Hello daily thread.

I'm thinking of going through KanjiDamage anki just to memorize the kanji, and ignore the jukugo until I finish all the kanji since it seems like a pain in the ass right now.

After getting all the kanji down, I'll do another anki for the jukugo. Is there any foreseeable problem with this, besides the fact I won't really be able to read shit for a really long time?
>>
>>68418015
>I'm thinking of going through KanjiDamage anki just to memorize the kanji, and ignore the jukugo until I finish all the kanji since it seems like a pain in the ass right now.
You'll be solely learning kanji for 7 months in the least without being able to cover the other areas.
You can't just dickass this language.
> besides the fact I won't really be able to read shit for a really long time?
You won't be able to read shit for a very long time.
>>
>>68418142
If it takes you 7 months to get through kanjidicks you need to alter your study habits if you ever hope to get far with this language.
>>
>>68418015
That's how I did it. I've had no problems. Just don't listen to people telling you to do some small number of kanji a day, claiming you won't remember shit if you go above some arbitrary number.
I finished kanjidamage in 2 months, while going through Tae Kim's and looking at walls of runes every day trying to spot kanji I know and ctrl+f on the kanjidamage list if not.
>>68418142
>7 months in the least without being able to cover the other areas.
You're not being serious, are you? Please tell me you're not this retarded.
>>
>>68418546
>>68418482
Assuming you cover 15 kanji a day everyday and never miss a day, it will take you approximately 167 days to cover 2500 kanji, which is about the mount you need to cover. Going at a rate of 15 a day and never missing a day it will take you more than 5 months to cover that amount of kanji.
>>
>>68418546
This. I started out doing 5 kanji each day after some people warned me that I wouldn't be able to remember the kanji if I did more. I've been doing around 40 each day and I got no problem remembering them.

Also, study the kanji in Tae Kim's guide. It will take a bit more effort to remember them by brute force but you will really feel like you're making progress when you actually writing kanji instead of a cluster of kana.
>>
If I try to remember more than 10 kanji a day I just end up forgetting it. I don't know how you guys are learning so many.
>>
>>68418715
You should be doing a lot more than 15 a day.

I did RTK in less than a month and if anything I feel like doing them as fast as possible help me remember since all the old radicals were fresh in mind.

Anyway 15 kanji a day is probably less than 30 minutes, you'll never learn any language at that rate.
>>
>>68418715
>2500 kanji
Kanjidamage does not have 2500 kanji.
After finishing, I just started reading and making new cards for the kanji I hadn't already learned.
>15 kanji a day
Why would you limit yourself to 15 kanji a day if you consider it a problem? I did over a 100 in one day when I was feeling especially motivated.
>>
>>68418874
heisig+anki here, forget rate kinda high for a few revisions but gets easy after a few, plus anki places revisions well, what are you using to learn and revise?
>>
>>68418950
>Kanjidamage does not have 2500 kanji.
Kanjidamage is missing a lot of Jouyou kanji. If you pursue this language to it's fullest I can promise you that you will see every single jouyou kanji used a couple of times.
>I did over a 100 in one day when I was feeling especially motivated.
Congratulations, but I can't do that.
>>
>>68418950
>Over a 200 readings, 100 readings, 100 characters to associate with the readings and meanings and possibly 100 characters to write
I'm calling bullshit, unless you're going solely by meaning.
>>
>>68419024
I use Anki and real flash cards. The real flash cards seem to stick in my mind better than Anki does, so I focus on them more.

100 meanings*
>>
>>68419139
Have you tried writing down the kanji you have forgotten? It helps me with remembering some of the trickier kanji
>>
>>68419212
The two hundred or so I have down I haven't forgotten and can write them from memory. It's only if I try to do more than 10 or so a day I just can't remember them. Thus, I generally just learn between 5-8 a day.
>>
>>68419303
I forgot to say I write down all the kanji I practice. Even after I learn one in Anki I make a flash card out of it.
>>
>people learning 40 kanji a day
>i can only write the first 3 rows of hiragana from memory after 3 hours spread over 2 days

Is my brain just not that good?
>>
Can we all just stop flexing our e-penis about how much kanji we can do per day and actually offer some constructive advice to newcomers?

Seriously, just go at your own pace. Find a number your comfortable with and increase until it gets to difficult. That's my advice.
>>
>>68419345
They're probably taking shortcuts (e.g. meanings only), exaggerating, or lying to either make you feel bad or to motivate you to pick up the pace.
>>

>>68419463

>>
>>68419345
Nah. I'm only doing 10 kanji a day currently. Don't try to follow another guy's prescription on how many kanji to learn each day. Everyone's brain works differently and if you can learn better and retain longer by following your method then do that.
>>
>>68419039
That wasn't the point. No one's saying you should just finish Kanjidamage and never learn any new kanji after that.
Going through Kanjidamage before you really start with the rest is only supposed to give you some solid groundwork to start off with. You'll have the method to learn new kanji on your own down, and you can recognize most of the parts new kanji will consists of, as well as being able to recognize almost all the kanji you'll see in intermediate writing.
Kanjidamage gives you a good base to start studying on your own from.
>>68419131
Memorizing everything in one go, out of context, makes no sense at all. Heisig and Kanjidamage are good for learning to recognize characters and getting you used to how they're formed.
Learning vocabulary off lists is as inefficient as you can go.

