About 11 years late. I'm officially high on this anime. Just a question though, what the hell did I watch.
Go back 11 years and ask then
Dicks.
A deconstruction of the coming-of-age anime
>Just a question though, what the hell did I watch.Eva thread?
A good show. You can be late to watch a bad show and miss good threads, but you can't be late to watch a good show in general.
A waste of time.
We've been over this COUNTLESS times. It's a show about sex.
A good show. A story about a kid growing up.
You watch a company take a paid vacation.
You watched Gainax telling a story about a boy growing up and Gainaxing the fuck out of it. Pretty simple, really.
It's about Western invasion into Japanese society. Mamimi, the "native girl", is the traditional Japanese anime scene, while Haruko represents the Yankee intrusion into the conventional forms of societal values.
>>63728469What?
>>63728297Just curious. What does "never knows best" suppose to mean? I've never caught on the significance of that phrase.
You watched a metaphor for sexual intercourse.Ming blowing, I know.
>>63728535It's a red herring. Doesn't mean anything, it's there to distract you.
>>63728532There's a big theory that it's not only a metaphor for a young boy's sexual awakening, but also Japan's post-WWII awakening.
The story of a kid growing up.A metaphor for normalcy and our own comfort levels.A deconstruction of the coming-of-age genre. An animation studio taking a break from working with a depressed Hideaki Anno.
I thought the message was that all women are bitches and whores and when you come of age, you learn that.
>>63728447what the fuck is that bear thing in the lower left?
>>63728535In the dvd commentary, the director said he saw that phrase in a postcard and included in the anime because (and solely because) it sounded cool.
>>63728683That's probably the same reason why Gainax do anything.
>>63728652No, I didn't learn that until I was 18.Naota's got a while before he figures out that one class rep is fucking both his best friends on the side.
>>63728658Seriously?/a/, you're better than thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BDW1V_P5sA
>>63728658I have no idea.
>>63728658it's the pillows' mascot
>>63728683Maybe I should try writing it on a cigarette and then die of ink poisoning or something.
>>63728704Isn't that the same as when that bitch was fucking his dad though.
>>63728737You smoke a modern cig, you're inhaling far worse than a bit of ink.
>>63728535It sounds cool.
>>63728737>ink poisoning.You are fucking retarded.
>>63728535I always thought it was wordplay on "father knows best"--but never instead of father, since this is a coming of age story.
>>63728802I think "mother knows best" is the more common phrase. And I also thought it had more to do with teenage angst than a fucking postcard.
In the manga, he kills his dad with the baseball bat. Sort of ties things together a bit more
>>63728783>modern cig
>>63728837"Father knows best" is a more common phrase in America.
Coming of age. It is one of my favorites though.
Why is she so lovely?
>>63728535Tsurumaki Kazuya:Oh, no.I'm not sure if it has a real meaning or not.How can I say it? Um...*in an explanatory manner* There's a best way, and not everyone can follow it.No one knows the best way.I thought it reflected Mamimi's belief that there's no future. That it had a nuance that said she's given up on life.
>>63729112Cool. That's what I thought too.
MEGANE NI HARITSUITERU YOU NI
>>63728702"because it sounded cool" is the reason for FLCL and TTGL
It's about how anime companies can piss as much pretentious crap in your mouth as they want and everyone will eat it up and call it DEEP.
Good show, better soundtrack.
>>63729077She's a slut. Look at those whore lips.
Feels like the show had a lot of experimenting with animation.Kinda why I liked P&S too.
>>63728713thanks for that.. i guess
>>63729205>>63729257I don't understand how people can say it's either: LOL SO DEEP AND EDGY while others JUST A BUNCH OF RANDOM SHITIt's neither. It was pretty obvious it was a coming of age story. It literally tells you, in the series.other than that, it is experimenting with animation styles and makes a bunch of anime references. that's it. it just does what it does really well
>>63729287Excellent soundtrack, imo. It made the anime much much more enjoyable for me.
>>63729367I'm aware of thatbut most of it is still "what would look cool" it's the reason I love Gainax
>>63729367>>63729505I think the show does have some merited profoundness to it, and not just some superficial elements.
Hey>>63729606>>63729367here,I agree with that completely. It's not the deepest show to ever be made, but I think there is a lot of great stuff to think about. It is one of my favorites.
>>63728535across the street from me this phrase is spray painted on a telephone box. it makes me shutter to think one of you is near me.someone has also turned a poster of a man thinking into a gendo pose in the laundry room...
>>63729748>shutterAre you a curtain.
Yo OP, I just saw it two weeks ago myself for the first time.I love the Pillows now.
>>63729935ma nigga
Just curious, is the manga exactly the same as anime? Should I read that shit too?
>>63730230They are the same. You don't have to read the manga.
>>63730230>>63730371I heard it's a little different and gives a little different emphasis. but I was reading part of one and the art was shit which was kind of annoying.
Shit show
