To what extent do you hide your powerlevel?

I don't need to, I'm socially inept to the point where people rarely notice me.

I don't hide my powerlevel, but I don't go around broadcasting that I just so happen to enjoy a lot of things made in Japan like an idiot weaboo or an over enthusiastic otaku. Very few people notice that and even less than that will resort to calling me a Japanophile or some stupid shit like that. In the circle of people I'm around the most, they simply do not care.

I don't "hide" anything. It just never comes up during normal conversation and social interaction. If it comes up, I give a level of input appropriate to the situation and leave it at that.

So I guess what I'm saying is that the best way to hide your powerlevel is to not be a raging faggot about your enjoyment of Chinese cartoons.

Not at all. I'll talk about anime and games with others, if I'm asked or if it's relevant. Why should I hide it? I'm not ashamed. If I try hiding it, it just makes the hobby appear to be a shameful one, perpetuating the stereotype. Fuck that, man. Out and proud.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/12(Sun)18:49 No.62642627
I don't. I get shipments from Japan quite often, parents don't give a shit about what I do as long as I keep doing well in school, and eventually get them grandkids. Though, they don't really know about anime, as everything I import is music. As for everyone else, I don't bring it up unless it comes up in conversation or shit, and it isn't a problem then.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/12(Sun)18:51 No.62642727
I don't hide it but I don't mention it for no reason either. My family doesn't even know. If they asked I would not lie but I don't see why they would ask. My friends do know since they also have relatively high power levels.

I have little social interaction so I have no need to hide my power level.

Typically, when asked about my hobbies, anime doesn't come up in conversation unless the other party mentions it, though. Then, I probe them to see just how much of a fan they are.

Otaku are the lowest chain on the social ladder in Japan and any anime outside of classics and kids shows are associated with them.

You will be ridiculed to hell just by saying you like anime.

I still don't understand why so many "weaboos" want to go to Japan so much when you would still have to pretend to be a normalfag.

The only exception is Akihabara which is called "ghetto for otaku".

    I don't

Every day in the morning when taking the London underground I make certain to take out my beastly Dell XPS 17'' laptop because it is portable, turn the speakers up to max volume, and engage myself in an episode or two (depending on how long the journey is) of Naruto or One Piece.
If I get any weird stares I just stare them right back down. If people tell me to turn the sound off or use headphones I growl at them and that usually makes them back away.
To immerse myself more fully in the spirit of watching anime and to embrace the cultural roots of Japan I wear my ninja headband proudly (hidden village of fire of course) and have several replica ninja shurikens and kunai strapped to my legs. I like to scream out 'Dattebayo' whenever Naruto says it because it is so cool and I like practicing my Japanese.
What have I got to hide? One day I will leave this shit country which doesn't accept my love of anime and all things Japan and move over to Japan and live there watching anime 24/7 and it will be good because everyone watches anime there and no one looks down on it.

    Itadakimasu.

I'm a graduate research assistant in computer engineering and there is a really bad perception around the department about the nerdy/gamer kids. I think I landed the position I'm in because they figured "here's a normal serious guy who doesn't waste time on bullshit like games and comics", so I don't want to ruin that perception of me.

Also the area I live in is almost completely devoid of anime fans. Like, anime just hasn't reached my geographic region yet or something. You can't even buy it (not that I'd want to). There are nothing but REALLY bad perceptions about anime around here.

I browsed through an appliance store. There was a cute little girl who was trying to pet a Japanese roomba-like thing (not roomba brand, but some kind of disc-shaped vacuum cleaner robot). It was operating on a platform raised a few inches off the ground. Due to a coincidence in its programming, when she bent down, it suddenly got stuck in the corner she was in and kept moving up to the edge, so it looked like it was trying to get to her as she was petting it. Because she was a little kid, all my years of anime-watching allowed me to understand what she was saying. ("KAWAII! KAWAII! KAITAI!")

I felt sad for the kid. She must not be able to have a pet in her tiny Japanese apartment, and so instead her affection was directed towards a lifeless piece of plastic. Of course her parents didn't buy her the thing.

    Oh boy here we go

Otaku originally meant 'you' at start, but because it was 'you' in a sense where 'I don't know you that well', and most anime fans didn't have friends, they called everyone around them otaku, that's how anime fans became otaku.

So the word otaku became anime fan, but then there were other hardcore fan that acted like anime fan(collection, arguing about it for hours) so Otaku became a word that means 'hardcore fan'.

But outside of Japan, that word just means 'anime fan'.

Almost. As an archaic and overly formal second person form, it literally means "Your household"; it was rescued from obscurity in the 1950s by science fiction fan groups making excessively timid approaches to other like minded groups. It moved over to anime because of the overlap between SF and anime fans (Gainax being a well known example of SF fans turned animators).

However I am an absolute social retard on the inside and I don't really care about social relationships.

