The thing about Shoma is, his love for Ringo started out pure enough. He was crushed whenever she died and undeniably ecstatic when she was brought back to life by the hat. He wanted to save her and keep her alive once he found out such a thing was possible. Before the hat, he was resigned to fate. After she was brought back, he began to frantically and actively search for the penguindrum, even more so than what her supposed "soulmate" was willing to do. Although some of his means were definitely out-of-line (raiding Ringo's room), he was still relatively pure and untainted.

Then, Mario came along to wreck shit just as the hat was showing it's weakness - it couldn't last forever unless he found the penguindrum, and he still wasn't sure what the penguindrum even was. Mario offered a miracle in a bottle; something which could cure Ringo indefinitely and without having to resort to raiding rooms and searching for something which seemed impossible to find.

Mario began to manipulate Shoma and Ringo while administering the medicine to her. He got on her good side. Finally, she was able to go home, and hey! Things were great again and he managed to save the woman he loved. That was good enough for him.

Then....she died. And Mario broke the news - the indefinite miracle was incompetent, and Shoma would have to do far more damage and destruction to save his sister.

Shoma, willing to do ANYTHING to save the woman he loved, became blinded and was effectively manipulated by Mario.

I don't know why I typed all that...I just see the entire thing as incredibly sad.
