It started when I went to uni about 6 years back. Before then I had only had exposure to anime on adult swim, the first season of Naruto that I downloaded off limewire and Love Hina which I watched on some stream site. I'm from 2005, but we've been saying /a/ sucks for a while now.

Personally, /a/ was quite drastically different by the time the /a/-/jp/ split happened. It was already pretty different from when I started, but the huge surge of posters in the year prior really changed the tone of the board.

I participated in moaning and talking about how I want to go back to better days at that time too, but I've gotten to the point where I don't really give a damn anymore. I have a brain filter that ignores everything I don't like. It just means I read only a small fraction of the board once in a while.

On a different note, anyone else remember being called new for not being here since 2003? I don't think I've even seen anyone from 2003 in the last 4 years.

This is how I've felt for a long time. Honestly, I think the major downfall came from two things: posting speed and lack of initiative.

In the beginning this place was in large part populated by people who had photoshop and knew how to use it (for the most part). Most likely because of the roots in Something Awful, where they still have fantastic photoshop threads to this day. As time goes on, more people joined that weren't capable of creating new content and that also had the side effect of making /b/ move so fast that there isn't even enough time to make a decent contribution to a thread there. Now 4chan is so massive that it has spread to many of the other boards.

Lurk more meant more than "learn our memes," it also meant learn how we create them and how to contribute meaningfully. People have lost that these days. Honestly, how many of you reading this actually try to make new things for the board instead of just reposting other stuff?
