I can kind of relate to how the OP feels about jazz in the manga. I'm playing in a concert band right now, and a couple pieces we're going to be performing are jazz and it took me a little bit to get back "into" the style.

I was in a jazz band in high school but that was kind of a while ago so I don't remember everything like the scales and stuff.

Hard Bop is a gateway jazz of the worst kind. It's a bad jazz, a final meaninglessness of the popular and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive largeness of timbre and quasi-GOSPEL influences. The normal hipster can see this as the shit it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the music itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

I really like Jazz, but I can't consider myself a fan as my Jazz knowledge is very limited. Aside from miles Davis, I'm not aware of any bands/artists but I do know a couple more songs and stuff.

I found the first episode of this anime to be really good and I hope it's going to put the music before the drama. Also, as a slice of life it worked well, it didn't strike me as cringe worthy and the first episode of slice of life anime set in high schools usually are.

Also, Sentaro kinda came off as being a dick just because he likes being a dick, which is a good thing. The "fighting three seniors part was a bit underwhelming though"

They had a shot of the Kind of Blue cover in the record shop. Maybe they figure it's too popular, or Kanno just didn't like it? I remember reading in an interview years ago that she didn't like Jazz all that much.

I've always disagreed with this, and it bothers me that people think the need to 'get' or 'understand' Jazz to think themselves a fan. If you want to acquire more Jazz knowledge, then by all means, but you only need to enjoy the music to be a fan.

I don't even Classical music has such a perceived barrier of entry.

I know exactly how you feel. But, of course, that all comes with time. For example, I can recognize seiyuu by voices easily (as can others), but that was because I watched so many shows over the years and not because I went and studied what they sound like.

When I first started getting into Jazz, I thought I had to acquire all the knowledge about it. Borrowed books, read all these articles... Maybe it helped, maybe it didn't. But older Jazz fans I spoke to just laughed that off and said to just listen to what you can and enjoy what you like.

Maybe we just can't imagine what it's like to start from square one again?

The thing is, if you simply want to enjoy the basic stuff you find on the surface, like the beat and the nice tunes, jazz really isn't the best genre for it. Whenever I see someone trying to find these things in jazz, I get the impression that it's not really jazz itself they appreciate, but the image of it.

Jazz, generally, is about complex harmonies and rhythm, and spontaneous musical creativity. Truly appreciating these things requires at least basic knowledge of the music theory behind jazz.

It's not like I'm telling you to not enjoy yourself, just suggesting that if you really want to understand the passion jazz lovers have for the genre, it would be very rewarding if you studied it more. I promise you, there's a whole new world of musical enjoyment before you when you decide to take the step, and you might even come to see your previous attitude towards music as half-assed.

Well, I mean, is there really something wrong with that? It's like appreciating a painting because it's pretty instead of appreciating it because the style and the interpretation. I get your point, but I don't think there's anything bad with listening to jazz just because it sounds good. Usually, the ones who listen to the jazz "for the image" listen to smooth jazz, anyway, so they get exactly what they looked for without having all the complexity of older stuff.

It isn't necessary when starting out, however, nor is it required to enjoy the music. Interest in that sort of thing grows with time.

I agree that more knowledge can increase enjoyment -- that's true for anything. To say that someone can't 'truly' enjoy something without a certain level of knowledge, however, means that there's a wrong way to enjoy it, and I don't accept that. Jazz, like Classical, or any other art form with multiple layers, can have its casual admirers.

Also, you're assuming I don't study about Jazz already. I do, but that's because I -WANT- to do so. I certainly wouldn't tell anyone else to, especially if they're just curious at first.

I think appreciating jazz does require an understanding of its spontaneous nature. You sort of need to learn to look at what is there and let go of the things that can't be included so well in music being created on the spot. To do that you really need to listen to a LOT of music of all kinds.

You don't have to do anything to appreciate jazz. You just have to listen and FEEL.

People talk about jazz in terms of 'studying' because it's so complex. It's not album or artist driven, it's kind of an amoeba of music and musicians, with numerous renditions, sessions, re-writes, and re-recordings. There are also few definitive 'groups' because artists would get together in groups, record, and then go have sessions with other artists.

It's tough to describe jazz. That's why you just need to feel it.

I agree that the most important thing is to feel, but jazz has such a rich cultural history and is so musically complex that it's at least worth it to give due diligence to these things.

I already am. The trumpet. I'm yearning to play in either a funk band or a dixieland band. Thing is, my advancement is pretty damn slow and for some reason I'm always too nervous to play a melody. I asked my teacher about that but he told me that there are no secrets, I just have to relax and practice more. I don't think there's a secret but there could at least be something more to that.
    >>64228593
Well, I already enjoy it, I suppose. I have a decent Jazz collection, but it was rare for me to think "Holy shit THAT'S AMAZING", with a few exceptions on extremely complex and well-led albums. That said, I still listen to Jazz pretty much every day and come back home with Jazz albums every time I go to the library.

I agree, I am trying to say that the complexity of jazz creates a perceived barrier of entry that many see as insurmountable. I want to say that people should first just enjoy the music before they begin to delve into it's rich yet unimaginably deep history.

I've went past that barrier, and I imagine that's what people say when they want to "study" jazz. Do you know any good books that gives a good idea of jazz history without being too complex for non-musicians?

Funny thing about this song..is a long time ago i transferred to a school out in the country, and my whole life i had only known my father's classical music. And as the rich spoiled type i wasn't fitting in at all, but my first day at school i got mixed up with the schools famous delinquent and instead of getting beat up i ended up discovering a passion for jazz--this was the first song i ever practiced outside of classical.
