I marathon it, but didn't care much of the scene. Yuri and Tabuki are the worst characters of the story, they're on the fringe of the central conflict and feel more like consequences rather than causations about it.

Penguindrum works as a marathon show, because the setting and characters expand beyond the basic premise. The crazy Ikuhara thematic/symbolic/metaphorical shit is either a game you play as you try to anticipate the twists, or something you appreciate as foreshadowing in the early episodes.

That said, I wonder how PD will fare under rewatching after it's all done. The last show I tried that with (Steins;Gate) failed hard, I'm hopeful PD will still hold up. I'm sure there are /a/ssholes who've watched it several times over already and are still in love.

The main cast consists of Shouma, Ringo, Kanba, and Himari, with the extended cast Masako, Satenoshi, Yuri, and Tabuki. It's not a stretch to call them the worst when the cast is that small.

Not to mention they are the least involved in the main plot, being two people who a very dead Momoka saved and doing nothing but trolling the main cast by dicking around with the diary.

Tabuki and Yuri were fine up until Tabuki went apeshit and tried to kill Himari. That completely fucked up his character, demanding more screen time to resolve. Time better spent on other characters.

I hear that very often, but I don't really see that. To me, he's the most interesting character in the show. I don't think he needs to be distrubing. He's a very ambiguous character, full of contradictions; even before the last episodes revelation, I've always wondered about what is it that really drives him.

He does seem to have a martyr complex; he puts himself in dangerous situtations without even thinking about it and whenever saving Himari is brought up, HE wants to be the one to save her. I believe that might be one of the reasons why he refused Masako's financial help. Taking money from her would rob him of the opportunity to take credit. I don't doubt that he loves Himari but it's clear to me that his ego has a huge impact on the way he does things.

Even though his objectives are generally good, he has a very petty side. It's reinforced in the scenes where her breaks down (last ep) and his "parents" praise him for doing a good job at keeping the family together. It is a bit sad actually, that under his mask of confidence and cool attitude he needs to be constantly reassured. Now that I think of it, this side of his character was always there; he always seemed to fight with Shoma for Himari's attention. We'll see how his character develops this week. I do like where it's going but I hope that Ikuhara doesn't disappoint me.

Well, I doubt he's doing that just for the hell of it. There must be a goal for it even though his methods are immoral. The first half of the serious established him as the dude who desperately tries keep their family together no matter what. Even him "breaking up" his relationship with Shouma felt a little strang; considering that his "parents" told him his doing a great job at protecting the family. It seemed more as if he tries to protect Shouma (though I'm aware that this argument is a bit weak, considering that he let Himari into Kiga's headquarters).
Anyways, it doesn't seem like he would be a person to do all those horrible things without having some sort of a higher purpose. Yes, Kanba's methods are the most drastic, but it seems like he had been the one that had the most exposure to Kiga's ideology. The first episode didn't pique my interest much. The next few didn't either. It had some neat animation, but it felt pointless and dull. There was a lack of plot and substance, I felt.

I just marathoned it myself and can't really say what it's moving towards or what it's about, but I enjoy it anyway. If you didn't like the first couple of episodes I see no real reason to continue it. Though if stalker Ringo annoyed you she doesn't do that for the whole show. She ends up being one of the more sane characters.

Kanba and Masako are pretty much in line with their penguins, Esmeralda is very intuitive and is shown acting before Masako does, 1# is perhaps a bit selfish. Shouma is ALWAYS on the brink of acting like a faggot and keeps holding himsef back, his penguin's actions basically say that Shouma really wants to be selfish, it's just that he isn't. Himari is perfectly in line with her penguin, the only moment where they don't do the very same thing is when she flirts with Kanba and where she met Sanetoshi, that's where she hesitates to do what she wants.
