In CS1, Mike Z was angrier than anyone, because he actually said that CS1 Tager was worse than CT Tager. Going by tier lists alone this is untrue but he sort of had a point in that CS1 Tager was a shit character. Have you ever played Hazama vs. Tager at any high level?

CS2 rolled around. I'm sure none of us missed the BB Evo where Mike Z was completely unable to fight a Hazama player, to the point where he just gave up and let the guy astral him(this was the famous TAGER INFINITE match too).

Tager is balls.

But he's not really the only reason BB's a bad game. Might change in Extend but it's too late, I'm done with BB and most of the American BB community is pretty sick of it too.

BB isn't unbalanced it's just very boring.
It has a lot of mechanics but they're all shallow.
Example: Even though people on /v/ call elitism when someone compares GG and BB, just look at the BB tension bar compared to the GG tension bar. In GG you got tension for moving forward, encouraging offensive play. It also meant that if you played offensively, you did not even necessarily have to hit your opponent to have meter to play around with. This totally changed the meter dynamics and made it completely different from every other fighting game.

Then you had the fact that Faultless Defend was tied to your meter, so offensive play also aided you in opening up a powerful defensive option, which you could not abuse as it was tied to your offense.

In BB, you gain meter by hitting the other guy, and also by parrying, meaning that you can sit back and parry until you have enough to dead angle out of everything. Almost every BB character is a rushdown character of some type, with their only real options being to rush down to deal damage. The fact that you only gain meter by hitting the other guy exacerbates inequalities because now you have characters with exceedingly different tools, who are forced to duke it out within a limited set of meter parameters and since the game just has 1 playstyle the differences in their tools is highlighted while overcoming them is harder than it shoudl be. You have a barrier block, which runs off its own dedicated meter so it requires less effort to manage.

There's a lot more shit I could say but basically fuck BB.

If you ever played the game you would realize that BB tier lists were fucking glib since in reality stuff like Tager vs. Makoto or Tager vs. Hazama were nearly unwinnable.

I remember the Tager-Makoto matchup was supposedly not that bad because Tager could just 2C any one of her "disappear and reappear hi-lo-mid" moves, but it did not fucking matter because Makoto players barely use that as mixup if ever and can just chip at Tager with godlike blockstrings with include the fastest overhead in the game, and if Tager gets hit one time he eats a 50% combo into oki.

Mori, the guy who is in charge of Blazblue, has no idea how to make a fighting game. Once you understand this, it becomes very easy to understand why people do not like BB.

Mori has said:

1) Grapplers are overpowered because they do too much damage with one move.

2) Offense being more powerful than defense is unfair because it gives advantage to the aggressor.

3) It is better for fighting games to be shallow than deep so that bad players don't feel as hurt when they lose badly to good players

4) He also forced in Mu against everyone's wishes. Everyone said "but turning Noel into Mu is fucking retarded and Mu is the worst character design ever" but Mori was like "NOOOOO SHUT UP IT'S MY GAMEEEEE" and started a huge conflict within his entire staff over it. I'm pretty sure even Ishiwatari told him Mu was a retarded idea but Mori refused to listen, because he's a faggot.

Blazblue is not hype once you understand the game. There is nothing hype about fighting Hazama and realizing that no matter what character you play in whatever matchup you basically have 1 gameplan only. That is the real issue with Blazblue. The vast majority of characters have 1 gameplan. You aren't going to be playing rushdown Hakumen because Hakumen simply has no way to rush down without meter. He cannot mount early game attacks. His playstyle is based entirely on defending and relying on burst damage once you've sufficiently charged your star stick.

If you're going to say something like "b-b-but it's like that in this other fighting game too" don't even bother. That doesn't excuse BB doing it and it's shit there too.

I used to play it on /v/ pretty heavily but I stopped playing AH3 because everyone was obsessing over MAHVEL TRES so I couldn't get games together to save my life. I am buttfrustrated. At the damn terrible writing. I hate to use the term, but Noel is the biggest Mary Sue in history. She's not once been relevant to the story, yet everyone, both in story, and IRL, loves her and treats her like she's super special while everyone else in the series gets the shitty end of the stick, all because she is Mori's waifu.

CT's writing wasn't so bad because she wasn't actually important. Hell, her own damn story mode was more about Hazama than her. It wasn't until CS that the story went downstream on shit creek. Asspull plot twists like 'lol the imperator is Saya' and the focus on Noel being COMPLETELY USELESS yet still being getting to be treated like a heroine and getting a super happy fun time ending.

Noel is like a summary of poor writing and what is wrong with BB's story.

Well, she is super special.
She's the true inheritor of the Azure, and the only one who can destroy the Sankishin unit named Amateratsu, the one that time loops everything.
Although I do wish she got some more Bad endings.

Since I'm the one who started that whole "BB lacks depth" thing on /v/ I guess I'll elaborate on it a little.

Let's take a game like Super Turbo, which people often cite as one of the deepest fighters of all time(true even though it's a bit overrated). Let's look at Ryu. Most people think Ryu is just HADOUKEN SHORYUKEN but even though Ryu's toolset is limited, the depth in this toolset is infinite. The invincibility frames of shoryuken allow Ryu to challenge anything and it can be used offensively and defensively. Tatsus allow him to counter fireballs as well as move across the field. His fireball allows him to control space and build meter regardless of where he is on the screen. Then there's his super.Ryu can be played all kinds of ways from anywhere onscreen. If you want to focus on rushing down with Ryu you can, if you want to focus on keeping away you can, if you want to play footsies you can. This character is deep.

Now let's go to GG. GG is deeper than ST, because the characters have so much freedom that it's hard to even get solid matchup data on the game because everyone can play every character very differently and it's almost all viable. Let's take Sol. Seems like a basic rushdown character. But again, you need to look at the application of his tools and how they work in the context of the game. Sol can Bandit Revolver. IAD. Gunflame FRC, which he can do a lot because he gets meter for moving forward. He can just run in. If you wanted to you could even Volcanic Viper and then RC. There is actually even more, more esoteric shit. The sky is the limit.
