It isn't a good substitute for the visual novels. Many of the most dramatic and awesome parts of Umineko are built up to over the course of the visual novels with a really good sountrack involved. The anime condenses it all in a way that loses impact and does away with many of the tunes that help shape these moments, as well as it doesn't come off as nearly as involving towards the mysteries of Rokkenjima. The main issue is the visual novels altogether is a pretty long read, but is much, much worth it over watching the anime.

So, my memory is a little foggy about Umineko. There are so many details and it has been so long, but I have some questions and thoughts. Wasn't there some message about because of the cliff accident 19 years before with Yasu, he/she was somehow never the same and different? Couldn't it be that Yasu was a boy, and his reproductive organ was affected? Thus, like many cases in the earlier part of the century, he would be raised as a female or something.
