So,
after watching 00, SEED (and Destiny), Wing, and a bit of Unicorn, I've
finally decided to backtrack into UC, starting with the original.
Its
pretty good. I didn't like the animation at first, but it's grown on
me. But there's something I've been thinking about as I watched it. I
know you guys have probably talked a lot about how the Zeon and
Federation are portrayed, and I know that it's more realistic for both
sides to have good and bad qualities, but it seems like they really went
out of their way to make the Federation look like a bunch of douches.
They say early on that the Zeon are basically vying for world
domination, but then they go on to show almost every Zeon soldier and
officer as being likable or understandable; examples include Ramba Rhal,
Char (though he's an exception), and those guys that planted bombs on
the Gundam (and happily watched as Amuro slowly disarmed them).
Meanwhile a lot of the Federation characters we're introduced to are
either tightasses or even incompetent. This of course excludes the White
Base crew, but they technically weren't Federation to begin with..
It's
weird. I like a show that tries for more than just "good and evil", but
this one clearly went out of its way to make the audience constantly
feel like them and the White Base might been allied with the wrong side.
Pic is somewhat unrelated, but it's from the episode I just finished. |