So people get wrong impression of me and "nerdy bros" whom I would like to befriend see me as that "alpha bro" who fucks chicks every night.

The problem is the area I live in has no anime fans, so it wouldn't make much positive impact on my social life if I was "out" about it, just the negative perceptions of my colleagues and professors.

I will admit to having a lot of cognitive dissonance about being into anime/manga as a result of hiding my powerlevel. Though that's only part of it, the other half is being unable to relate with any "geek culture" at all - I.E. I don't like any of the axillary shit that typically comes with anime fandom; the music, con/club scene, the fans, I don't play any games, etc. I probably shouldn't even be hanging out on 4chan anymore.

I mean - I'm a complete fucking normalfag, aside from being virgin and not having much of a social life. My other hobbies are like hiking / backpacking, cycling, and programming. I have my own place, financial security, etc.

Do you get a lot of weird looks wearing it?

As for the OPs question I do what any normal person would do. I don't talk about it unless someone brings it up and even then I make sure not to completely reveal myself. If I hear someone talking about big 3 stuff I just ignore them like any normal person.

I have actually managed to talk about anime with a couple other people, but none of them have a very high powerful. There is one person I know who just recently got into it, and I give him recommendations and get him to watch currently airing shows. The only problem is he talks about it all the time and is obsessed with Japan.

I also know a normalfag guy who likes hentai, but isn't into anime. He's even open about it, and people freak out or make fun of him when he tells them. I'd like to give him recommendations so he stops watching poorly animated stuff and sees all the good H manga out there, but it'd feel weird.

I woke up, went down stairs and he was just laying there asleep. He was breathing at least so i didn't think about it. I went back up stairs and i heard my mom get up and scream. I ran down stairs and she said he was dead. I beat myself up so many times thinking "Why didn't I notice anything" The EMT's said we could have saved him if we called 10 mins earlier. I don't blatantly show it, that's all I do.

I have an anime background on my ipod, that's all people see regarding me and anime.

Some people I know saw me buying manga, asked me if I was buying cartoon porn, said "nah".
    They forgot about it.

No one cares about what you like if you don't make a big deal about it.

I don't. The difference between me and many others is that I'm not a weeaboo about it. I don't flaunt it at every second of the day and speak broken japanese. I don't show every person my cool kawaii anime bag with 20 anime key chains. I only bring it up when it is brought up. Otherwise, I hush about. Most of my co-workers know I'm an anime fan. They don't give a fuck because I don't act all weeaboo about it. Another co-worker is also an anime fan. She acts all weeaboo about it. It's why she's the butt end of all the office jokes.

    >So what hobbies do you have?
I hate this question so much because the only thing I do aside from watching anime, reading manga or vns, and wasting my time on /a/ is running. It's almost impossible to talk to someone about that, and it sounds weird if I say that's the only thing I do.

My family also asks me why I don't have a girlfriend every now and then which kind of sucks. They never ask my older sister why she's never had a boyfriend though.

Like I said, Bleach was my entry anime. Are otaku's all "too cool" to keep watching the show that introduced them to the whole culture? Because I believe that's a bit sad.

And I like moe, I just think the shows that pander solely to moe are rubbish. Shows these days are just rehashes of rehashed rehashes
Also fuck you, Persona is great.

During the lunch break that breaks up 8 hours of lec's/tut's, I sometimes watch anime if I stay in the room since all the lectures are there.

I was watching Haganai where Rika showed up, and someone wanted to ask me something, so I paused it right where she said "Do you want to have sexual intercourse with Rika?"

My classmates behind and beside me were laughing like crazy but I played it cool and acted like I didn't give a fuck. Not like I need their approval, anyway.

    >> Anonymous 03/11/12(Sun)20:13 No.62645756
Meh, I rarely bother hiding it. My closer friends are all aware that I have some special interests. They don't give a shit as long as I flaunt my animu interests infront of them.
My parents are really cool with it. They're all for cultural diversity, and consider my animu interests a part of that.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/12(Sun)20:13 No.62645757
I never mention that I watch anime because I have a low power level and I'm afraid that I'd end meeting some Big 3 faggot that I don't want to talk too, or that I'd meet a bro and embarrass myself by not being able to keep up in a conversation.

    I open about vidya, though.
    >> Anonymous 03/11/12(Sun)20:13 No.62645761
I'm in the fortunate situation where a lot of my friends are complete weeaboos, i.e.: Japanese majors, anime watchers, going to cons, etc. So I never had to do much in terms of power level hiding when I'm around them.
I do hide the fact that I watch anime from my parents though, because I'm pretty sure they think it's a complete waste of time.
With other people I don't really talk about anime related things, since the topic never really comes up in the discussions.

Don't need to hide mine. People don't give a shit as long as you don't flaunt it and push it down people's throats like many gays like to flaunt around that they're homosexuals. Otherwise, people don't really care. They may ask curious questions, but nothing major.
