Is anyone else sick of hearing about how slow and shallow this show apparently is?

I mean, the use of school antics is a bit much, but for all intents and purposes we're still in an essentially well handled extended stretch of rising action/decent charaterization. Every time I see someone bitching about the plot not making sense and the whole show just being an excuse for stylistic fluff, I wonder exactly what they want. If not a slow buildup revealed through showing instead of telling, do they just want some sort of stupid monologue infodump? Is action supposed to always take the pace of a shitty battle shounen?

You know, it surprises me that nobody's brought up Penguindrum in K threads. The complaints about K are almost identical to those of Penguindrum's while it was airing.

I'm still holding out for this show, because I love the animation, and I think it has potential for some good action, but so far I don't feel anything towards any of the characters, the humor isn't really doing anything for me, and the second episode made me want to hang myself.

I can't wait for Neko to play a role beyond moe/comic relief; she's the only character that's remotely entertaining.

Penguindrum quickly thinned out the people who weren't there for a surreal symbolism-saturated ride, and the pacing complaints didn't really start up until the third fourth of the show. K, on the other hand, is still drawing almost all of its viewers from those there for the action or the antics, and isn't really delving into magic realism or anything so much as it's just being vague.

Why do anyone here thinks this show's animation is good? The movements are way too choppy, the backgrounds don't blend, why?

She's just so... Vestigial. I wanted to trust the show to not just make her a plot device with a pair of tits, but that seems like pretty much exactly what they're doing. She's an excuse for Shiro to get away from Kuro at first, she's an excuse for Shiro to remind Kuro of his old master, everything about her so far is either to set up fanservice or to serve a temporal/circumstantial purpose.

Grammar nazi'ing aside, the visuals are ridiculously good as a whole. It's stupidly fluid at times, and never less than above serviceable even in scenes that don't require it. The backgrounds and often foregrounds are also incredibly detailed, and the design is excessive, but handled as such. It's colorful, often because of the use of filters, yes, but as a whole, it's the sort of show that's always memorable visually.

But like, you know, since half of your reasoning was pointless without examples, and the other was an example of set design instead of animation, I'm wondering exactly why I'm extrapolating so far in my answer other than "What on earth are you on about?".

It isn't so much comic relief that bothers me, she's just failing to function as a character at all. She stands there, and basically is thrust forward every time the writer needs anything to happen that's beyond the actual characters in play at the moment. Since her boundaries are undefined, it feels like she's being used as a tool, a third wheel tugged around until they need someone to play any given part. Most of the shit she's done so far could have easily been a random extra interacting, and the rest is just MAGIC.

I think the show has a comic enough tone overall that it'll be easy enough for him to act serious later on and have it not me too jarring. I can easily see this being one of those shows that builds up to vagueness for the first eight episodes, than spends the remaining four having shit go down in a slightly less vague-way towards the vague point of climax, before ending in a way that sort of answers questions but doesn't satisfy.

In the otaku market, they pretty much are. Since the nature of BD's value is in them being the super nice limited edition first run and all that, the otaku who buy anime typically do so in a preorder. This isn't absolute, of course, but it's pretty much always the case if it's the demographic, time and again.

Now, since this show has a potential apppeal to fujoshi, it's possible we might see DVD sales rocket after release or something, since that's how they tend to roll, but you can never count on that.
