He always hated Alucard. He stole his thunder in the battlefield, Integra favoring Alucard over him seemed to have something to do, he hated being that cool old guy. Alucard taunted the fuck of him as they fought because he was going to be "too old" and forgotten.

Walter's an arrogant prick. Go read the manga. He acts politely, but he insults Alucard (his supposed friend) when his back is turned. He's also pretty arrogant. Integra ate her pride and asked for help when Maxwell came along. Walter didn't want to.

The reasons of hating Alucard came up as half assed because Hirano didn't finish Hellsing: the Dawn (where you can see they don't like each others). The official guidebook reveals it would have been clearer if he did.

OVA went full retard and cut the whole present/past parallel narrative of a vampire traveling to England to claim a woman he wanted to fuck. The mist and fog were mentioned and how the ship aboard was filled with corpses and one coffin.

The theme of past repeating itself was a BIG FUCKING thing in the manga. Major even called it a rehearsal of the play that was staged 100 years ago (Dracula themed).

Stoker is the writer of the novel Dracula...? Coppola made a movie adaptation with a reincarnation subplot love story between Mina and Dracula in 1992.

Hirano was inspired by both and other Dracula stuff (the guy is a big geek, he wrote Hellsing because he wanted to make a tribute to Dracula, that's why he published it in the 100th anniversary of the novel). He had Vlad wear a similar armor of the Vlad in the Coppola version and had a romantic subplot with Mina (it's only mentioned) without reincarnation hinjinks involved. Mostly he sticks to Stoker aside of that.

Oh and he omits Harker, Mina's husband. Major mentions in the Dawn that Abraham and Dracula fought 'over her' ("madness and sanity fought over her and sanity won"). So who knows.
