Personally, I feel that Warhammer Fantasy gets you into a lot of bad habits that don't really translate well when you switch over to 40k.The same really isn't true with the reverse, so I'd always recommend you start there.With regards as to what to play as, I'd honestly recommend Tyrannids. They're very generic, I know, but they're fair and a very good start for a new player. After 'nids, go IG or Ork and never look the fuck back.Every other race will have its canon screwed up at one point or another by our Spiritual Liege. Tragic, I know, but trust me. Playing Eldar or Necron or Marine will get you into some terrible arguments. Ignore them all together.
