Nerv is taken over by the UN or SEELE or whatever after the Third Impact business. Several new characters are introduced who are taking command while Nerv characters are being interrogated.

The UN in the meantime rolls out Jet Alone Prime, seizing the opportunity of the world's outrage towards Nerv. Jet Alone Prime is much like the Mechagodzilla from Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 from 1993; it has multiple pilots and they try their best, but it mostly just gets it's ass kicked easily.

The political intrigue plot is expanded on with Kaji and Misato playing on opposing sides.

Asuka and Mari are the only "regular" Eva pilots for most of the movie.

I've been thinking. It seems to me like Mari is part of the character of the original series' Asuka. Mari is the aggressive, emotional, domineering side with the Darker red hair, while Shikinami is the more delicate, vulnerable moemoe side with the lighter blonde-ish hair.

The final scene is metaphorical of the Hedgehog's Dilemma. Note clues in the imagery (the distance of their hands, the two statues separated from each other with their arms spread out in the distance).

Shinji lashes out at Asuka for causing him pain (basically finishing what he started in the kitchen scene). She doesn't react violently, but instead strokes his cheek. This is a reversal of their attitudes and behavior. The hedgehog's dilemma is thematically resolved when Shinji accepts that along with causing pain, people can also change. But Asuka still feels sick about it all and voices this (in my view, because it took that much for Shinji to even express himself).

You're supposed to piece it together yourself, but it's the conclusion to the main theme of loneliness and fear of rejection.

I feel Shinji was at the very least physically attracted to Asuka. There's multiple signs of this (even in Rebuild). But his problem I think is he's actually afraid of Asuka. So it's hard for him to actively reach out to her because she snaps at him so much. And he's hypersensitive to that. As far as Shinji caring about Asuka as a person, there's little bits and pieces here to support that. They aren't really overt because Eva isn't exactly a romance anime, so it's muted. Things like Shinji's smile when Asuka is describing her resolve to prove Misato wrong, etc etc. Also, in early episodes, Shinji and Asuka are typically the characters confiding in each other when it's just the pilots on screen. Rei can be standing right there, but they often talk between themselves like she isn't.

Basically saying Shinji didn't care at all about Asuka is pushing it, even if you don't support the idea of them pairing.

When I watch early episodes and all three pilots are on screen together their dynamics seem to push Shinji and Asuka together more. If anything, Rei comes off as more of an outsider amongst them. Shinji asks Asuka about why they're fighting angels, Shinji and Asuka make fun of Misato behind her back multiple times, Asuka teases Shinji about Rei when Rei is like five feet away in the same lift with them, shit like that.

Later of course things go more sour, but you needed that level of familiarity between the two for that to carry any weight. That's why I personally found Asuka's role in Rebuild to be rather weak. The rest of the movie is pretty strong but Asuka and Shinji's interaction is so limited that by the time the Bardiel scene comes around it feels waaaay too early. I mean, you need to at least plant the seeds before you can harvest the crop, you know?

Perhaps she doesn't even have a past trauma any more. From all perspectives, she's a better person, and in light of that, her characterization makes sense. We've got a rational Asuka this time, who can see that what she's doing simply isn't working, and never will.

Rei has changed too, while she's not more open, she's taking more opportunities to show and sow kindness between others. She also has more concern for herself as a result too.

Emotionally, it even looks like she's more easily affected too - look at the face she makes after Asuka is eaten and Shinji runs away. Could even be guilt.

Yeah, I see that. It could also be that Shinji and Rei are more at ease with silence because they don't feel the need to gab all the time. But I'm mostly talking about the fact that Shinji and Asuka are pretty comfortable around each other in these early action adventure episodes. They defer to each other when they have something to say. It's not until Shinji starts surpassing Asuka's scores that she feels threatened by him and starts flipping out.

What's funny too is Shinji doesn't often correct Asuka in these instances. Asuka whispers about how Rei is scary and will do anything to get ahead. For some reason Shinji doesn't say "That's not true at all Asuka, you don't even know her. So shut your mouth." And when Asuka comments on the preposterous nature of Misato's plan to catch the falling angel, Shinji agrees and even adds to it. "Steak sounds pretty lame right about now....Yeah, that dumb bimbo wastes money on the lottery, too."

Hope they use the new Rebuild films to expand on Mari, Kaworu and the other new pilots. I'm kind of getting tired of Asuka and Rei.

That's all fine and good, but the movie tries to sell the Bardiel scene a certain way and I don't think it makes much sense the way it plays out. That kind of significant, character changing event really ought to happen a bit later in a character's arc. It was fine for Shinji's arc, but speaking of Asuka's arc specifically, it was too early. And what makes it worse is that her arc is tangential to the main plot. So it's like this side thing gets started and then promptly cut off. It just feels awkward. I think most of her time in 2.0 should have been spent getting her acclimated to the plot and the other characters and then save her big character stuff for 3.0. Even if that made her less of a big deal in 2.0 itself, it would make more sense to me.

They still have the chance to do more development for her in the third one. But it'll have to be done pretty carefully, because as you said, it's not even clear what her past is like. And without those kinds of things acting as a foundation for her character, it makes it hard to 'believe' certain twists in characterization.
