The other thing I've heard is that they are going to push very hard to ensure that the old system is grandfathered in for any members of the military before any changes are made to the system.

There's a good chance your sergeant was probably told they need to start cutting back and figured that's an effective method to get people to drop out without sticking around too long. The military really is stretched fairly thin right now, as far as financial resources are concerned. They are, after all, just another branch of the federal government.

I think those expectations are a bit extreme for the Air Force. USMC is the toughest basic training, and I think that it'd scare more than prepare. Though if I had to suggest an accurate portrayal of basic training, I'd suggest Ears, Open, Eyeballs, Click. It's also USMC, but it's fly-on-the-wall with no narration or MCs, just "Watch these guys go through boot camp". Also more intense than AF basic, but it leaves out all the choking and stuff a you see in FMJ.
