When it's well written into the story, fanservice is never a bad thing. That being said, the new show itself is actually quite light on the fanservice. We had the sleepwalking scene in the beginning, Millia's changing clothes scene and the morning the Sylvius was spotted and Fam was woken up on her spare sleepwalking mattress. Oh and a part where it was implied that some dude accidentally looked up Gisey skirt, but you don't see anything.

As far as the cute girls thing goes. I have yet to see them goofing off eating cake and drinking tea. I have yet to see them get all sparkly and repeat eachothers name over and over while blushing. And I have yet to see a gratuitous boob grope.

So on the whole this series I would say is very tasteful.

It really wasn't. I think you must be nostlagia'ing or something.

I watched the first series some years ago and loved it so much, I watched it again immediately after I finished it. Then, about two years later, I watched it again. I had by then read every scrap of information about the LE universe I could find on the internet, such as the timeline and the mechanical sheets and whatnot. This gave the viewing experience a whole new level of depth, but it is also when I started really noticing the bad pacing, quirky plot advances and off-model animation. Then, about a month before this new season aired, I watched it for the 4th time. Now I was really seeing all the flaws.

Don't get me wrong, it's still one of my favorite series, but even I admit it's flawed as hell.

What? The animation quality was inconsistent as fuck in the first series. Not only did the characters go off-model and derpy half the time, their poses and body language were also derpy and often out of character or unfitting the scene. And don't get me started about the CG/Hand Drawn integration issues. Granted, it wasn't as bad as Blue Submarine No.6, but it was pretty dissonant at times.

I think it's a combination of several factors. First off, she failed Fam a couple of times now and she's not used to failure. This has thrown her off-balance. Secondly, she is usually a quiet, obedient family girl, and she is probably homesick and worried about her siblings. Third, Fam is acting stupid. She is overly optimistic and taking huge, unnecessary risks, accepting impossible challenges left and right and exhibiting a level of confidence bordering on the delusional. Finally, Fam and Millia have been becoming closer and closer, right in front of Gisey's eyes, and in danger of replacing Gisey at Fam's top spot.

If there's one thing about Last Exile I really, really love, it's that they show instead of tell. With many other anime (and just media in general), they're always telling you how the characters feel. In LE, they hardly ever state it outright, and imply a ton just from expressions and what the character actually does regarding a situation.

There were parts of the series where there were multiple subplots running alongside one another. It would go back and forth between the various scenes, and what would happen is that the subplot with the most action ended up being told too fast, and the one which less action would drag out and have long, slow shots. Now for scenes like this to be directed this way individually it would work, but when interweaving different types of scenes a better balance needs to be found; direction needs to be more coordinated.

Best examples I can think of are The Race/Sabotage/Alex at the Auction, The events surrounding Delphine and Dio and The Attack on the Anatoray capital

BD sales are below average, which one might interpret as it being no good. However, BD sales are actually an indication of otaku fandom, and since otaku like shit, that means this anime is not shit.

So far I still like the first LE better, even if it had pacing problems and if I wasn't satisfied with the ending, specially the lack of proper closure to Dio.

My main complains with GnF is how it sets the mood. It just feels too lighthearted even in the heat of battle. It's been getting better though. Also, I don't feel endeared to any of the new characters as much as I did to Lavie, Dio, Mullin, the mechanics and so on.

But at the end of the day both are enjoyable series with their own pros and cons.

They've thrown in 3 fanservice scenes over the span of the last 8 episodes, totalling an amount of a minute of fanservice, max. I think they might have been toying with the idea of creating waifus for the otaku, but decided to take it in a different direction. And let's face it, if they wanted to do fanservice, they would have and they would have succeeded gloriously. This is the studio that made Strike Witches after all.

The scene where Millia dresses in a maid outfit, though it seemed at first like fanservice, actually turned into a jab at the whole fanservice thing. The message was obvious: "You can't just put on a cute outfit and bat your eyelashes and expect your wishes to be granted; you have to actually make a serious effort"

And that's the course this anime has been taking ever since.

In my opinion there's plenty on the part of side characters in Fam too. Cecily, the listening post officer, is cute as ever, which seems to be a prerequisite for listening post officers, and in the latest episode we actually got to look into her head. Then there's Olaf the mechanic and Atamora the pirate captain, who manage to establish a character properly even though they get extremely limited screentime. The various Ades generals, such as Sadri, Sorush, Kayvan and Orang, especially when seen interacting with eachother outside of the battlefield, actually display some human characteristics that do a good job at hinting at a believable back story. And then of course there are characters like Vasant and the Russian chick who are both major players just waiting to happen.

And Vincent and Alvis haven't even shown up yet.

The new season being more lighthearted doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as the mood whiplash it suffers from. Like in episode 2 you have the looming destruction of the capital city, the butchery of an entire ship and the kidnapping of the queen, etc. Suddenly Fam pulls off the power of plot armor to get to the center of the capital flag ship in a practically disney way of fulfilling a childish request. Then suddenly it's a serious series again and the bad guy wins.

The first season could have done the same thing with Klaus, but the middle, happy go lucky part, would have been more serious and consistent with the rest.

