However, that works only for a short while... the next generations become immune.
The worst outcome would be if they discovered a deadly virus that takes time to show its effects. Given it's an isolated place, the bacteria and possible viruses must have taken that way of survival - by being slow in devouring their victim.

I'd still think second impact is a more likely explanation though than that bacteria that have been living in an extremely cold lake for millions of years turn out to be well-adapted enough to survive and destroy warm human bodies in spite of the immune system.


Even if its something new, the immune system is pretty robust. When it's developing it pretty much tries to produce cells to produce every different possible antibody it can, then stops producing the ones which attack its own cells.
