improve. If you still stand by your view on the grammatical error, I will contest it no more.
>>74816342
That is one way to put it.
>>
>>74816408
The bishop and pawn can defend each other while the black pawns are picked off by either the bishop or the king. The black king can defend the black pawns, or attack the white ones, but not simultaneously. As long as the black king does not capture the white pawn, which is only a matter of simple endgame technique, white will inevitably win.
>>
>>74816619
>white ones
My bad. There is only one white pawn, a fact I didn't consider when wording my reply.
>>
>>74816525
Did I say that intelligence alone is enough to succeed at high level of chess? I think the content of my post is more than enough to show otherwise. What I was trying to illustrate was that the skills required to be successful at high level chess all demonstrate intelligence.
>>
>>74816619
Thanks, now I see it clearly.

Can I get better at chess by playing against my android chess app or do I need something more powerful like Chessmaster or Fritz?

I consider myself above average. I know all the rules and can beat most casuals, but I don't know shit about theory.

>>
>>74816931
You will only get better by studying chess and playing against real people. Playing computers does nothing because they don't play like people and make bizarre moves in the opening that are easily exploitable. Fritz is very good for analyzing the games you play on fcis or icc, though.
>>
>>74817015
>You will only get better by studying chess and playing against real people.
But real people are almost always easier to beat than computers.

>[Doremi].Hyouge.Mono.16.[1C1C4389].mkv

where have you been?
>>
>>74816931
It depends. I don't know how powerful your chess app is, but if you're clearly better than it, you will not improve very much. The best improvement is the one you get from playing, preferably against someone who's a little bit better than you are. A human being is the best option, but if that is unavailable, a decent chess program or app with a good number of difficulty settings is completely usable. Try to look over a number of Grandmaster games; which one is decided from the style(s) you prefer.

Also, solve puzzles. It will make you a significantly better tactician.
>>
>>74817152

I know about it, but I'm not getting my hopes up again.
>>
>>74817154
What kind of puzzles?
>>
>>74817063
That doesn't mean that learning how to beat computers at chess will make you an expert level player. I guess it all depends on what your metric for being good at chess entails. Do you want to be able to beat strong players at chess, do you want to simply have knowledge about chess, or do you simply want to be able to win games and have fun regardless of who the opponent is. All these require different skill sets and have different degrees of difficulty.

By the way, computers are only better than humans at calculating. There are ways to exploit their decision making with plays that would get you crushed against competent human opponents. Especially with weak computers like the adroid chess software.

Chess puzzles, perhaps better known as chess problems.
Shredder's site is a good place to start:
http://www.shredderchess.com/daily-chess-puzzle/
http://www.shredderchess.com/weekly-chess-problems.html
Solve them every day, and you will certainly improve.
>>
>>74817257
Go to chessgames.com and try to solve their puzzle of the day, just keep in mind that their puzzles are usually not the typical "find mate in 2" puzzles like you see in the newspaper.
>>
>>74817396
Playing for win is much more practical than "finding mate in 2" anyway.
>>
>>74817538
I agree, but it makes it hard to explain how to find the solution to someone who is unfamiliar with that style of puzzle. I especially like it when chessgames will try to pull a fast one on me by mixing in a "play for the draw" puzzle with their "play for the win" puzzles.
>>
>>74817538
Yes, but a tactical combination winning you a pawn, or even a minor piece, could be what gave you the win you were playing for.
Experience in finding tactical opportunities is invaluable.
