I think the spirit is still alive on 4chan, but it has suffered from the influx of newfags. It takes a certain type of people to create original content. These need to come together in a thread and contribute. If a community has too many outsiders of a different breed, often normalfags, then the chance for two people who could create something worthwhile gets smaller. The community gets diluted and less original content gets created. On the other hand, the uncreative people clod up the board with their uncreative threads, reposts of porn/pizza/feel/etc. - this happened to /b/, this happened to /v/.

I'm not too opposed to the 3DPD behaviour though - at least it keeps porn threads out of /a/, which is breeding ground for cancer. I didn't like the misogyny threads too much, since they felt too spiteful and angry to me, rather than the comforting ronery-threads which came before.
