It's like Koizumi, but it's played as less of a parody and more straight up. Spoilers for episode 19, but if you don't get upset by this, then you could probably tolerate the show.

The main character has a baiman hand of 1112222333344-pin which if she gets a 1 pin, she'll get a Full-flush Ryan pei Kou. The girl with the most points discards that 1 pin, but instead of winning on it, she calls a Kan. Then she draws a five, calls another kan, gets a four, calls her LAST Kan, gets a five, and Tsumos for a Counted Yakuman. The worst part about this whole affair is not only is it stupid rare that it happened, but the entire show is played out like this is her special power and she can take apart winning hands at ANY TIME to pull this level of bullshit for no reason.

Honestly, Koizumi I can understand, because, seriously, 72 Dora? It's obvious parody. This is just blatant lesbian bullshit.

Now, if you really take the game aspect of the series too seriously.

You should also be mad @ Koromo for not ending the game when she had the opportunity to drive Kana in the negative - but instead, she decided to dick around in a bid to humilate the other two players points-wise.

And that would have prevented that bullshit counted yakuman from ever happening.

Tetsuya and Akagi have complete statistical near-impossibility in fucking spades, even when they're not blatantly cheating. Really, the actual mahjong is pretty nice when it's actually shown. Achiga is actually significantly lighter on mahjong than the main series, though. Saki matches routinely have monologues where the characters are trying to read their opponent's discards.

It's not like I don't understand the appeal of it. With Akagi, it's how relentlessly he attacks the psyche of his opponents with his complete balls-of-the-wall waits, demonic luck, and the pressure he puts them under. With Tetsuya, it's essentially a show about magicians trying to one up each other and figure out how the opponent got the rabbit out of the hat before it's too late. It's almost like a mystery with a time pressure involving a tile game. Koizumi is just meant to be ridiculous right off the bat.

Saki is where I draw the line in terms of luck based games. DBZ I can stand cause they have to rely on their own skill. The ridiculous lesbian powers is too much.

I fully encourage you to enjoy it though.

It's not even the fact she kan'd 3 times. It's the fact that she used her own winning tiles to do it with, each time lessening the value of her hand until the last call, and potentially throwing away the match. It's the fact she relied on it to win. "Oh, sorry, I won't win on that tile cause I won't have enough points. I'll just win on this ass pull I'm about to do."

Kuro won't do shit, she's a terrible player.

Saki, Koromo, and Teru all have shown that they were capable of strong standard play and used their mahjong powers to augment their normal game. While Saki does win whenever she calls a kan, we see her winning often without calling a kan as well.

Kuro, on the other hand, is entirely reliant on her ability to the point where it actually limits her ability to play normally. She's a gimmick, not a player. Worst lesbian in Saki, hands down.

    Cons:
•You have to lock your hand in place, meaning if the tile you draw isn't your winning tile, you must discard it, even if you know its a bad idea
-an exception is a closed kan, as long as it doesn't change your winning tiles
•It broadcasts to the table that you're in tenpai, meaning one tile away from winning. If they start playing defensively, they could avoid throwing out your winning tile.
•You HAVE to call on the first winning-hand tile you come across. If you don't, your hand is in a state called Furiten, which means that if you try winning off another player's tile, you're in deep shit.

    Pros:
•Adds 1 han to your hand. This allows you to win on even the most shitty hands even if they aren't worth anything.
•If you win before you discard on your next turn, you get an extra hand for Ippatsu, or one shot.
•When you win while in Riichi, you get to flip over all the dora indicators to look for MORE dora tiles, which can turn a shitty hand into a monster.
•It can intimidate lesser players into trashing their own hand to prevent them from winning when they need to.

You just have to be in tenpai. Doesn't matter what your hand is, or what you're waiting for, as long as you're one tile away from having a valid hand (even a valid hand without any other yaku).
    >> Anonymous 05/11/12(Fri)05:01 No.65600274
    >>65600209

Nope. Only your own hand. It's basically you saying "HEY BITCHES, MY HAND IS ABOUT TO GO OUT, WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT?!"

Minimum condition is simply have a legal hand in tenpai. Since you're trying to make 4 sets of three and a pair, you could say have a:

    123 bamboo
    444 Characters
    999 Characters
    A red dragon pair
And have a 56 pin as your last remaining set. That hand is worth jack all, but you can riichi on it and still go out.

No, they're free to change their hands as much as they want. It does limit their discards if they want to play defensively, though.