No, they were not. I am talking presentation here. Of course a whole city getting destroyed is worse than some soldiers being shot to shit in combat, but LE1 made such a scene seem way more brutal. I cant take it seriously. It has gotten better with the last 2 episodes, but mood swings from the silly antics of to destruction of cities is bad.

I agree with the mood whiplash part, but I think that's caused solely by the nature of Fam's personality. This personality is now developing into a problem, as it's alienating her best friend and getting her deeper and deeper into some serious shit. I think if you go back and rewatch those first episodes you might now look at that behaviour in a different light, as we now know that that overly-enthusiastic behaviour is actually harmful and self-destructive.

It's still tastefully done, but seriously:

    >female villains, mixed main cast

was perfect in Last Exile, I can't help but feel an integral male main character has been present in every scene and overwritten with the moe-kawaii-loli hijinks. It's an enjoyable show but the balance is missing.

I've actually noticed that. I'm obviously going to continue to watch the series, but my point was, regardless of whether it is acknowledged in universe, I still found it grating and borderline unwatchable for those scenes. When LE: Fam gets dark/serious it is really good, but I don't see myself rewatching it the way I do with the first one, just because of the ridiculous nature of it. I really hope Fam develops as a character into something more than a suicidal scatterbrained genki girl without any self-awareness.

I find the lack of real adults on the heroes side to be more of an issue. Aside from Claus/Lavie (who were treated like children) Tatiana (who at least acted maturely), and the guild members (who were bonkers in a dark way), the cast was mostly people in their 30's / 40's struggling with war and oppression. Now we have a world where adults are useless and Fam can fly into the center of the main flagship of the enemy to say hello, then live to tell about it.

I don't quite understand why people complain about it not being as dark. Of course it's not as dark. Last season took place on a crumbling space station ruled by LOLEVUL petty tyrant who actively enforced maximum suffering on the people. The entire point of last season was that they fixed that. Why wouldn't it be lighter this time around?

It's not like this season doesn't have excellent airship battles and an engaging world full of intrigue and adventure. If you just wanted a carbon copy of the last season, go watch it.

Lighthearted is fine if done right. And Fam does well at being lighthearted. However it still tries to be dark. And it is inconsistent in tone because of it.

The problem becomes, why didn't they make it an adventure with Fam and Gisey instead of creating a war atmosphere like the first one. Why did they bother calling it a sequel instead of doing their own thing (which has a lot of implications and expectations). Etc...

Can we really call this a second season if it can be easily viewed without watching the first series first or just ignoring it? If so I feel they shouldn't be compared with each other because it seems as though Gonzo is just trying to cater to the audience of today, let's not forget the first series aired at 2003. There is also a side story that occured between the years from the first series when Claus and Lavie boarded the Exile to Earth, 6 months after boarding the Exile is when the manga Last Exile: Travelers of The Hourglass begins. But who knows, we've only seen 8 episodes of Fam, TSW so far out of 21 so its still to early too judge, especially since the plot in Fam, TSW has been picking up a lot since episode 07. I don't think the two series should be compared. In the first series we needed to know the concepts and structure of the universe of Last Exile as and introduction to the series, we needed to know that it takes a lot of dedication to become a navi as shown in the childhoods of Claus and Lavie, if there is one thing that connects the two series enough to call it a second season, it's that they're in the same universe, in the same planet, Earth, set two years later but with no explanation of the universe of Last Exile and how the MCs have come to get where they are today, it could be interpretted that they did work their ass of to get where they are today as experienced Pilots since we still are in the same universe as the first series, do Gonzo really need to repeat themselves if you've already seen the first series?

why do people keep bringing up the the exile crashing into the capital as some sort of shit just got serious moment? the king said it himself that it had been evacuated so the only one who really died where the few poor grunts still assigned to the anti aircraft guns and the king and his butler. So while a very big crash the average generic battleship going down scene had a bigger body count.

but besides that I'm still liking this new series. Sure If Fam's Vanship suddenly exploded into a fireball and took her with her in the next ep, I probably wouldn't really care but than the same could have been said for me on how I felt about Claus in the first one.

Are you stupid? Feminists strive for equal numbers of men and women, and they don't like it when you have moeshit because it's still very much subtle sexualization of females.

If anything, they should be thanking neckbeard otakus that like girls a lot because they have no social life to meet actual women in.

Ok, first off, let me say that I'm loving this new season. It's different, yes, but that doesn't make it less entertaining for me. I have absolutely no problem with the main characters being young girls. Obviously the gender/age stereotypes don't hold true in this universe. It's anime, it makes its own rules.

What I do miss however is Norkia. Not so much the actual place, but more how it looked and what it stood for. Honest, ordinary people trying to get by in a world coping with war and scarcity. I liked how grey and brown it was. I liked how it had a friendly market with meat and bread and people greeting eachother. I liked how it had a real community.

In fact, I'll go so far as to say that even in season 1 there was not enough Norkia.

    So yeah.

Can someone explain to me how shippers came to the conclusion that Fam and Millia is supposed to be lesbos? First of all friends help each other out, and Fam wanted to help Millia so they can bring back the Grand Race, thats all no lesbo shit. Also that Glacies being all female is totally wrong, the men are WAY too valuable so they are kept at home for breeding, heck 1 guy can marry up to 4-5 women in that country.
