I never thought that I would say that, but IMHO Cardcaptor Sakura is first anime worth description of being "wise" or at least educational. You know how every mahou shojo, no, wait - every anime aimed at shojo/shonen and often even at seinen audience has things like "power of friendship", "believe in yourself" etc.? Yeah, that's pretty bland and often forgettable message that pretty much always drowns in sea of stupidity and contradictions.

And now I got to this series - 31 episodes in 3 or 4 days, excellent watch with really nice oldschool doesn't impair fluidity and dynamics of motion animation, warm atmosphere that isn't over-the-top "sparkles&bubbles" like in Precure, setting that seems very...well, real, as well as simple motivations and behaviour of heros with whom you could easily sympathize. All in all, those elements still doesn't make it as I called it "educational" - what is really first class and what I haven't saw in series I watched and I watched my share of them is how simple "monster of the week" formula is intertwined into daily lives of characters, how there's very distinct sense of continuity between, even quite distant, episodes and how fun dealing with, often simple, obstacles can be. Obstacles that are...well, real trouble sometimes.

I just wanted to say - thanks /a/, it's wonderful series. I know I will probably never reproduce, but I'd consider giving this series to my children if I would have any.

There's a reason why this show is loved and you explained a great deal why.

You've got some good taste, anon.

Lots of people bring up classics as being shows like Cowboy Bebop or DBZ, but CCS will always be the number one for me.

It´s great, It was the best thing CLAMP created, try reading Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle and XXXholic now.

    Read, don't watch the anime.

    Excellent taste, /a/non.

CCS is what got me hooked on anime, and it remains my favourite to this day. I know exactly how you feel.

You know it's ironic when the only good anime CLAMP was involved is the one where their ridiculous Noodle anatomy isn't featured

Too bad Tsubasa cocked it all up.

Ah well OP as much as I agree with your description of CCS, Revolutionary Girl Utena aired a year earlier and that's also what I would call an 'intelligent' mahou shoujo.

If I ever have a girl I'm going to make her watch both.
    >> walw6pK4Alo !!Dad2zlG9Cj3 03/26/12(Mon)08:31 No.63310341
Yeah, I just started blasting through it too, after the Illusion episode where Sakura wears her hands-down best outfit. CLAMP is all over the place in quality of their stories, but at least for CCS, tons of credit to Madhouse for making a really damn good looking show when most anime for kids even at that time still looked like ass. Some episodes, like The Silent one, did some really nice stuff with angles, moonlight, and darkness in the museum. There's a clear directorial vision put into the scene composition, again very rare for children's anime.

I downloaded 66.3GB 720p pack from Coalgirls which includes 70 episodes, 2 movies and 3 specials. IMHO it was worth it, I was amazed at how nice motion of Sakura on her roller-skates is. Visuals of cards are also often quite fancy, so all in all if you don't mind having torrent run for about 3 days - go for it.
    >> Anonymous 03/26/12(Mon)08:39 No.63310528
CCS, back when CLAMP was still good.

    >>63310340
Well Utena isn't exactly for kids so there's a difference.

I downloaded the 80gb for the 70 episodes in 1080p and the CG movies which end up being about 23gbs. Quality difference is basically unnoticable, but it's still worth it.

At least go with the 720p. The BluRay really highlights a lot of the little things on the cels, like little gaps in the linework, but the backgrounds really stick out.

    >>63310419

I noticed the roller skates too, then noticed a lot of reused animation for a few episodes, like when she takes the corner, or when she does her little spin the camera tilted up with the sakura trees in bloom above her. Still nice, though.
    >> Anonymous 03/26/12(Mon)08:51 No.63310792
    >>63310657

You are right, although I never had a sense of it being a very cheap move, scenes that had reused animation were often quite different from original, or at least had some frames that nicely clouded repeatability of them. Oh, and animation with Sakura growing to the size of telephone pole was in 1 episode and I never saw it again until a beginning of 31, so all in all I don't consider it a major flaw that I would see somewhere else.

    >>63310792

Yeah, it's nothing big. It's not egregious reuse of animation like your typical mahou shoujo transformation sequence, or when they go through the motions of a special attack. Every card capture is different, from different angles, with Sakura wearing different clothes.