Yeah, you gotta watch out if a server is open pinfu/tanyao. If they allow it to be open, the best strategy in that room is to just win one hand really fast, get above 30,000, then play hyper defensively.

Actually, playing with no defense after another player calls riichi is a common beginner mistake, since dealing into a riichi is often setting yourself up for an ugly surprise because of uradora. If you don't have any hope of making a hand soon, it's not wrong to play completely defensively. Hell, some people recommend going completely defensive if you're not in iishanten or better when someone calls riichi.

Nothing is stopping you from discarding your own winning tile if you're in riichi.
To expand a bit you also go into furiten if your opponent discards your winning tile and you don't call a ron on it.
    >> Anonymous 05/11/12(Fri)07:41 No.65603764
    >>65603602
    Hai.

If at any point during the game you discarded one of your winning tiles, you cannot go out on Ron. Trying to do so will make you pay a penalty fee.

For instance, if you have a 1 bamboo at the start of the game that you discard, but later on, you're in tenpai with a 2-3 bamboo waiting on 1 or 4 bamboo, then it's impossible for you to Ron, because you can make a winning hand from the 1 bamboo. Yes, EVEN IF that one bamboo would actually take away a han. If it's a legal, winning combination, you can't ron on it. You can still Tsumo (draw it yourself), but ron is impossible.

Ever notice how when the players steal tiles, they rotate one of them in a specific direction? It's actually to indicate from whom a tile was stolen, because even stolen tiles will land you in Furiten.

You can also be in temporary furiten if you're in tenpai, and you fail to call on someone's discard that was your winning tile. This lasts until you discard again. So if the player to your left just before you discarded your winning tile, but you didn't call it, no sweat. But if the player from right-across-left discarded them in succession, you're just plain boned if you didn't call it the first time.

You will also be in furiten if you're in Riichi and someone discards a winning tile and you don't call on it. This one is permanent. When they say you HAVE to go out, you HAVE to go out.

    1. I declared nothing
    2. I 'm waiting for either 1 or 4 bamboo
3a. Someone discard a 1 bamboo, I'm not allowed to Ron for that tile
3b. I draw a 1 bamboo of the wall, tsumo
    4. Since I'm not in a riichi I can get out of this by changing my tenpai combination?

    To get higher points.

Ie. tenpai with 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8 man, random pair and some other set.
You could pass a win on 6 man/3 man to get higher points by winning on a 9 man.

The main time you might want to pass on a winning tile when you've declared riichi is if it would end the game prematurely. For example, you're in 2nd/3rd place and 4th place, who only has 500 points left, discards your winning tile. If you call that, win and take their points the game ends and you might still be in 2nd/3rd. It's not a common occurance, but it happens.

What the anon above me said. You could be waiting on a 1 or 4 wait, but the 4 will lead into another hand and give you more han, whereas the 1 will only give you so-and-so han. It sucks, but it's how the tiles arrange sometimes.

This is important. You wouldn't want to prematurely end the game.
The only time you'd want to win off someone who would lose all their points is if you're in first or if that will get you to first., also, in tenhou if you want to preserve your stats by at least getting into second place(lol, fag.)

The thing about "international" leagues in mahjong is that they probably aren't riichi mahjong. Even if they are, they're probably incomparably smaller scenes compared to Japanese riichi mahjong. I don't know how much international titles in the Saki universe will actually count for.

As far as Shiraitodai going against Rinkai, I'm confident Shiraitodai could take them, definitely. Whether or not Kiyosumi would have such an easy time of it, though, I'm not so certain.

You shouldn't have riiched since you're in furiten since you threw the 2-pin earlier. You could have thrown the 2-pin or 6-pin but then you would then have a single wait on the 3-man which is impossible to win from since the other 2 3-man have already been discarded.

You should have waited for your next tile, and if you can win off that tile you riichi then throwing either the 2-pin or 6-pin.

Wayyyyy back in the day (talking 2009 here) I got started on a mahjong guide by an anon for anons. It was really going to be really in-depth that explained how to play mahjong in great detail plus a page on every yaku, even going as far to explain some subtle advanced rules that pertain to them.
And just for fun and since I love mahjong video games, I added a section on beginner-friendly games that you can download.
Sadly, the project wore on me a great deal with work and college, I dropped it, and I never transferred it to my new computer.

you can play online with the free version, i think you're only missing the single player/lesson component.

and you get "gold" from just playing, its not like you have to pay money just to play a round.

Think of it this way, the most you can lose from a no-ten penalty would be 3k points and your dealership. Breaking your tenpai is actually preferable than risk losing at least around 4k points.
