In general I consider Gainax adaptations as jobs they take to pay the bills. The idea being they are sponsored, so they get steady pay even if the final product sucked. In the good old days Gainax simply create experimental original works in between their sucky adaptations.

It's like being an artist who paint billboards to pay the bills, but does "real art" in between. But who knows what Gainax is like nowadays.

Completely agree with you there. There are only few adaptation they did that weren't shit such as His and Her Circumstance (and even that show turns to shit in later episodes), Mahoromatic, and... I'm out.

I think it is really noticeable in this case because they are doing adaptation back-to-back for two seasons, Medaka this season and that-something-dandalion last season, and both of them are kinda, well, shitty.

I liked how they pretty much introduced all of the major plot points in the first episode, and then did all the reveals in the next scenes. No dragging out the obvious mystery bullshit that fans of these kind of shows already know.

I think the lesbian-based episodes dragged it down a lot more than they thought when they made it. They just dumped in something that didn't advance the plot or characters in any way. All it did was show that more people had real marks, which accomplished nothing overall.

Overall a fun show, but nothing more than a good show.

Sometimes I wonder if Rebuild is just the secret plan Gainax came up with, to update their shitty contract with the old sponsors of Evangelion.

To explain, Gainax didn't become famous until AFTER Eva. This meant that when they first signed the contract with their sponsors on how to split the sales and merchandise profits, Gainax got a raw deal. However, Eva was SO successful, that despite the shitty contract they were still swimming in money. However, this does mean for the last decade Gainax had been getting a much smaller cut from Eva money.

So what if Rebuild is just Anno's way to cancel the old contract? By simply replacing the canon outright with the film version, with redone characters and mecha, he could justifiably claim that Rebuild is a brand new show that doesn't fall into the area of the old contracts. Thus all the toys, figures, and books could then be far more profitable than before.

I think it's more that they get annoyed with the show being praised, not just because they can't enjoy it, but because they don't understand *why* they can't enjoy it, and feel excluded from the group who does. Especially when they saw themselves as a part of that group until that point.

It's in the interest of distribution companies to keep studios small so it's easier to twist their arms into bad deals. If your studio starts getting too big, you start getting bullied. Gainax might have been exercising the courage to betray their comrades so they could merge all the new studios into Tengen Toppa Gainax Lagann and put a drill through corporate Japan.
