not like I'm telling you to not enjoy yourself, just suggesting that if
you really want to understand the passion jazz lovers have for the
genre, it would be very rewarding if you studied it more. I promise you,
there's a whole new world of musical enjoyment before you when you
decide to take the step, and you might even come to see your previous
attitude towards music as half-assed.
It isn't necessary
when starting out, however, nor is it required to enjoy the music.
Interest in that sort of thing grows with time.
I agree that
more knowledge can increase enjoyment -- that's true for anything. To
say that someone can't 'truly' enjoy something without a certain level
of knowledge, however, means that there's a wrong way to enjoy it, and I
don't accept that. Jazz, like Classical, or any other art form with
multiple layers, can have its casual admirers.
Also,
you're assuming I don't study about Jazz already. I do, but that's
because I -WANT- to do so. I certainly wouldn't tell anyone else to,
especially if they're just curious at first. |
