/co/mrade here. What are some anime-type-things that aren't geared towards the obsessive fan market? Stuff that you can watch without wondering why 10-year-old girls have D-cup breasts that defy gravity, and without having to claw out your ear drums from the filler too-cool-for-school dialogue?

FLCL features a pedophilie fantasy of an underaged child lusting after an older person and Cowboy Bepop features a vulnerable brown girl wearing only short-shorts and a halter top

Both are acts of violence against the most vulnerable in our society

This is some weird misconception you have here. Little girls in anime are generally flat. In fact I can't think any little girl with huge breasts.

You know, stuff like South Park, which isn't necessarily family-friendly, and the animation is obviously minimal, but it's still really funny.

Or stuff like Venture Bros that, despite being crazy and over the top, still tells touching stories.

But really Manga is the more popular and socially acceptable medium and has been for quite a while, thanks to Moeshit and other embarrasing pandering.

There's a surprising amount of the more serious stuff, of course there is some amount of fanservice in most of them but it's not like western comic books don't have fanservice.
Anyway, Berserk is a great example, you could also try FMA, Beck or Yotsuba&.

If you want clever writing than you aren't going to find it here. The appeal of anime is in the depth of the story telling and characterizations, as well as the artwork. Japanese doesn't translate very well to English, and all-in-all I think the character dialogue is normally pretty flat and repetitive. Japanese humor will generally fall into the categories of slap-stick/toilet humor, lolPUNS, and straight up bizarre, which sometimes doesn't appeal to people and generally isn't what I would consider "clever".

You'd be better off looking for a drama or an action anime. I think a combination of the two is generally where you find the best stories and characters. Comedy anime can have it's own appeal too, but it won't be what you are used to.

If you want something as good as Venture Bros in anime form, you're at a loss from the start.

Anime is more like... a collection of bad shows that you don't mind being bad.

Baccano! is a good show, it's kind of like superpowers in 1920's america, or something.

Black Lagoon is ok? Although it has battle maids and shit, but it's sensible about it.

Former /co/mrade here, mostly cruising /a/ now (still loving cartoons, though).

If cute stuff isn't your thing, I'd go for the stuff I watched when I got introduced to anime:

FLCL (best anime ever, fuck the haters)
    Evangelion (still a must see)
    Planetes (if you're into sci-fi)
Kino no Tabi (philosophical themes, pretty deep)
    Serial Experiments Lain (multi-layered mindfuck)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (don't let the magical girls stuff decieve you - it's epic, violent and dsturbing)

I wouldn't go for stuff like Azumanga Daoih, Nichijou or Hidamari Sketch before you get interested in slice of life themes (you will, eventually)

That's a lot of wisdom summed up in one post.
Western humor is very different then Japanese Humor so like this guy said, you should stick to shows that aren't strictly humor.
If you want some light-hearted action there's always Full Metal Alchemist and if you want something light then read Yotsuba& which feels like reading an awesome cartoon.
