I ran the 'Anime Club' in my high school for 2 years. I supplied all the Anime and handled all the setup for the room/teacher, etc. And this was back in 1999-2002.

We didn't have many members, but most of the ones we did have were thankful to watch free Anime. But of course we had a few idiots who always wanted me to show nothing but Cowboy Bebop and Mononokehime. As if we hadn't all seen it 50 times.

Only went the one time but it honestly wasn't that bad. The only thing that annoyed me was when people laughed at the stupid jokes but I didn't, but that tends to happen when I watch anything with anyone else.

Well, this 3dpd and her boyfriend also happened to have good taste BUT were the most elitist snobby faggots to ever exist. We invited them to hang out and eat wings and burgers and watch anime with myself and my two bros just once. They made it fucking miserable. all they did was talk shit about the subs, say that one of the guys who is "new" to anime (he isn't new but he is underexposed, not being a big computer user he was only using netflix and dubs, we've since corrected that behavior) shit the whole time because she decided that she didn't like him. needless to say, they have never been invited again.

Just remember guys, no matter how good the taste may seem to be, never talk with 3dpd.

Back in the 90s, it was. Friends and I would get together just to watch Anime. But the reason for that was, it was hard to find any Anime outside of niche VHS rental places or the internet. It wasn't until around 1999-2000 when things like mIRC and hotline took off that we could download Anime and really start obtaining more than could be seen.

But yes, I did grow up in the late 80s and early 90s and have a pretty negative view of the quality of dubs. I've been watching subtitled only Anime since about 1994 and on.

Not to say I didn't hear the dubs still. Oh god, the horror of the Ranma 1/2, Saber Marionette J or Slayers dubs.....

I joined for one day. Why did I pay a bit of money for the one day? I was put up to it by a friend.

So, there I was, talking away to someone about how Code Geass wasn't good, but I enjoyed it beacuse it was fun anyway. He agreed and was all, "FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME." Then everyone made a joke about how I better watch myself, so I made a subtle rape joke.

He then went deadly silent and spoke about how he was sent to court for raping someone, but he hadn't. He lost all of his friends and everyone else because of it, but you could tell in regards to his bitterness that he spoke the truth - he didn't do it.

The club was eerily silent that day.