Yes, I only focused on associating the meaning, or rather the keyword presented, with the kanji. I felt that to be the most efficient way to go about it, and it hasn't failed me.
I only glanced over the readings and words as I studied, and a lot of them stuck just like that, but I never failed a card because I couldn't remember the extra information.
>>
>>68419645
>That wasn't the point.
We're arguing different things here. I'm saying that you should learn all of the jouyou kanji before you stop learning them daily. You're implying that I'm as saying something that I'm not.

As far as the rest goes, I feel it's entirely up to how you want to approach it and therefore I'm not willing to argue over it.
>>

Guys my morale is falling quite a bit. I've been doing some 10 Kanji per day, and as much effort as I put into it, I'm finding that I can really only learn the meanings, but have trouble with getting pronunciations to stick. And despite all the effort, I really can't say much in Japanese besides baby shit.

What do you guys do when you're in a slump? I don't want to give up, I don't plan on it, but I want to feel like my work is paying off.

Does anyone have any other sources for Japanese subs for anime (or tokusatsu)?

http://kitsunekko.net/subtitles/japanese/ has been down for a few days, and I don't know whether it will come back or not

Of course I can just listen and figure out what they're saying, but having subs helps with words I'm confused about, and if you have subs, you can use a text hooker to copy/paste them into Anki rather than typing it out by hand.

I felt that all of last week but recently I've been able to read and decipher the meaning of everything I've bothered with and that has helped my motivation. Because I'm seeing that I can understand I want to try reading a lot of things. However, I don't have enough kanji to go through things easily and how I want to. Because of that, I'm using this as motivation to learn more kanji and bring myself up to where I want to be.

>>
>>68419798
As long as you study by reading Japanese, you'll be adding kanji every day. The only difference I see in how we feel about the issue is when to stop exclusively grinding kanji and move on to reading things.
I don't think it actually matters at all how far you decide to go with your initial kanji studies, but I'd imagine if you're not going over a lot of kanji every day, you'd want to do other things earlier.

I don't really understand how it's possible to only do a small amount of kanji every day if that's almost all you're doing and you're devoting a good chunk of time to studying every day.

>>68419849
Consider learning things in context, as you read. Having to look up every word when you start out can be tough, but it gets better.
There's nothing wrong with only memorizing meanings while studying kanji. That's the only thing the Heisig method teaches you.
>>
>>68419849
The mnemonics on kanjidamage isn't working for you?

Building up your vocabulary might help. It makes it easier to associate pronunciations with the kanji.
>>
I've learned ~900 kanji and what seemed like sufficent grammar from tae kim and a few places, but I'm trying simple VN with an english translation included, looking up any kanji I don't know, as I figured this was a good way to get vocab, but I somehow always find it hard to really 'get' alot of the japanese stuff and how it would mean the english translation - but not stuff a translator works on, eg. a kanji or hiragana gramatical device I thought I knew being used in a weird way. Hard to know what to do about it without someone to ask about each example, any ideas?

>>
>>68420196
VNs aren't the best way to start out. They're aimed at adult audiences, and most of the time the language is much more complex than you'd find in some simple manga.
There may be some exceptions, of course.

>>68420231
A lot. It's better if you stop thinking in terms of how many X you need to read Y. Just try it out yourself and start doing something you enjoy in Japanese.
>>
>>68420231
learning kanji in order of usefulness is a terribad idea as it limits ability to use radicals in learning, so you should probably just do the ~2000 common kanij sets in a radical learning method such as heisig or kanjidamage.

>>

Go through something like Tae Kim for grammar, and you can learn kanji by going through something like Kanji Damage.
>>
>mfw people waste their time with RTK and other bullshit shortcuts to learning kanji

Have fun not being able to read, speak or write anything in Japanese. It's not race, trying to memorize 15+ kanji a day is fine, but are you able to use it correctly in a sentence? Do you know how to write it? Do you know all the on-yomi and kun-yomi for it?

If you answered no to any of these, you're only hurting yourself.

Learning a language is not a race, it's something you'll use for the rest of your life. Why do you all expect to learn it in under a year? It's a completely unrealistic expectation.

Want to know how to keep motivated? How about not having idiotic expectations?
>>
>>68421780
Most people here would suggest tae kim's guide for grammar, which is free or Genki, if you want to use something the need for a computer. I'm still learning, so I can't confidently say which is the best method. Tae Kim has the added boon of having forums.
>>

Genki and Tae-Kim.

Genki has everything you'll need. Everything. Vocab, Kanji, Grammar, etc. Be sure to look up EVERY kanji they use and add them to your anki deck.

Tae-Kim has clear and concise grammar explanations and should be used to reinforce what you learn in Genki.
