So the Bleach anime has been cancelled. And right in the middle of a non-filler arc, too.

Combined with the manga's sharp drop in sales, this pretty much disqualifies Bleach from being in the big three anymore. What series should replace it?

Last time I checked, the big 3 in Japan were One Piece at top, followed by Toriko and Naruto and Gintama fighting closely for third. Granted, that was like, in August of last year, so I think anything can happen now. All I know is that Toriko is picking up steam fast in moonland.

That's not how the big three works. They're not supposed to be jumps best 'selling manga', but rather the flagship series that made it successfull. I don't have the numbers to back it up, but I'm fairly certain that Naruto, One Piece and Bleach aren't all in the top three spot and haven't been for quite a while.

Hollywood will make any piece of shit into a movie.

Bleach is on the final arc, and the anime is ENDING.

Have you seen the ratings for the Bleach manga? Have you seen how far the sales for DVDs and the manga volumes have dropped? Have you seen how few people actually WATCH the anime now?

Less people watch Bleach than Hitman Reborn, and D.Gray Man when THEY were cancelled, it is fucked.

It's only lasted this long because it has been a WSJ Juggernaut, and they didn't want to let it go, but if they'd cancel D.Gray Man and Hitman with MORE people watching those than Bleach, they'll definitely let go of Kubo's "master" work.

    Bleachfag in denial.

What happened with Gintama is incredibly rare. And it happened because sales of the manga and DVD's stayed strong.

With Bleach, the opposite is happening. The manga's sales have dropped significantly and the DVD's aren't selling either. Jump is suddenly signaling that the series is wrapping up despite no prior indication that the plot was heading toward a conclusion.

In other words, Jump has lost faith in the franchise and is looking to push it out of the way, probably to give more of the spotlight to its rising star Toriko.

Aizen's defeat would have been the perfect place to end the anime. It wraps everything up.

Actually, I think part of the reason the manga's sales have tanked is because the pre-timeskip ending was so damn conclusive. It makes everything after the timeskip feel like unnecessary padding.

Because despite the fact Toriko is goofy and ridiculous, it is a genuinely entertaining and fun manga series that does not take itself too seriously. It knows what it is, it KNOWS it is over the top and doesn't try to be anything other than a highly entertaining, ridiculous adventure that keeps the readers entertained.

Also, no "DARKNESS" bullshit, the characters' motives are pretty clear, and no one is filled with omni-dark pasts and enough teenage angst to put the Disney Channel to shame.

It's goofy and over the top, but it is over the top DONE WELL, and it deserves to be pushed. It is FAR better than Naruto and Bleach ever were.

Also, no overly "sexy," male characters designed specifically to draw in morbidly obese women writing yaoi fanfictions.

Obviously they will still find a way, but it is not filled with nearly as much faggotry as Naruto and Bleach.

Also, the author solicited sex from a sixteen year old girl, so you know he's awesome.

    picture unrelated.

The whole post-timeskip thing smacks of desperation.

I think Kubo saw the huge attention and sales One Piece was getting with its timeskip and said "OOOH ME TOO!" So he tried out Oda's "big climatic battle and then timeskip" idea.

But he forgot that Oda left a ton of subplots unresolved when he did his OP timeskip. Kubo resolved EVERYTHING before doing his timeskip, so there was no reason for readers to come back. It felt fake and unnecessary.

You can actually see Bleach's sales drop sharply after the last Aizen volume. A lot of fans decided to treat that as the ending.

He didn't resolve everything, but the stuff he left unresolved was too boring and vague for people to care about.

Oda was smart because he split up the crew, and didn't bring them back together until after the timeskip. Since everyone wanted to see the crew back together again, it got people to keep reading.

Kubo didn't give us anything to come back for except some vague mentions of a Spirit King and Squad 0, neither of which were given enough context to be interesting.

Actually, the timing on those is a little off. Rurouni Kenshin began when DB was ending, and Jump lost a huge number of readers when DB ended. Kenshin brought some of them back when it got popular, but it ended right around the time that One Piece began hitting it big.

Kenshin doesn't belong in either of the big three, but in a class by itself. It basically kept Jump alive as its only big franchise inbetween the end of the DB/YYH era and the start of the One Piece/Naruto era.

Actually, One Piece is one of the few Shounen in WSJ I can tolerate right now.

I really like how Oda advanced the scope of the series naturally and how varied the locations are. World-building is great.

Just like how One Piece turned to shi-- oh wait, One Piece is still pretty fucking entertaining.

The thing is that Toriko started better and IS better than Bleach and Naruto EVER were, ever since the very beginning.

I honestly feel as though it has far more potential than either.

The reason I enjoy One Piece and Toriko so much is because their different approaches in the worldbuilding achieve the same effect. Oda comes up with his stuff on his own, making it all have the same feel. Shimabakuro has been adding more and more fan creations which I feel adds a whole lot more, since the entire world of Toriko leaves itself thousands of potential animals and plants.

One Piece introduces new technology or resources(dials) and keeps them relevant even later, but Toriko can just shove aside new ingredients and such because it is essentially an arms race of cooking. Both manage to blend them correctly and create really engaging worlds.
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)04:16 No.61849487
    >>61849173
Toriko's premise is just too pants-on-head retarded. Martial artists, yes, pirates, yes, ninjas, yes, hunters, yes, shinigami, yes, Death Notes, OK. But food? No. Gourmets do not make a good basis for world building.
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)04:19 No.61849536
    >>61849394

I agree completely with everything you said; Naruto is just our world with different technology levels, and ninjas. Bleach is our world with ghosts.

Toriko and One Piece create their own unique, truly fascinating, and engrossing worlds that give us a real sense of exploration and wonder.

The sense of EXPLORATION, and wanting to see more is what makes it great.

Wanting to see more of the Grand Line in OP, and wanting to see the Gourmet World in Toriko are what make each manga series amazing.

I wonder how much advice Oda gave the creator of Toriko before he conceived the series; I know they are pretty good friends.

I personally take that one chapter introduction we got of the Gourmet world about a year ago as Shimabakuro basically saying to Oda "You've hyped up the New World for years: beat this."

And 3 chapters into this new arc...we have
-an island half burning and half frozen
    -fucking samurai
-a talking pair of legs and a severed talking head
    -a dragon
    -a harpy
    -scientific guinea pig kidnappers
    -giant babies
    -MOTHERFUCKING DRAGONS
-promise of Smoker on the horizon

    >>61849487
It is hard to take seriously...bu food is like, an absolutely necessary thing. Ninja, piracy, samurai-y, that's just lifestyle. Food is mandatory, and making a world focused on the most godlike foods in all of history...it leads to sort of an interesting and varied world.
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)04:27 No.61849679
    >>61849487

So pirates who eat magic fruit, have snail telephones, and magic floating islands are okay...

But a world based around cooking and gourmet food is not?

What the fuck is wrong with it being based around food? I honestly can't fathom why anyone would have an issue with the series being bent around exotic ingredients, and a global economy fully controlled by the market of said ingredients and cooking.

It allows for worldbuilding, and an interesting, adventurous story, and a unique premise without having to rely on the whole, "Oh, evil bad guys, oh we're just fighting and shit because we like to fight."

It's fun seeing the ingredients, and most shonen manga have ridiculous premises in the first place, why the fuck should Toriko bother you?

Would you HONESTLY rather read a generic manga about ninjas or ghost warriors with big swords over Toriko? Seriously?

Don't judge it by the premise, judge it by entertainment value.
