Have to run an Anime Club at this place I work at. I'm be helping run other clubs too so it's not like I'm really into these kind of things. The problem is that the children I have to tend to are middle schoolers and I'm having trouble deciding what anime would be kid friendly, but entertaining enough that I won't get sued by angry parents. I work in an afterschool program.

Would you guys consider Ano Hana and Madoka appropriate for middle schoolers? I'm looking for any anime that's under 13 episodes and doesn't show too much violence, sex, drug use, or cussing.

I'll be serious here. Grab Fruits Basket for the female members and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for the Guys. Maybe even Lucky Star if you need to take up more time.

These aren't the greatest anime but they are easy to find,Dubbed and won't get the "Mizz Thang" mom on your ass.

No way in hell this is real, but it is interesting to consider.

Ano Hana, as much as I like the series, is pretty slow at times. The kids are doing this afterschool right? Is Ano Hana a show you can watch after a long day at school + with a bunch of other people around you? Personally shows like Ano Hana i'd prefer to watch alone. If it comes to emotional shit, being around with other people may lessen the impact of some parts of the anime. Just my 2 cents.

I say pick a series thats exciting enough to peak their interests in it even after theyre tired from school

Sounds a bit odd. Never really heard of an anime club in anything younger than highschool.

I can understand why you wouldn't wanna show Big 3 stuff, but that's probably the easiest thing you can show them. Other than that though, since im guessing they're not gonna wanna watch anything that isn't dubbed, You could try showing them a few Miyazaki movies if they haven't seen them already.

No? The violence and death actually happens and you do see it on screen. Madoka is a terrible choice because it's too dark and scary for the girls, yet too feminine with the character designs for little 12 year old boys to watch. You need something mostly lighthearted that will satisfy both audiences, so if you have to make a choice between the two then pick AnoHana. Maybe they'll enjoy the melodrama, who knows. Angel Beats could fit too in that regard.

Here's a slightly unethical solution: bring up your concerns with the school regarding the difficulty of finding age appropriate anime.

You are a single individual who has to do other things. It should not be your job to go through each show the kids want to watch/discuss and determine if it is too violent/obscene/sexual/deep for them.

Basically: play the "anime is tentacle porn" card.

Tiger and Bunny is a surprisingly alright choice.

When I was in middle school though, Read or Die, Outlaw Star and Big O were already airing, right? Those seem like quite fine shows. Big O's got about as much death as a more serious episode of Batman, I'd say. Gene Starwind might be too much man for those kids to handle, though. Uh...R.O.D. is good, but the president does piss himself in the first OVA.

Solution: you choose the anime. Every time they're going to watch one, a week before you send a paper to the parents, and they have to sign if they confirm it's for them okay to watch the anime. You describe it a little i.e "violence is absent in this anime etc.." that way they can't really sue you.

Naruto. Seriously. Other shonen anime would work too. If they can enjoy other anime besides shonen, then your options are pretty much limitless.
If you can make it 26 episodes, I would recommend something like blue exorcist, tiger and bunny, code geass, guilty crown.
If you can do movies, redline might work. Its short enough too.
If it has to be a 13 episode series, the best choice is probably some comdey like baka to test, nichibros, or FLCL.

Didn't occur to me, but others answered.

If it is grade 6-9, then standard shonen should be fine. If it is primarily dominated by boys, show Super Robot shows and Buso Renkin. Girls, show stuff that will keep the boys interested still, like Ouran Highschool Host Club, Ruroni Kenshin. Maybe the occasional Seinen like Tiger & Bunny would be good as well.

In all seriousness, it's a tough position to be put in where you can't even show the big 3. Can you get permission slips or something? It seems a little ridiculous.

The only thing I can think of is like:
    Usagi Drop
    Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu
    Eve no Jikan
Daily Lives of High School Boys (? I forget if it's got sexual jokes in there)

and that list was pretty hard to create from stuff I find interesting. It might not even be to their tastes (in fact, I suspect it isn't)

If you can get permission slips or can show ROMANCE (note: cute romance not sexual innuendo or graphic scenes) or SOME violence (not completely graphic) you can try these out:
    Bakuman
    Darker Than Black
Kamisama no Memo-chou (I don't think people die in this, though I don't really remember honestly)
    Lovely Complex
    Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi
    Toradora!

some of these are pretty ambiguous, sorry about that, but the first list SHOULD be good no matter what.

For boys, action and explosions, preferably with giant robots. Gurren lagann and g gundam would be perfect. For girls, some light hearted romance or drama would probobly be best.

But like the other anon said, get permission slips that specifically state what you will be showing so the parents can look it up themselves, even though most will just blindly sign it. And who knows, maybe no one will sign it and youll get out of this responsibility.

But most importantly, ASK THE DAMN KIDS AND NOT AN ANONYMOUS IMAGE BOARD WHAT OR WHAT KINDS OF SHOWS THEY WANT TO WATCH. Some of them probobly have stuff to share, just do a quick look up of it before showing it.

As for the people saying Ano Hana, FUCK NO. Maybe the girls might like it but I doubt the boys will. Also I don't think its a good idea to show them something that will probably make them cry.

But, finding a series under 13 episodes that would entertain a children of both sexes without violence or sexual refferences provide a sort of challenge head-strong, egotistical elitists like /a/ can't help but want to conquer.

    This.

I played Spirited Away for a class of 6th graders, and many of them told me it was the greatest thing that they've ever watched.

As much as I hate to recommend dubbed animu to anyone, Miyazaki's films are really good for all age groups.

Yeah, dubbed anime would be the preference. I don't mind subs.

I'm playing some subs on a wide screen TV right now as a test. The subs would be kind of small.

I'm going to hate myself forever for recommending this... but the fate/stay night anime might be a good choice. It cut all the 18+ content from the eroge, its a bit bloody but not that bad, and it could have some appeal for both the girls and boys. It also could, later on when they're older, get them involved in the other type moon stuff.

Someone mentioned asking the kids. Ask them about things that are not airing on tv though. You could get a decent list of series from there. You could also ask them what are their favorite series and then according to what they said, pick something similar for them to watch (chances are that they will say Naruto).

It aired on NHK-Educational, so it's not something parents will get up in arms about, many of the characters are around their age, there's plenty of humor, (bloodless) action, cool future gadgets, and an exciting plot towards the end. Going through the HDD that's currently plugged in...

Dennou Coil. Action without "real" violence, great plot and characters of the right age, everyone loves cool gadgets these days.

Haibane Renmei. Probably not enough action to work by itself, but showing it with something else would work. The religious symbolism is purely stylistic and should be fine unless you're in southern America or something.

Nanoha. The fanservice isn't really noticeable unless you know what to expect, and it has mahou shoujo for the girls and lasers for the boys. Makes a good jumping-off point for other shows in the genre.

Last Exile. Strong characters, nothing objectionable in the content that I can remember.

Ika Musume. Might work if they can handle the Sanagay. There's worse in normal western children's cartoons for that age, right?

Read or Die. Again, strong characters and action/SoL mix to suit all tastes with mostly ignorable fanservice. And reading is FUNdamental! Nancy's reference to pornography in the OVAs might be an issue?

Hyakko. One of the more "stuff actually happens" CGDCT anime, almost like a Western cartoon, so that might work.

And depending on how harsh the "no violence" thing works out as (seriously, there's way worse on normal TB), any number of action-y anime like Geass, DtB, or one of the girls-with-guns trilogy.
